About the Jake Delhomme acquisition.
Jake Delhomme makes sense to me under one set of circumstances and one set only. Mike Holmgren as resolved himself to find a developmental quarterback this year. He has a guy in mind that he thinks could be a very good quarterback in the NFL but probably needs to sit out at least one if not two full seasons before he is ready to start.
Now I am not campaigning for this. I don't even know if it's a good idea, but the guy that I am betting Holmgren has targeted is....
Tim Tebow
Yeah. I know what you are thinking. I know you will be running the car in the garage if you hear Tebow's name called. I know what the pro scouts are saying but... Keep this in mind: The NFL has a lot of coaching incest. The NFL is xenophobic strategically and offers little incentive to anyone thinking outside the box. Unless you have a reputation that is above reproach (like Holmgren's) you just can't do anything too wacky or you will get fired.
If you have read this far, well I'll give you credit, you didn't abandon me as soon as you saw that picture. Before you present the same reasons why we all know Tebow will have trouble adjusting to an NFL offense, consider the slim and interesting possibility that Mike Holmgren might just have other machinations for the Browns. He might just be more ambitious than we all think.
With the success of the wildcat, teams have been more and more open to the idea of bringing some aspects of the slightly more varied college game into the professional ranks. With the number of teams running spread offenses in the college game, pro style quarterbacks and receivers are becoming less and less available in the draft. Sooner or later the spread offense will worm its way into the NFL. For a more in-depth explanation of the NFL offense and why things that don't look like the NFL offense aren't gimmicks. Take a look at this article. (smartfootball.com awesome resource for learning about the finer points of football strategy)
All it takes is one aggressive organization to dare to be different. Why not now? Why not with Tebow? After all he is easily the most accomplished and talented spread QB ever. If a team showed that it was willing to design its schemes around Tebow's talents and use him the way Urban Meyer did, there could be a whole lot of analysts and scouts with egg on their faces.
Now I know you think I'm crazy by now, but the scenario isn't as far-fetched as you might think. Mike Holmgren learned under Bill Walsh, who is exalted for being an offensive innovator because he dared to go against conventional wisdom. Holmgren is the kind of guy who is established enough and who is confident enough to make such a bold move. After all, former Holmgren disciples Jon Gruden and Andy Reid are the most high profile NFL guys who have openly supported the spread offense. Jon Gruden has expressed on several occasions that he would select Tebow with the #1 overall pick. Andy Reid went against conventional wisdom and signed Michael Vick last year. The success Reid had running the zone read and shovel option is one of the big reasons why the Eagles' offense was so good a season ago.
Jake Delhomme could buy Holmgren the two seasons he needs to both develop Tebow as a passer and surround him with talent on this roster. Delhomme and Wallace are west coast offense guys who could step right in and run this team with minimal coaching. Holmgren would be free to develop his new guy.
Cleveland might be the ideal place to try such an ambitious plan for several reasons:
- Our franchise is so starved for winning we could be desperate enough to try something that other teams would consider outrageous, even if it really isn't.
- Our coaching staff are some of the most competent defensive minds in the league. They could be much more agreeable to allowing Holmgren to shape the offensive side of the ball, while they themselves are trusted with the defensive side.
- We have some interesting personnel for the scheme: Josh Cribbs is the perfect player for that "Percy Harvin" position, where he can be a hybrid RB Wideout with great skills in space. Ben Watson is a versatile "Aaron Hernandez" guy who can do a lot of good things on the zone read playaction to beat the crash/scrape.
- And most importantly, Randy Learner wants nothing more than to not interfere with Holmgren. Other owners might not buy into his ambitious plan.
I know you are still skeptical, to say the least. Keep in mind that Tebow has elite physical tools, and perhaps the best "intangibles" the draft has ever seen. Except for his release and the system he played in being so dissimilar to the NFL in terms of what it demands from the quarterback position, this kid would be one of the most sought after prospects of all time. One could argue that the reason the quarterback class is so poor this year is because of the perception of Tebow; he was easily the biggest difference maker at the QB position in the country the last 3 seasons.
Now, when Holmgren was hired, this kind of radical plan is the last thing I would have expected, but with the acquisition of Delhomme, the seed has been planted in the back of my mind. Holmgren might actually have a master plan. His most ambitious turnaround in a career of big turnarounds could just start with a couple of 7-9 teams led by Jake Delhomme. It is just crazy enough to be true. All I know for sure is that this season going to be interesting.

A lot of NFL players probably play the game for the paycheck, but if there is anybody in this draft class who really won’t ever stop until they’re great, it’s Tebow. This article actually really got me excited to the prospect of drafting him. I would probably love the guy if I didn’t still despise Florida for their whacking of OSU in the Nat’l Championship game a few years back.
I would be damn proud if this were my starting quarterback:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sGv2Zw-WQw&feature=related
So at this point I have to assume we’re heading into the regular season with 5 QBs? Or are we shedding Quinn and Ratliff in the process?
So what’s the draft for? Are we bringing in 11 cornerbacks? I realize I’m not privy to all the inner workings of this organization, but it’s starting to look like the cabin scene in A Night at the Opera.
I think that if college style football works its way into the NFL, then the NFL shouldn’t even exist. The NFL needs to be a different game from college football, and just rolling over and saying “Alright we’ll adjust to you because this is the way you played in college” is not how it works. That is never how it will work. If they do draft Tebow I hope it isn’t cause they want to run an offense like the University of Florida did. They need to draft someone who will be that QB the Browns need and build around him just like every other franchise quarterback. Give him receivers and backs to work with. But it all starts with a QB, and who that guy will be is only speculation.
1. Tebow has nothing close to “elite” physical tools for the NFL. Not his size, not his speed, not his power, not his arm strength…
2. Even Chris at Smart Football buys in to some of the arguments about some college offenses being less successful in the NFL. We couldn’t just copy and paste Florida’s offense and miraculously become a playoff team.
3. “The Spread” does not mean less QBs who can throw and less WRs who can catch—necessarily. Also, some spread concepts are already in the NFL and they are already bigtime successful. See: Colts, Indianapolis, Patriots, New England, Cardinals, Arizona, Saints, New Orelans, Eagles, Philadelphia, etc.
4. If you are going to be “crazy” and install a “college” offense, you must go all-in. In other words, I would be against doing it this year. You would have to declare Tebow/other guy the starter, and Delhomme would be useless. We would not succeed hedging our bets with some normal “NFL” offense for Delhomme and the majority “College” offense for X QB.
Players understand the Wildcat as a package, but we already have a great WC package (and wouldn’t need to draft Tebow for it) and it seems to me you suggest a full-on transition to the Florida offense. If we did that, we wouldn’t be developing anyone, it would have to be an all-in move. In the situation where we “develop” this offense/QB, that sea change wouldn’t happen for at least one year.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I think he meant like, gradually bring tebow and the more and more unconventional offense along. Use Delhomme in the regular west coast as a stopgap while Tebow develops into a more complete player under Holmgren. Sorta like Tebow’s freshman year at florida. Definitely can’t just try some wacky new thing next year.
You wouldn’t be able to go “all in” until one or two years down the road, when tebow and the rest of the personnel were ready for it.
It is probably a big fail waiting to happen but I’m now a huge fan of this idea. It would just be fun as hell to watch.
Its still a crazy idea, however interesting. I don’t see holmgren doing something that unexpected.
"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."
I’ve been harping “Player Development” for a while. This is something the Browns do not know how to do anymore. All things being equal, Quinn was not developed properly at the Pro level, for the “Pro Style offense” and thats what he played in college. What makes you think that these bozo’s will take the time with Tebow? Tebow will never be a Brown (at leaset until he’s all washed up and broken down – I mean Delhomme).
Animadvertistine, ubicumque stes, fumum recta in faciem ferri?
Last season was a study in player development. Mangini is not Crennel or Davis or Palmer. Player development is at the core of his talent as a coach.

I agree completely. It really pisses me off when people post on here about how the browns will always be bad, and we can never promote talent, or develop players. PEOPLE we actually have a FO that is legit. And Mangini is a much better coach than many give him credit for!! I do not believe this will be another “maybe next year” regime in the FO. They will get it done this time. Possibly not this year, but they will get it done. Rebuilding a team with our lack of talent and dysfunction takes a while. Only difference is we have GREAT experience in all our FO positions. The glass is half full my friend…half full
I think it highly likely we’ll see a developmental QB picked up in the draft this year. Will it be Tebow? Who knows. I think the analysis above is interesting and well-reasoned but highly speculative. But it is really hard to believe that Holmgren is going to go into this next season with Delhomme and Wallace as the future of the team at the QB position. With Quinn already gone and this reasoning I think Ratliff should also be packing his bags. If anything, this will at least be interesting!

Love the Team not the Players
I like Gold Star better myself, granted I’ve only been back to cincinatti twice since I moved 10 years ago, so maybe my tastes have changed.
