what exactly about those quotes is supposed to show that they think it’s the coaches fault? There is absolutely no evidence to back up the accusation you’re making here.

It’s pretty clear…shouldn’t be too hard to figure out.

then enlighten me. They said the team came out flat. How is that on anyone but the players, and more importantly, how does Hillis and McCoy repeating what the coach said mean they are blaming the coach? Seriously, I don’t get this at all.

Players who played under Vince Lombardi and Bear Bryant were so intimidated by them that they feared losing. The intimidation and wrath factored into this. Players openly admitted after their experiences with these men that this fear was their primary motivating factor. It is possible to instill a sense of urgency in players. This is a different time in history. Pro players have a union. I don’t pretend to know what it will take to motivate players.
A football team that can beat 2 of the better playoff teams, but struggles against lesser competition may have a motivational problem. We should not dismiss the possibility that Eric Mangini is any more than an average motivator of players. Any time players call into question the effort put forward by their team, it points, even if indirectly, at what the coaching staff is doing to motivate.

Well, what current successful coach can you say this about? You can’t compare these coaches from 30 years ago, because these things really don’t apply to ANYONE in current coaching.

but struggles against lesser competition may have a motivational problem.

It may also be a team with little depth that has played tough for so long and are getting worn out.

no one is dimissing the possibility. Though the last part is just wrong (it can sometimes point to that but not “any time”)

I concede that the phrase “it points to” is vague. In my head, it means that the pointing is inclusive of the coaching but not necessarily exclusively to the coaching.

yes. this makes more sense and I can agree with this. It can imply problems with coaching but doesn’t mean that.

I’m not sure why you debated my points the way you did. I gave examples of coaches that were extremely successful at motivating and also pointed out that this is a day when different motivational factors are needed. But, you point out exactly what I did in a way that implies disagreement.

I think the time period is too vastly different to compare. The union, free agency, and more money have made that type of leadership impossible in today’s NFL.

I’m not saying Mangini is a great motivator (though last year’s finish certainly makes that argument). I’m saying the statements made by McCoy and Hillis do not place blame on the coaches at all. These are grown men, if they can’t motivate themselves to play football, they’ll be out of the league soon anyway.

Sports psychology has disproved those methods, to the extent that you believe in soft sciences.

They won by motivating with fear because everyone motivated with fear and they were good coaches.

As someone who also writes (when I can) I just want to say that this kind of crap is really weak and incredibly disrespectful. I don’t care if you don’t like it, he took the time and wrote it, show some respect. This isn’t a national writer, this is someone who contributes to conversations here.

If you don’t like it, then keep going. There is no need to stop and trash someone because you don’t like it. Grow the hell up. If you have a different opinion, feel free to voice it. But don’t be a dick about it.

there is something to be said about someone here coming and their only participation is “pimping their blog” and not many people here enjoy said blog. The user almost never comments, and even when he does, his blog is linked in his sig.

Wasn’t trying to be a dick, I genuinely don’t. This is really the only reason he comes here.To get free publicity for his own damn articles. And I wrote on here as well, so does that make it okay then?

Also, why single me out? Golan made fun of him because the article is also on the BR. Then on his next fanshot everyone started ridiculing hm and making jokes about taking “so and so” to be a coach at “wherever.” But I be blunt about it and I get canned. I understand it seems harsh but I am obviously not the only one who feels the same way. My comment was also recced, as well.

Does Chris get free publicity over on Dawg Scooper?

Because I kind of think it’s disrespectful to Chris to come here solely to hype his own articles. He did have some sweet video of training camp…if Chris is fine with it, I am.

And if they were, it would not be something we should be celebrating. Even if the coaching staff were to blame, players should not be calling them out, especially a rookie with five starts under his belt.

I didn’t see anything in either McCoy’s or Peyton’s statements that could be remotely construed as ‘calling out’ the coaching staff. A rallying cry to to their teammates? Perhaps. Note that they used the word ‘we’ repeatedly in their statements. Nothing controversial to it as far as I can see.

that being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing a coach get in his or anyone else’s face when they screw up.

Even Billicheck does that on occasion, and he’s pretty unemotional.

You do have to try different things to inspire guys and get them to respond.

heck, hand the pre-game talk of to Rob Ryan if you need to. Or someone just needs to man up and have a personality on this team (example: Ray Lewis).

by discoinferno083 on Jan 2, 2011 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think you are reading too much in to things.

What do you want them to do? Rob Ryan is one of the loudest guys out there and he couldn’t motivate our defense to stop the run.

Daboll does need to stop going to his hiding place in the middle of games, though. We score and move the ball on early drives, then stop playing offense for 2-3 quarters, then try to move the ball again once we realize we are down by 2+ scores late in the 4th. This has happened all year.

I don’t care if we simply install Mack Brown’s playbook; spread them out and throw. It works what seems like every time we do it, we just don’t have the time we need to score enough to win.

I’m actually somewhat shocked by how well we throw the ball with McCoy out there.

I’d like to add that we should allow Colt to audible to a pass against 8+ in the box. Or go to those “X look/X stay” things.

Daboll just needs to look across at the other coaches and see the BABYHEAD. Quit letting him “go for a pretzel”.

No talking. Talking doesn't play football, talking isn't going to make you practice harder or play harder.
