First half thoughts, McCoy is OK, Cribbs and MoMass hits were bogus, I say Mangini needs to get on the ref’s asses. I hate the steelers with a passion, good to see Big Ben hasn’t raped anyone today, good progress for him. Announcers have a stiffy for him though, I had to mute it halfway through the first quarter. I find it’s most enjoyable without sound. I’m playing some Rush – 2112, almost as nice as Pink Floyd and the Wizard of Oz at the same time. I want to see someone take some shots at some Pitt WR’s heads. Lets go browns!

I’d like to requote my prediction here:

I think we get much the same here…Browns hang very tough, but lose it with second half offensive ineptitude and eventually in the 3rd or 4th defense gives up a few big plays.

I think McCoy plays well and looks decent for the most part but probably ends up making one big mistake like a pick/fumble or something somewhere down the line due to pressure and inexperience.

(granted, the offensive ineptitude was 4 quarters though)

by johnnyphoenix on Oct 17, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yes. granted, he had a high ypa in the preseason but completed a lot of short throws. I like seeing the 12.3 yards per completion which also helps to show that he is throwing the ball downfield. the league average is slightly under 11 and anything over 10 is stretching the field in some way.

Well, arguing about one of those 2nd rounders is a moot point as we have no idea what he he does after the cheap shot concussion he received.

At the end of a game where the officiating was pathetic is not an ideal time to pick on Mangini and the coaching staff. We were playing with a 3rd string QB and our primary offensive weapon was taken out on a blow to the helmet. Our #1 WR was also taken out on a blow to the helmet. And we had to watch a rapist get a standing ovation from his adoring fans.

sacks=/=pressure.

We got pressure on ben, however it didn’t always get there quick enough. They also got away with a couple obvious holds on blitzers who easily could have sacked ben and a couple intentional groundings by him. We were in his face a lot, he was just better than he normally is at getting it out quick instead of holding onto the ball.

Against the Chiefs, Bucs and Falcons the secondary played mostly well outside of one big play against both the Bucs and Falcons. Every team in the league gives up big plays though, I think if you are expecting a shut down performance every week your expectations are too high.

Quite possible, but I think Wright is gone after this season and most everyone would agree we still need an upgrade over Elam, could really use a free safety. There is a lot to add to this roster still: top WR, maybe QB, RT?, number 1 pass rusher, CB, S.

I guess I just think our pass defense would benefit more from being able to blitz less people than it would from adding a safety or corner.

What is irrational is the idea that this team is a player or two away from being a winning/playoff caliber team.

Trust me, I’ve drank plenty of the Browns Kool-aid, and understand there is more parity and opportunity to improve quickly in the NFL vs NBA, MLB, etc. We Browns fans jizz our pants over isolated good performances (Jerome Harrison at the end of the last year, Derek Anderson before that, Colt today?) but where is the real progress? We seem to be better vs last year but to this point of the season we are one of the worst teams statistically and in W/Ls. Hope is great but isn’t a substitute for success.

But tell me since they’ve returned (outside of the fluke 9-7 season) where you’ve seen a pattern of improvement? I hope Holmgren and Heckert succeed – they certainly seem better than Palmer, Butch Davis, Romeo, etc. – but they have a long way to go. Hearing we are a season or two away is so tired. Sorry you have a problem with that perspective.

If it makes you feel better, there are plenty of people here that share you unbridled enthusiasm and you can skip over any dissenting posts like mine.

When Mangini was hired, I said that he’ll do what no one else has bothered to do since expansion: build the bottom half of the roster. The bottom half is there (and then some). Now we need the top half, and that has to be done in the draft. There’s no way we can expedite the process. We just have to be patient. If Heckert hits more than he misses next year, we should be an 8-8 team. Another good draft in 2012 and we’re a legit playoff team for years to come (and not a flash in the pan like the ‘07 team, since we’ll have a solid roster from top to bottom).

Considering how young our secondary is, I’ll take it. Take Eric Wright out and replace him with someone decent, and they may not even score those first two TDs.

If McCoy keeps playing like this, we have our QBOTF. We’ve already got answers at RB, LT, LG, C, and TE. We have decent no 2 and no 3 WRs.

Honestly, if we keep playing like we’re playing and developing, than we’re just a couple pieces short of being a deadly football squad and legitimate AFC North challengers.

It’s everything I can do to keep from anointing him QB of the future right now.

Tim Tebow just scored a Florida style touchdown.

I like what I saw from McCoy, which is the main reason I watched the game. I think its clear that we have a few glaring needs on this team from a talent stand point. Mangini and Rob Ryan are doing a really nice job considering the players they have and I think Heckert has done a great job finding us a couple of players this year. The Browns have to play an absolutely perfect mistake-free game to beat basically anyone, let alone the Steelers, considering that they are the best run defense and can shut down our guy Peyton Hillis.

We definitely have big needs:

  1. and #2 WR
RT (RG? Lauvao might be the guy Hopefully)
Defensive line (man we need some defensive ends, and Rubin is solid if unspectacular)
LB (we need some pass rush and some speed in the middle to help in zone coverage.)
Someone who isn’t Eric Wright. (Pat peterson? Prince ’mura?)

I maintain that Massaquoi will be an above average #2

Anyone know what happen to Brandon Lloyd? I’m watching that game and am yet to spot him.

Jets have good secondary, and he actually isn’t that great.

The Jets pass defense has been severely overrated this season.

Revis has been knicked up, when he gets fully healthy it will be a top unit.

It’s a lot less about the Jets having a good pass defense and much more about Orton targeting Gaffney for 4 catches and 65 yards. I kind of answered my own question.

But I haven’t even seen Lloyd and haven’t heard anything about an injury…

Good game guys

You all have something special in Colt. I was extremely impressed with his composure and accuracy. The score really doesn’t tell how close this game was. I like your defense, and I think you all are a team on the rise and you may even be better than the Bengals.

Good luck on the rest of the season.
