From Schefter's twitter:
Mike Holmgren informed Eric Mangini and his full staff they will return to work in 2010 - then said, Let's get to work.

Guess I owe you one as well. Didn’t realize you had posted also. I had already deleted mine.

Wow, surprised and quite happy with this decision.

I would have liked to have seen a shake-up on the offensive side of the ball.
Now, who is our GM?

Evidently we’re going with the whole forcing the GM to work with the HC again. I would’ve liked to see the GM first and then hear the decision… But I’m glad Mangini and his staff is back. Not TOO crazy about Daboll, but hey, hopefully Holmgren can make him better.

agreed … I’m hoping its a first year OC jitters. However if Harrison runs the ball like he did at the end of this year … who cares who the OC is.

My guess is Heckert is going to be the GM and this has already been discussed with him. Seattle radio was reporting that Heckert canceled his interview with the Seahawks.

Here’s the thing; this isn’t like this past year’s HC before GM debacle.
Holmgren is “the guy”. Mangini knows it, and he also knows he will have to cooperate with a GM and Holmgren to have success and/or stay with the Browns.
Really the GM and coach just need to be able to work together—they always do in every situation. We can hire a GM to fit the coach. The problem last year was that the coach was also “the guy”. We fixed that.

I’m really surprised that Daboll is back. Not just because of the offensive woes this season but I also thought Holmgren would want one of his offensive guys in here. Maybe he wants to give them one more season to see what they can do together.

Good point. Did he really intend to bring everyone back?
by Western Reserve on Jan 7, 2010 3:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s the word.
I’m curious, though: did Holmgren just make the decision to keep Daboll for Mangini? Probably was based on mutual discussion, but perhaps not.

It would be great if Holmgren could make Daboll make some changes, give him some mentorship, etc. I was hoping Daboll would be gone, too.

my understanding of the situation is that mangini could still fire daboll if he wanted.

I’m glad to see the players supporting the coach. Priority number one is getting everyone on the same page.

i have a feeling that Mangini is a lame duck coach in 2010 unless he pulls 10 wins out of his ass. Rumors around John Fox will continue with his contract expiring at the end of next year, and Gruden could be back in the fold after another year in the MNF booth.
Leads me to believe why Daboll is still here: no use replacing him now if you plan on going another route in 2011 anyhow.

Yeah, I think Mangini has to show much more improvement next season or he’s gone. As you said, Fox and Gruden might be available. I think Holmgren didn’t feel it would be fair to fire Mangini after one year so he can give him one more year to see what he can do and if there isn’t more success than this year he can fire him while still feeling he gave him a fair chance.
And you’re probably right about Daboll — see if he can improve under Holmgren’s help or fire him with Mangini and find some of Holmgren’s people.

There won’t be any football in 2011, so we’re likely talking about 2012 at the earliest.

Which would mean Gruden would be at or near the end of his contract with espn.

I really believe this was the right move. I was terrified of Holmgren trying to wear all the hats, and it sounds like he will never do that. I want continuity (at least eventually) and believe that Mangini hasn’t proven himself to be a futile HC.
I believe Holmgren can get the coaches, GMs, and everyone else on the same page, and can delegate responsibilities so we have a lot of people all working toward the same goal.
And, if it doesn’t work out, I feel that the coaches that will be available next year will be much better than what we could have chosen from this year.
I am excited.

This is a good thing. Three cheers for continuity!
Really surprised that Daboll was retained, and really relieved to not be facing a future with Jim Zorn as head coach.

At least Daboll was smart enough to not let Anderson throw the ball the majority of the last two weeks.
by BrownDawg1409 on Jan 7, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Which really isn’t impressive if I think about it….
by BrownDawg1409 on Jan 7, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I highly doubt Zorn would have been brought here as head coach. Maybe as offensive coordinator, but I think there were many more qualified candidates for the head coaching job with Holmgren connections.
