Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace Not Practicing Today
The original return date to practice for veterans Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace was supposed to be today (Wednesday), but in speaking to the press, head coach Eric Mangini said that neither of them will participate in practice.
Mangini noted that rookie quarterback Colt McCoy will take all of the reps at quarterback today, but he did not officially name him the starter against the New England Patriots. Other players who will miss practice include Jason Trusnik (birth of son) and John St. Clair (ankle). Lastly, it's worth noting that both Mike Holmgren and Mangini have basically stated that the team won't try to claim WR Randy Moss today. With that said, I wonder if a chance will be taken on LB Shawne Merriman.

It would seem silly to sign Merriman and assume the contract of a top notch LB while getting bargain bin production. Far wiser to wait for the offseason and take a chance on him without the financial baggage. I would take a chance on him then, especially if he can sit out the rest of the season and get healthier, and find a doctor with a harder to detect roid.

Merriman is getting paid less than 2 million for the rest of the season.
Why not see what he has left in the tank?

I don’t think his ego is a good fit for this team and besides, this defense is starting to gel and a move like this could very well throw the proverbial wrench in things
What makes Merriman an “ego” problem?
I’m not saying he is a great guy or anything, but I don’t understand what makes him and “ego”. Is it the dance?

I don’t know if ego is the right word, but he’s had his share of off-the-field press.
I’d take a chance on him. I think our defense is probably better able to absorb a loud personality than the offense. Can you imagine the kind of verbal abuse that Moss could have heaped on Daboll?
But I doubt we’re spending more money this year.
you’re probably right, defenses are better able to absorb loud personalities however as you mentioned, his off field press doesn’t exactly fit into what Mangini wants as a player. I’ve never been a big fan of adopting another teams disgruntled players.
Good luck Colt. Carpe diem. Deliver a victory over Pats to go with the Saints win and you will put a death grip on the starting job and really give a lot of loyal fans a solid reason for optimism. After all the Couch Holcomb, DA or BQ BS – I am really hoping that Colt is a pleasant surprise for the fan base. Go Browns.

Given Seneca’s comments last week I’m surprised he isn’t on the field today. The way he was talking about the need to name a starter and the argument that he successfully ran the offense implied that he was ready to take the starting job back. But you have to be able to play on the field if you want to talk about starting…
Could it all be part of Mangini’s clever smokescreen or could we have a malcontent on our hands? All purely conjecture.
But given the problems the Pats had with the wildcat against the ’Fins, could we finally see it unleashed in full force this week? Can you imagine a package with McCoy lining up under center with Cribbs and Wallace set out wide, and Hillis in the backfield? All 4 of them can throw and catch the ball!!!

You never know. The trainer has to “clear” the player to practice. It could very well be that the doctor has been told to be extremely cautious. I will be listening to Seneca to see if he personally feels 100%. The one thing for sure, is that there is absolutely no reason to start Seneca if he isn´t perfectly healthy.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
Another thing to think about, in light of Seneca’s comments, could/would he accept the role of being the #2 guy behind a rookie. To take this one step further, lets say Colt is named the starter for the remainder of the season and both Jake and Seneca get healthy, what now, who becomes the number 2 guy, would either one want to be demoted to the #3 spot. I think no matter how you look at it, within the next couple weeks someone is not going to be a happy camper.
I think we have an easy, if not completely effective, way of keeping everyone happy if they are all healthy. Colt is the starter, Delhomme is the backup, Wallace is the package quarterback running cyclone.
Hopefully with Seneca healthy we can actually look at Cyclone package in a game.
In order to keep Delhomme happy though, we have to have all three active. No emergency QB for us.

That was a Tony Grossi BS article. If you read Seneca’s comments without the spin, there really was much ado about nothing. All he said is that a team should have a clear starter and that he believes he played well enough to be the starter. I would not expect any QB in the NFL to say anything different.

I think Tony Grossi just is pissed at Colt for some reason…Maybe jealous of his hot GF?

Thursday update: Grossi via Twitter
No Seneca Wallace or Jake Delhomme at practice again today. Mark it down: Colt McCoy will start Sun v. NE for #browns. #nfl

Woah Grossi. What about Cribbs or Ratliff? The Mangini has yet to speak!

Not that I look to Peter King for vindication but Mack’s play makes it harder and harder to argue against the draft day trade down last year.

I am not sure if I consider this good or bad.

It’s Peter King.
