How do you guys do it? day in day out, support the Browns?

Disclaimer-I'm a steelers fan.

Where do you guys find it in yourselves to support the Browns? I mean, I can understand on weekends people may tune in to watch the Browns play-maybe theres nothing on TV, maybe its a easy way to pass time, whatever.  But how do you guys find the energy to come onto this site, write and post stuff about the Browns.  I mean, do the lead writers get paid (I'm not familiar with SB nation).  I'm a die hard steelers fan, since I started watching football (i was 9 when we went to the first superbowl in 1995 -first for ME) and lost to the Cowboys.  I cried.  yes, I cried.  I was nine.  But since then I've stayed true, watched everygame and been heartbroken everytime till Ben came along.

But at least, in addition to nostalgia we had a chance to win the superbowl-sthe steelers had gone to the AFC championship so many more times (and the pats cheated them out of it so many more times)...yet you guys are perennial losers.  Who are you fans? are you from the older generation of bygone browns success? or newer folks/? I can't comprehend it.

Actually, I’ll answer. We do it because we’re not front-runners. We don’t put our flags and jerseys and license plates away just because we aren’t winning. All things that can’t really be said about some other fan bases.

I never said all steeler fans, you did. i have good friends and family that are steeler fans and not front-runners; and you make yourself seem like you’re trying to be too intelligent and superior to others with comments like this.

so how is my statement any different with the subtraction of all, or how is yours any different with the addition of all? you’re playing semantics, and then you put the delicious cherry on top by accusing me of attempting to make myself seem more intelligent.

No, it’s not. It deviates from the main point and you just wanted something to gripe about because he mentioned front – running Steeler fans.

Peyton Hillis is my Hero.

by SpecialBrownie on Oct 14, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It does not deviate at all. His main points was that there are a lot of front-runner Steelers fans. And I asked what his proof was. That could not be any more central to the main point.

"I'm from Maryland, and no one can beat me!"

it’s anecdotal, obviously. he can’t prove it, no studies have been done. if you couldn’t figure this out yourself I don’t know how you’re using a keyboard.

The point is he doesn’t need to prove it. it should be a given that any team that’s been successful for a number of years has a lot of bandwagon fans.

Ah, he was talking about when they finally came into dominance? Their “creation” was when they started winning.

Uh, wut? I’m pretty sure that’d be the Steelers fault.

Also, if people just focus on the Superbowl era, or the Superbowl wins, what kind of fan is that? The NFL focuses on it because it’s where they generate their money. There’s no point in acknowledging the old championships, it doesn’t correlate to what they’re doing now.

most fans who are decently educated on the sport and on the history of the NFL DO pay attention to the pre super bowl era. there were some all time greats from that era that maybe the casual fan doesn’t know, but the person who is educated/passionate about football in general (not just their own team) will know a lot.

It’s annoying when people start rooting for a team because they’re winning, then claim to have been fans of that team for forever. Then if that team starts to lose, they jump ship and move onto the next one.

It’s also irritating to see front-running Steelers fans in Cleveland. Reverse the two teams’ success (or lack of) recently, and they’re rooting for the Browns.

uhh…attendance to steelers games did fluctuate a lot in the 90s when the team wasn’t all that great (but solid). the fluctuation was below league average (meaning they fluctuated less than the average team) but still a lot more than the browns.

Its just the nature of winning. you will get some fair weather fans. However, the fan attendance is somehow able to be good at not fluctuating in dallas.

You know what team sees the least attendance fluctuation? the browns, and its not like we are challenging for a SB every year.

we are talking about ‘teams that win’ and people thinking that there are frontrunning steelers fans. you defend this by saying that people are paranoid about teams that win. the statistics show a 10% (about) attendance fluctuation in steelers fans which is better than the league average (during the calculated time period) of 12.7% but not as good as the browns .8% or the cowboys 1.8%.

I think the Browns fan base is incredible

There is this 72 year old guy who comes in to the bar where I watch games…he takes notes on cocktail napkins during the browns games. Says he edits them and sends them to the Browns FO. He’s a great guy to talk to, and man he loves his Browns.

Being a fan is all about loyalty, so if anyone switches sides because their team is losing, then they were never a fan to begin with.

Is that what you guys want to hear? Your fans are good? So what?
People are referring to a lot of history here, so if you want some history, read about the attendance of Steelers games from 1940-1960’ish.

And where did you get your info if I may ask? Show me where it says the Steelers season ticket sales and/or attendance fluctuated in the 90’s.

The Steelers have tradition and thats what draws new fans that are passionate about football and honor.

I have never personally met any Steeler fan that just “hopped on” recently, and I graduated high school in the 80’s. Met a lot of fans through the 80’s and they’re still same fans that are around now. And they are just as disgusted as everyone here by fairweather fans, no matter WHAT team they’re on.

If I met a wagon jumper, I would not even speak to that person. They havn’t earned the right to call themselves a fan of anything, let alone the football team they just started watching.

We all have our bad times, but the more punches to the gut you take as a fan, the SWEETER it is when you climb your way to the top.

So let me ask surag a question.

Since your profile is extremely sparse, what other teams do you root for? The Yankees? University of Miami? The Bulls? (they all were top teams in 1995}

Or are you from Pittsburgh? And if so, do you root for the Pirates?

by talonk on Oct 11, 2010 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

It’s in my blood, it is ultimately impossible for me to root for anyone else or not be interested in everything Browns.

This is me in a nutshell. I started watching sports in ‘85 and saw the best of times for the Browns. Didn’t take long before I hated division rivals and “Bucky” and the Broncos. When the Browns left town, there was no way I could root for anyone else. The expansion team has been bad. But true fans don’t abandon in the hard times.
And as far as fans of the game of football are concerned… they know the important place the Browns have had in the history and evolution of the sport. Bill Walsh developed the West Coast Offense, but he learned the principles behind it from his time under Paul Brown. The pass happy offenses we see in the NFL all have their roots in the Browns’ dynasty from the ‘40s and ’50s. Before the Browns came along, most teams relied heavily on the run.
This is our pride. This franchise was a winning franchise till they left town. It’s only a matter of time before they’re a dominant team again.

In other news, espn ranked steelers as the #1 fanbase…however, their methodology is kinda stupid whereas the one that ranks them 21st is much more scientific.

not only did biz journals give us the highest ranking in support, but also in difficulty.

it is probably a bit dated with some of the info. maybe if they did it again or someone else did, it would be very interesting.

I like the method they chose which seems very scientific, unlike the ESPN one which considers stuff like how much the fanbase is hated (the packers are not a ‘hated’ fanbase outside of chicago but are one of the best in the country), how creative the fans are, and how much they tailgate. none of this makes a fanbase ‘good’ in my opinion

by Cannon36 on Oct 11, 2010 7:41 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I disagree. There is a huge chunk of Steelers fans that have no way to comprehend cheering for a franchise that has a down decade. If it ever happened to the Steelers, they’d become Patriots fans. Or hockey fans. Or whatever is the new vogue team or sport to root for. They don’t know loyalty because they’ve never had theirs tested.

This may not define all Steelers fans, but it defines many of them, including this guy.

the steelers made the playoffs every year their first 6 years under cowher (‘92-’97). Maybe you define ‘good’ as going deep into the playoffs, but the other 20 teams that miss the playoffs will define a ‘good’ season as making the playoffs.

yeah, the browns have won the most championships, but how many have they won in the last 10 years? 20? 30? 40? In their last 17 seasons (last 2 decades), they have made the playoffs TWICE. thats the same number of super bowls the steelers have won.

the steelers are the best playoff team in NFL history with a .608 winning % and 6 super bowl wins. The only other team with at least 50 playoff games played (the steelers have 51) are the cowboys.

the browns are historically not a good playoff team and have at times, struggled to get to the playoffs. the only team who have played at least 350-400 regular season games in the NFL (around how many the browns have) and have less playoff games played are the lions.

a) the steelers didn’t suck. maybe they sucked for a bandwagon fan but they didn’t ‘suck’

From 1997-2003, the steelers winning % was .553 (avg record: 8.5-7.5) with a +246 point differential (or +35 a year or plus 2.2 a game). the steelers are tied for 10th during that period in playoff appearances and are 7th in winning %

If you include the season beginning in 1996 (which isn’t clear), the winning % is .570 (9.1-6.9) with a 333 point differential (42 a year, and +2.63 a game). they jump up to being tied for 5th during that time in playoff appearances and were 5th in winning %.

the only teams that were better than the steelers during this period were the Titans, Ravens, vikings, Bucs, and Broncos; all of which went to at least 1 super bowl.

Yes, you ‘stunk’ but only if you have been living in a world where your team makes the playoffs every year. the steelers even had a better winning % than the Pats who made it to 3 super bowls (and won 2) from 1996-2003. With this attitude that you ‘suck’, no wonder many here think you are a bandwagon fan.

Oh, and for those 5 years we watched baseball. we are a sports town and without the browns we clung to baseball. the indians made it to 2 world series when the browns were gone and they set the MLB record for consecutive sellouts.

exactly my point. and during the stretch you have been speaking of, the steelers fanbase did waver a bit. they were 12th in the league from 1996-2005 in attendance fluctuation (measurement of how the fanbase fluctuates when the team is bad).

This whole thread is questioning why we stick with our team. you know why? because we are extremely loyal to the team. we fill our stadium every week almost to the brink and we lose almost every week. that is loyalty in a nutshell.

That has been my experience over here in the past, and fully expected it this go round. Color me pleasantly surprised, actually.

tubway already apologized, so what more can we ask for.

Rape and murder aren’t funny subjects either though, and they can be sensitive topics, with a greater possibility of offending.

What does offend me is that we are still arguing about this. My advice is for both sides to agree to disagree and drop it, so we can get back to talking about football.

Hockey was on a lot on ESPN in the early 80’s. It was the only sport they had at that time. My brother and I would sit in our room in front of a thirteen inch black-and-white tv and watch whatever game was on. Not sure how I got to the point of rooting for the Nordiques, but it turned out to be an apt choice since, like the Browns, they moved to another city and promptly won a championship.

by golanbatrac on Oct 12, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

if you’re the type to play video games, you can actually recreate the Nordiques in NHL 11 since their logo is included in the “create a team” mode, along with some other bygone franchises. You can even replace another team with them in any mode you choose. So if you wanted to, you could replace the Avalanche with the Nordiques and play as them in franchise mode, like the move never happened.

I never grew up in the 80s. I grew up at a time when hockey was kind of like the sport that sits in the corner and doesn’t speak unless spoken to…maybe this is a bad analogy, but you rarely see hockey anymore and it took me living in a hockey town (buffalo is pretty much canada…they are somewhat a football town too) to like and appreciate hockey.

Maybe indirectly it is due to pirates sucking-because they were bad no one played baseball games? or I didnt come across as manY? I dont know. But it certainly wasnt because the Pirates sucked.

the browns? we are a good QB and good WR away from being a legitimate playoff contender IMO. To really make a deep run at the playoffs, we would also need a FS too (and maybe D-Line Depth/youth).

This team is a lot closer to the playoffs then people realize and give them credit for. this is a team that has competed in every game and lost close every time…We just need a piece or two to put us over the top.

I believe in a good banter, some trash talking, poking fun, all of that…But this post does not represent us over at BTSC, Steeler fans in general, or even good sportsmanship.

Whereas I do dislike your team, I appreciate and LOVE the rivalry, which wouldn’t be so great if not for the healthy dislike.

His was a trollpost, whereas Steel Spike, Klompus and Johnny_s were all pretty level-headed and chill. Thanks for being able to carry on a good discussion with them (I arrived a little late) and having fun with it.

I do hope your team improves…I’ve said that so many times since Modell left you high and dry…but I still hope, no matter how good your team gets, we destroy you 51-0. Every. Single. Time.

Really,

Because you said lots of bad words to me over on your site even though I wasn’t responding to a comment of yours. Some 20 year old was saying browns fans aren’t loyal. I said he has no idea what loyalty was since his team has been good since he’s been alive.

You thought I was challenging your loyalty, went on a rant about some charity you run that was completely unrelated, and then used a whole bunch of bad words. I’d copy it here but it goes against Chris’s rules for this site.

Congratulations on recognizing irony.

He used the singular in referring to the Steelers fan. I elected to do the same.

by worldtrip on Oct 14, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, so you elected to stoop down to my level, if I even did “stoop down.”

Bravo.

and you whiffed on the irony dawg nuts stumbled over. somebody should really pick it up before more people hurt themselves on it

your “shtick” consists of analyzing other people’s “shticks” and posting tired steeler pictures. congratulations on being the 4chan of dbn.

+1, the Browns have enough injuries to worry about already than to have their fans start tearing and breaking things

for the record: I have seen enough of DN’s posts to be able to judge the seriousness or not of them. when you are on a site long enough, you can do that. I believe he saw the irony but wanted to poke fun at the idea of calling a browns fan a “Brown Fan”

second part of his post is pretty irrelevant from the first

by klompus on Oct 15, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

actually they are both relevant from what I gather

When he was talking about a gross generalization, to me it seemed like he was saying that us being “Brown Fans” was a gross generalization. Honestly, I don’t see anything else there that wouldn’t be that anyways.

Second verse is different than the first.

Let me try to help you out a bit here by being very explicit.

I have two statements and he responded to both of them separately, one having to do with generalizations, and the other referring to fans in the singular. So I responded to his response with two sentences of my own, one having to do with generalizations, although it was now about irony. The second statement, again, about referring to fans in the singular.

Hence the second part having nothing to do with the first.

Got it now?

if this was all started by my comment, and I don’t really give a shit about it anymore, why do you guys?

by Dawg Nuts on Oct 15, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

he has to defend his criticism of you because he is right and you suck because you are a browns fan.

Yes, clearly that has been attitude the whole time

It is possible to respond seriously in a post and then finish the post with something lighter. In other words the second part was obviously a joke.

Except that I don’t actually believe it. I was using irony to make a point.

by worldtrip on Oct 14, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

And btw if you were to talk to just about anybody over on our site you would discover that I am just as quick to jump on people there when they generalize about fans of other teams, specifically Browns fans.

if we’re trolling here, then bean should probably ban us because i’ve seen no different responses than what either of us might say on btsc
