The Pittsburgh Steelers are Hypocrites?

I was wondering to myself recently whether or not the Steelers would punish Roethlisberger even if he were to escape legal trouble after his most recent "incident."

Suddenly, I recalled a similar incident with former Steelers WR Cedrick Wilson.  Wilson was cut for this indiscretion and Steelers team Chairman Dan Rooney said of the release, "The Steelers do not condone violence of any kind, especially against women."

Ben and Cedrick, though, were not the only Steelers that have been violent against women. Steelers Pro Bowl LB, James Harrison, had a little incident of his own. Was he cut from the Steelers? Actually, Harrison was not cut, but rather given a $51 million contract extension.

So my question to the Pittsburgh Steelers is, do you tolerate violence against women or not? Or is it one of those things where it's okay if you are a Pro Bowler?

This is a fan-created post. Dawgs By Nature assumes no responsibility for the content listed.

i think you raise good points, especially with harrison. however in this case, as much as i hate roethlisberger, i don’t blame them for waiting to see if charges are filed. if they are, and the team doesn’t act swiftly, i’ll be the first to criticize them for it.

also, even if charges aren’t filed, the team should sit him down and rip him a new ass for his behavior and for putting himself in these positions in the first place. though i’m sure they won’t. they ’ll just trumpet their golden boy and blame everyone else.

by Dawg Nuts on Mar 11, 2010 10:16 AM EST reply actions

I agree completely. They should let the situation play out for making any decision, I am just wondering if they will act consistently with past if the allegations hold any merit.

exactly. the hypocricy isn’t the being cut, but the quote by rooney. I understand the being cut, but if you say you don’t condone violence of any kind, why not cut harrison? is one’s crime worse than the other? Actually, in their eyes Harrison’s wasn’t as bad b/c he was a good player…or at least that is what their actions say.

Steeler Fan Disclaimer

Coming from my point of view your article hits many heated points that have been discussed over at BTSC. Although I wouldn’t say Steeler fans are hypocrites, if charges are filed and BB is guilty the case in the hands of ownership. Should they not act swiftly you could call them hypocrites. The court of public opinion on BB is very split right now after his latest act of foolishness. I personally don’t think there is any place for it charges or not. There is a strong movement within the fan base that wants him out.
As for the Cedric Wilson situation. he walked into a crowded restaurant walked up to his girl and hit her. There was no debate if he did it or not, the evidence was plain as day. I think BB is an ass with the ladies and I’m sure somethings not right. Should he catch charges and eventually be convicted I would expect the Rooney’s to part ways without hesitation.
Also one closing point…I don’t care what franchise in pro sports you are running, but your franchise 100M player will and probably should get preferrential treatment over say a third WR. That is he world we live in, not sure how hypocritical that really is.

by TheCommish on Mar 13, 2010 10:00 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree with almost everything you say here. I agree that your franchise qb will get preferential treatment. I don’t agree that he should. just because that’s how the world works doesn’t make it any less hypocritical.

by Brownie's Year on Mar 13, 2010 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with you which is why I put the question mark at the end of the title. There is not enough evidence yet for the Rooney’s to make a decision on Ben. I do think it is hypocritical as someone else in this thread said, to make an example of a 2nd string player and use talking points like Rooney did, while ignoring it for a bigger name player if that is what turns out to happen.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 13, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

There is one major difference between those cases and Big Ben’s case. Ben has not yet been arrested or charged…yet. There is also a larger stigma

And it may not be fair, but life isn’t fair. If you are a replaceable WR like Wilson you best be on your best behavior, if you are a superstar and you make the team millions of dollars, the team will see what they can do to keep the money coming in. At the end of the day this is all a business and is about making money.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 11, 2010 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

The difference is one guy can be made an example of because his talent level was expendable, and the others guys are an intricate part of the teams success. We all know why Wilson could be cut, but Roethlisberger not, but this is the only forum where anyone will even mention the debate.
Kudos, Mr.Dorn.

This is precisely it. Talk is cheap when it came to backing up the convictions after the Wilson release.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 12, 2010 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

You don´t want to support a guy with a pending case, if you´re not an eye witness. And if they claim it was off camera, so to speak, with a star the credibility goes down. You start talking in what ifs, but if it didn´t happen, you have to curse the system for allowing 300 million people to accuse a guy, on a whim, at any given time.
Now if Ben is a dastardly, bastardly goon, well yeah, then you´d bag him.
But personally I think he´s the Big Bear in the big blue house.
And if he did molest those women, beyond an acceptable flirtatious environment, I´m of course extremely dissappointed. Usually there is some kind of innuendo, for these accusations to even have a base. We´ll need the nasty details, I guess.
But until then, I guess he´s a semi fugitive in two states, as seems to be acceptable in the states.

Hmm

From what I recall Cedrick Wilson DID hit his GF. He cam out and said he did it. As of now, all we know about Ben is that he has been accused two times. The first one, Ms. McNulty, pretty much appears that she was just crazy and called rape after a sexual encounter. As far as this second one, Ben is innocent until proven guilty and nothing surmountable has come out about the case. Ben has denied both occurrences. I am not saying he did or did not sexual assault anyone, just making a point. If teams went ahead and kicked every player off their team because of accusations I would file a lawsuit against every QB the Steelers faced, claiming he touched me inappropriately.

Anyway, I do believe that Ben will be in deep S, not with just the law but with the Rooneys, if it turns out that he sexually assaulted this woman. To what extent the punishment will be I will not speculate.

Additionally, I believe Harrison’s case was similar to Ben’s. He denied the accusation and then the charges were dropped.

But there is no doubt that he is a moron. I think the reason we hate him so much is not because he is just a Steeler, but because he is living such a charmed life in spite of himself.

From what any of us can tell is that we know really nothing about the case.

This is completely wrong. We know that Ben says that someone who accused him of serious crimes “slipped and hit her head”. We know that someone accused Ben of serious crimes and that there is enough to go on that police are investigating the matter and not dismissing it outright. We know Ben had contact with this woman. We know he has denied having sexual intercourse with this woman. We know two investigators are working full-time on this case. We know two more investigators are working part time on it. We know Ben loves nightlife, drinking, and aggressively hitting on girls:

Amber Hanley, a 21-year-old college student, said she and a few friends were also in the VIP area with Roethlisberger. She said she asked the quarterback to take a photo with her friend, who was a fan, but he seemed disappointed that’s all she wanted. Hanley said she rolled her eyes, and Roethlisberger called her an expletive and walked away. Later, Roethlisberger was aggressively hitting on another girl, Hanley said.

We know restaurant/bar owners have claimed he has tried to slip out on bills. We know Ben has been anything but elegant in the public eye, often being photographed in questionable situations. We know that he has been accused of sexual assault more than once, although he has not been found guilty.

None of that is completely conjecture.

I don’t think he’d be banned from the league. It wouldn’t be the first time an NFL player sexually assaulted a woman. However, that’s much irrelevant because I believe if found guilty the jail time ranges from 18months to 5 years of prison in Georgia.

Wow, just wow. I went over to the steelers blog to see what they thought of the whole thing. What a bunch of terrible people. Somebody said she was probably some dumb bitch who regretted sleeping with him and then cried rape, because that happens to stars all the time. Then someone from a different blog explained that sexual assault is actually an under-reported claim and very few athletes, let alone big stars, are ever accused of it. the response to that was:

I hate people like you that think they are holier than thou. Is the reason you hate jocks because they kicked your pansy ass and took your lunch money in school?

I can understand wanting to wait till he’s been proven guilty, but the overwhelming opinion over there seems to be that ben is a saint and this is obviously some whore looking for a check.

this is from another post on their site, the link to it can be found in the new “around the pound.”

Do I want Ben Roethlisberger quarterbacking the Steelers in the future? Even if he is guilty of some sort of wrongdoing beyond merely carrousing with college students and making a tawdry advance at a young lady in a bar restroom? Yes, yes I do. I’m no legal expert, but I did a quick perusal of Georgian sexual assault laws and read that sexual battery (non-aggravated) is a misdemeanor, not a felony. It’s a serious misdemeanor, but we’re not (usually) talking jail time. Again, we don’t know what happened, but assuming Big Ben did in fact sexually assault this woman, I personally don’t think he’s committed a transgression that merits blackballing him from the Steelers organization permanently.
he goes on to explain that his reason for wanting ben even if he’s convicted is because ben is a good quarterback. I draw the line there. I can’t respect a person who would forgive someone for sexual assault just because they’re a good football player.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

Ben made ANOTHER stupid mistake with whatever occurred in GA. That said, he is the best QB in the game in crunch time. He is the best QB in the league to lead this band of athlete’s.
