By the Numbers 2.0: '09 Browns vs. '10 Browns
Well, a few weeks ago, Kimble did a comparison article of the '09 browns compared to the '10 browns. I figured we could make it a weekly thing. This one will be more stats oriented (especially Football Outsiders stats). the one thing I thought would be interesting would be to compare the browns of week 10 last year to browns in week 10 this year.
2009 Browns through week 9
Points Per Game: 9.75 (t-31st)
Yards: 221.1 (31st) Passing: 121.5 (30th) Rushing: 99.6 (22nd)
Turnover Margin: -11 (32nd)
Points Against: 26.1 (28th)
Yards Given up: 409.5 (32nd) Passing: 239 (24th) Rushing: 170.5 (31st)
Point Differential: -16.35 (31st)
We were REALLY bad for the first half of last season...possibly the worst team in football. I think this is nice to see, just to show how far we have come.
When comparing these numbers, you do have to keep in mind (the totals) that this is only through 9 weeks. However, its pretty easy to figure out the rate we are going for a whole season because we have played 8 games so you just double it.
2009 Browns Offense
Points Per Game: 15.3 (29th)
First Downs Per Game: 14.8 (30th)

*This is something interesting to point out. If you take away Jake Delhomme's stats this year, our Comp % goes up to 65.5 (5th), our Yards/Pass goes up to 7.3(t-10th), our TD/INT ratio would be positive, and our QB Rating would be 87.2(15th)

Observations
- Wow. This team is a lot better than last year. The numbers support a lot of what I have seen. We have taken care of the ball better, been more competitive overall, let up less big plays, and had more big plays and better efficiency on offense
- These stats remind me of something Mangini said: "First you learn how to be competitive, next you learn how to win, and lastly you learn how to win consistently". In 2009, the team was just learning how to be competitive near the end of the season. You could see it carry over and they were competitive in each game. Now we are learning how to win. We just need to learn how to win consistently.
- Random Thoughts while Surfing Football Outsiders: Their Estimated wins for us is almost as many as ours for all of last year. We are 3-5, but based on FO's rankings (and record) we have the hardest SoS so far and FO ranks our SoS going forward, only the 23rd hardest based on DVOA (27th based on Record).
- Random Thoughts Continued: Football Outsiders gives us a 9.5% chance of making the playoffs. There is Hope! They also predict us to finish with most likely, an 8.8 record, with our projected finish being with 7.7 wins.

So you’re telling me there’s a chance. . . . Yeah.

Good write up Bross! My god how we sucked last year. I would be shocked if we continue on this pace and don’t keep Mangini. If we can continue to get more young talent in the off-season I think we will be a playoff contender next year.

Thanks. and I agree with all of this.

your whole argument is a fallacy!
Any players going into this years draft that you are looking at? I think A.J. Green could really boost our offense.
Colin McCarthy out of Miami and Donta Hightower would be two OLB’s that I would have my eye on.

Many scouts are saying that he would be a good outside rushing LB in a 3-4 system and still be versatile enough to play ILB also. He was heralded about the same coming into college as Rolando McClain until he was injured. If the guy is 100%, he is a beast.

I don’t see it personally. he may be a solid pass rusher from the ILB position, but the guy only has 1 career sack in college. He can get to the QB a lot, but that is partially the product of him blitzing a lot. Joe Haden and Eric Berry both had more sacks in college than him. He also doesn’t have great range as an ILB and I don’t see how he can get consistent pressure off the edge with his speed,

AJ Green. If we can’t get him, Michael Floyd. Outside of them, there isn’t much. For us, we need to go #1 WR talent or bust on WR. the guys in later rounds that have #1 WR talent are sparse (Devier Posey, Ronald Johnson, Derrell Johnson, Deandre Brown, and Cecil Shorts are about it).
I would like to go pass rusher, but I am not sold on Von Miller’s ability against the run. Personally, I really like Jeremy Beal who IMO is one of the better OLBs against the run. Honestly, Beal fits the system great and is a “Mangini Guy”…I know its gotten cliche around here, but the guy is a very hard worker and has an excellent work ethic.

von miller would be an OLB right? Justin Houston from geogia (OLB) is playing nuts right now, i like him, but i think DE is a bigger need. Does Beal project as a DE or an OLB?
OLB. He is only 265 so he is a bit small to be a down lineman in our system.
I think with our system, OLB is a bigger need. the OLBs are the guys that need to get to the QB.
Not saying that D-Line isn’t a big need. However, I see it this way: we need one elite guy at OLB, someone with great athleticism; a first or 2nd rouner. at 3-4 DE, we need some depth guys. Coleman, Shafering, and Robaire are solid starters for now, but wee need youth; a guy we can get in the 3rd like a Jared Crick or a Jarvis Jenkins.
