I will say though that Delhomme couldn’t do jack with Steve Smith. Not expecting miracles to happen with our guys.

I started watching in the first when we were up by 10. Then I came back with 4 minutes left, and I’m glad I did.
Next year, transferring loyalties from OSU to Clemson’s going to be tough. They lost to NC State and I didn’t even blink an eye. I guess I’ll probably care more once I go to the games and such. (I’m still rooting for OSU but I’m going to keep that on the down low at first haha).

If we sign Delhomme it will lead me to believe three things
1. We are going to draft a young QB for him to mentor
2. We are going to run the ball 40 + times per game next year
3. Quinn is probably gone
Would going with Quinn as the starter and Wallace as the backup be so bad? I mean, barring a miracle we aren’t winning more than 8 games next year. If in 2010 Quinn can’t produce despite what I think will be a very solid run game then we cut our losses.
I think it’s an indication that Holmgren thinks Quinn sucks.

Yes, but when the Browns are ready to compete, McNabb will be ready to retire. Out of your second round pick, you need to obtain long-term value. McNabb simply isn’t long-term value.
This is my only problem with trading a 2nd for him. He’s worth it, but we aren’t ready for the trade.

I agree, we need a good QB more than anything else on this team. A good QB can elevate the play of all others around him. I’m not sure whether Lefevour will be it or not. I’ve said that I get the feeling Holmgren likes the kid, but who knows. I would LOVE to see us move up and grab Bradford. I’m not on the Clausen or McCoy bandwagon.
And I agree with you, about Clausen and McCoy. I think Colt was the product of a good system and had a good set of WRs with him. Now I’m not taking anything away from him, but I don’t feel he’ll come into the league and make an impact right away.
I think Clausen is very high on himself, coming from Notre Dame, and all. You know, the Yankees of college football if you will, cause they’re just SO great at what they do.

He just seems to fit Holmgrens style…later round pick with pretty good intangibles, strong arm, ect…someone he can groom to his liking. It just seems like it would be a good option for Holmgren.

Well of all the QBs other than Bradford and Clausen, I think LeFevour has the most going for him. He has a nice over-the-top release that can make him play even taller than 6-3. His arm strength isn’t a huge weakness like say Colt McCoy, and his production has been fantastic at CMU that last two years.
His drawback is having played in a spread offense against MAC competition. Also he disappointed a lot of scouts by not throwing at the combine. He could be a good guy but a lot of teams might like him later in the draft.

I disagree. I watched him play. I also watched pike play and have seen tape on some of the other QBs.
Lefevour I believe has enough arm strength to make all the necessary throws in the NFL. he doesn’t have anything special, but his arm strength is just strong enough to not majorly hinder him at the next level. it is signficantly better than pike’ and better than McCoy’s

Well then who do you want in this draft? We probably can’t get Bradford or Clausen. If we could I don’t think I would take Clausen anyway. I don’t think anybody here wants McCoy or Tebow in the second.. Those are the only qbs who will go in the first or second rounds (most likely).
Getting a veteran who is mediocre might lead us to an 8-8 team or something like that next year but we wouldn’t make the playoffs and if we did we would get smashed in the first round because our QB play is adequate at best.
We might as well take a chance on a youthful guy with some physical tools and upside. If we hit on our choice (Quinn, LeFevour or Troy Smith are basically the best / only options) we can win some games and have found a qb who can be here for a few years. If we completely miss and the season crumbles, well we will be higher in the draft next year and much more able to acquire one of these “good” first round qbs you want.

I’m with BB in saying no thanks to LeFevour. There’s going to be great value in the middle rounds this year, and IMO picking LeFevour will be a wasted pick. The last thing that this organization needs is more wasted picks.

I was persuaded by B19K’s article and other times I"ve read about the rarity of good QBs from later in the draft.
But regardless of what we think should happen, Holmgren has a history of stockpiling QBs from trades, free agency, and late in the draft. Guys like LeFevour seem like a real possibility.

If a QB is far and away the best player on the board in the 4th, why not? Virtually no risk with a bigtime potential (albeit very unlikely) reward.
If there is someone in the 4th who could help the team and is a lot better at what he does than a QB, then we should take that guy.
It isn’t like we are the Vikings with a dominant team that only needs a QB to be a SB contender. We can afford to build the rest of the team and wait for a QB. If that means that Quinn or some late-round guy develops or if we get a 1st round QB in next year or the year after’s draft, then we can wait. The only star player we have that’s aging is Rogers.

You guys misunderstand. I want to find a good qb for the browns. I don’t hear any suggestions of who you guys like for the job. Somebody has to play it this year, and it isn’t going to be Sam Bradford.
Any qb in the draft from Clausen on down is probably a possibility. So are veterans who are currently in the league. Probably the only quarterbacks that are available with any measure of youth at all are Quinn or Smith.
I was just making the argument that I feel it would be better for the team to give a younger guy the shot, as you aren’t going to win a super bowl with a guy like Jake Delhomme anyway. So we might as well take a chance on a mid round guy or Quinn this year and see if we can find our guy that way. If the experiment fails miserably and we go 5-11 again… well at least we will be high in the draft next year and have a decent shot at whatever QBs are available next April.
I’m all ears for your guys’ suggestions who you think looks good on film that the Browns could acquire this offseason. LeFevour clearly looks like the best mid round guy, due to his over the top release and good toughness.

Any of the QBs on the roster can start this year.
There is no sense in drafting someone in the later rounds and thrusting him in to action or getting bad value in a trade for a young QB with upside.
We can go 5-11 again and get Locker or someone else next year, but we need to improve our overall roster.
We need to find a young, talented QB at some point and whenever we find that guy, we will probably get a 4-6 win boost in our record. But if that is this offseason, next, or the one after, it won’t matter. Our roster is young and full of holes.

I agree. I’d rather not spend a third or 4th round pick on a QB. If we want to start brady, great. If we can trade brady for good value, great.
If we trade brady, sign Ravens-QB-who-must-not-be-named. It’s not like this team will have anything to lose this year. (QB play cannot get any worse than it was last year)

I really do not want Troy Smith, anyone who went to Ohio State, anyone from northern Ohio, anyone from anywhere in or around Cleveland, anyone who’s father or mother or great aunt went to OSU, or anyone who is a lifelong fan of the Browns to be in the mix at quarterback. If Quinn gets it done, then great, but if not, I think it’d be in our best interest to look to someone with no ties to the area, the organization or the Buckeyes. Someone from way the hell out west who’s never been to Ohio and who can’t even find Ohio on a map. That’s our guy. Someone who will sink or swim on his own merits and who won’t stoke the delusions of the long suffering and insufferable homers who make up a significant portion of our fan base.

I have watched Terrelle Pryors every single home game as a Buckeye in person. He will never be a good quarterback in the NFL. He has terrible mechanics and I’m not sure he can digest an NFL playbook.

Except by Smith’s senior year he had built himself into a pretty decent pro prospect. His release is a thousand times better than Pryor’s ever will be.
Most importantly, in terms of work ethic and intangibles the two players are not in the same category at all. Troy Smith is on a different planet than Pryor in terms of work ethic in the film room and in team meetings. Pryor frankly isn’t as intelligent on the field and hasn’t displayed the same kind of fantastic leadership qualities that I felt Smith had.
I’ve met them both in person and I think Pryor would really have to change his attitude to even think about playing QB in the NFL

jaws, once again you don’t know what you’re talking about. I watched Troy Smith in the Spring Game when he was a sophomore and he was just as bad as Pryor. He made great improvements by the time he was a senior and there is no reason that Pryor can’t do the same. Pryor is better now than Smith was at this point in his career.

They are totally different players. I don’t know why you are down my throat about this. Terrelle Pryor might have a little bit better results on the field but his game as it is right now just wouldn’t translate to the NFL level.
Pryor always has been the more impressive physical form but his release is much worse, his decision making (other than the rose bowl, which it was alright) has been much worse. Worst of all he has an attitude of entitlement that Troy Smith never had.
I’ve seen both players live, talked to them briefly in person. I hear rumblings from people I have class with who are in the weight room with the guys, people covering the games for the paper.
Pryor could work hard and improve by the time he is a senior, the way Troy did, but he has yet to do that, and he has a longer mountain to climb because Troy never had such bad passing mechanics.
Troy Smith might never be a great NFL quarterback, but I could see it happening potentially. I cannot see Terrelle Pryor becoming a solid NFL starter.

I know quite a few things about Troy Smith while he was at Ohio State. Some of them are unprintable. He was not the role-model people portray him to be. Not only is jaws wrong on his view of TS, but he is actually supporting the far lazier player.
I haven’t seen any mention of Jarrett Brown on here from WVU. I personally do NOT want him on the browns, but I’m just curious what you guys think of him as a QB from a non WVU fan perspective.
I would use a late rounder on him. He has great athleticism, all the necessary tools, and could have been good if Pat White wasn’t ahead of him.

I’d love to keep BQ, but it’s not gonna happen. He’s gonna go for a pick somewhere, Seneca’s gonna start, and I hope that Delhomme is nothing more than an older Ken Dorsey. If he actually plays for us I might cry. There’s not a lot if ways to get worse QB play than what we’ve had, but that’s one of them.

Holmgren knows QBs!!!! and im pretty sure at this point he has one picked out early on in the draft.To start a good team you have to have a QB and anyone but Tebow is a better pick than what weve had lol thats for sure.

this is the only sbnation blog ive been to that is so damn anal about the subject line. then again most of my teams are southern and we tend to take things easy in the south. :)

i think i’ve seen people at FTS use it, though i haven’t been there in a while, and they get a lot of other teams’ fans on their blog, so that could be it.

Yeah, most of people at FTS who don’t also post at LGT or DBN use it. We’ve tried to convert them but so far they haven’t learned.
Plus, as you said, we get a lot of visitors from other sites there (mostly trolls coming to bash LeBron) and they all use it.

Yep. I guess I never realized that a large segment of sports fans would hate someone just because he’s popular. Plus, there isn’t a large group of intelligent regular posters built up there yet, like we have at LGT and DBN, who can drive away the idiots and keep the discussions intelligent. Too many times on that site an entire thread will be taken over by trolls, and it makes it very difficult to have a reasonable discussion at times. It’s too bad, but I’ve stopped visiting there as often just because there are so many idiots all over the place that it really detracts from the quality of the site.

yeah I started going there a few months ago and was blown away that there were that many trolls there. I also agree about the lack of intelligent posters there, but while I might understand basketball better than the average fan, I don’t know that i understand it enough to really know what I’m talking about. Same thing with LGT, I know i understand baseball better than the “dolan is cheap! sell the team!” fans, but I don’t have nearly the depth of baseball knowledge that the regulars over there do.

Its not a bad idea to bring a true veteran presence to the team. Veterans are usually better game managers and this team hasn’t had a true veteran with a stable successful background in a long time. And if we draft a rookie he’s good to sit behind.

Ntn made a comment about a stable background. A background can only occur in the past, so Rockland said he was stable from 03-08.

if he was joking that we should get him, it wasn’t that funny…honestly, I just felt after thinking about it, what a team like that would look like.
He wasn’t joking that we should get him; he was simply responding to NTN’s comment about finding a QB with a stable background by showing that Delhomme fit that description. I don’t think he was arguing that meant he was going to be good next season.
Either way, your response was very harsh in its tone and that wasn’t necessary. He never said to go out an acquire a team of players that was great 5 years ago.

Why would you want to be a backup on the Browns when you could be a backup and potentially play in the playoffs?
