I emailed yahoot his offseason begging for more customization including keeper league format and the ability to trade future draft picks. Hopefully they listen.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 16, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a huge fan of keeper leagues, but they should definitely offer that. And I love the draft pick trading idea! The idea of trading up or down in a fantasy draft for a certain player in exchange for more later picks much like in the real draft seems like it could be a lot of fun.

by Simmsinns on Mar 16, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I run a league with my friends and family that has gone on for years.

Total keeper league with trading of draft picks.

Brings so much excitement to the league. It makes sure that everyone plays out the season even if they suck.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 16, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what I’d like — a keeper league with trades. Too bad I don’t know 12 people.

I usually just pick a public league and hope that there’s still 4 or 5 active teams by mid-season. Mostly I just try to best my point total from the year before.

Dawgs By Nature -- where Hitler, apparently, 'did some good things'.

by golanbatrac on Mar 16, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what my friends and I switched to. We also made it so that the 4 teams that don’t make the playoffs actually have a consolation tournament for 1st overall pick, so tanking doesn’t get you anything. You have to have the right trade off between trading away your players for next year picks and then also a good enough team to win consolation, while also maintaining keepers. Makes the league so entertaining.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 16, 2010 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I am honestly feeling Georgetown losing to OU.

It is a stretch but a lot of times you have to go with streaks and trends.

OU is 6-4 in their last 10. the 4 losses were all within 5 points and 2 were overtime games. they dominated the MAC tournament too and played some excellent basketball down the stretch after starting off the season bad.

G’Town started off the season great but has slumped as of late. They were 5-6 in their last 11 games before the tourney. they had a loss at home to UCF who isn’t that good and lost to decent teams on the road. they are slumping a bit even though they made it fairly far in their tournament. I believe they lost to your mountaineers.

If OU comes out strong like they did against kent they could take down georgetown.

I think WVU will not lose to morgan state though.

Look at who they were playing, only Kent, Wright State, and Akron had winning records. Add in Buffalo, Western Michigan. Only 5 of their last 12 victories were over teams with winning records.

I have G’Town going up against OSU in the sweet 16.

I was just saying at the time they were a possible 13 or 14 seed who could upset.

However, this year I think the 13 and 14 seeds are weaker than last year and the 3-4 seeds are a bit stronger (with the exception of purdue)

Vandy (Ogilvy is overrated), Maryland (Vasquez? baah), Purdue (no Hummel) I don’t see getting past the first weekend.

G’town possibly, Wisconsin and New Mexico I want to say no, but I’m not overly familiar with New Mexico and I never bet on a Bo Ryan game cause i always end up getting screwed no matter which way i go, Baylor i’ve yet to see that they are for real and not hype and Pittsburgh can be streaky and would have a tough second round match up against again Xavier.

I have no confidence in any of the 3 and 4s.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 18, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

yep. all 3 teams I have losing in the 2nd round. MD to MSU, Purdue to Utah State, and Vandy to UTEP (I think…whoever plays butler)

I am saying more that they are a bit stronger in the fact that it will be unlikely that there will be a first round upset which happens 20% of the time (or 4 out of every 5 years)

I have some confidence in georgetown…except going up against tOSU or Kansas.

New Mexico is a very good team and are a very solid #3. Baylor is a team I really like. they shoot the ball well and have a great backcourt, plus they have a solid frontcourt and rebound well. their perimeter D is solid enough, and their interior D is dynamite.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 16, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, Kansas certainly has plenty of star power themselves, but I could definitely see Evan Turner going all ‘Melo-in-’03 on everybody in the tourney. OSU has more than just Turner, as well — Buford and Lighty are both really good all-around players and if Diebler is hitting 3’s then they’re almost impossible to beat. They’re a really fun team to watch because they all play so well together. The worry is a really deep team — such as Kansas — running them out of the gym. And if any of their starters get in foul trouble then they’re toast.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 16, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Kansas has size both in talent and depth. It would be a tough matchup for OSU. They would really need to be clicking from the perimeter to win it.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 16, 2010 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

or evan turner would have t turn it on too. Kansas has talent but many analysts say and I agree, that OSU might have the best starting 5 in all of NCAAB. the problem is, their bench has some nice players, but if you have to dip into the bench significantly, you will not be able to win against a good team like kansas.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 16, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Kansas was the only team that I was scared of matching up with. I’m really upset that the Buckeyes got put in their bracket because they are definitely one of the two top 2-seeds. They should have been with Syracuse or Duke, and I would have made them the favorites against either of them.

For OSU to beat Kansas they’re really going to need to hit their 3’s — Diebler needs to be on fire. Of course, I wouldn’t be upset if a team like Michigan St. or Maryland could knock out Kansas before they get there. I could see Michigan St. doing that; they’re always tough in March.

That is what I see with kansas facing OSU. Kansas always seems to have a deep team. Depth I know is a problem for OSU.

I just love watching OSU play this year. they have so many great all around players that do so many things.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 16, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Am I the only person who sees a better Brandon Roy when they watch Evan Turner?

Maybe it is bias, but I would take Turner over Wall.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 16, 2010 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it was Wilbon that said Turner reminds him of a young Dwayne Wade. He can just do so much offensively. If he ever develops an outside shot he’ll be deadly.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 16, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. I think he is a unique player not like either one. Walterfootball compared him to scottie pippen. I think that is a pretty fair assessment.

The thing about Turner is he is a great passer and a very good rebounder. He is not like wade b/c he is 3 inches taller and a great rebounder. Roy was a solid rebounder for a guard, but his game is not exactly like turner’s. I think turner’s game most resemble’s pippen. He has a similar body to pippen and a similar game.

Turner I consider a point forward. he can pass but can also rebound and is 6’7’’. He does remind me a little of pippen coming out b/c of the athleticism, rebounding, and passing. I think pippen was a little more physical of a player but turner might be a better passer than pippen was in college. they put up similar college stats too. Neither one was an established 3 point shooter coming out (when turner gets drafted) but pippen was probably a bit better.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 16, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

(adding on) I also think he could see less of a learning curve than pippen did. pippen didn’t really blossom until his 3rd NBA season. He went to a small school, Central Arkansas, and didn’t face the type of competition turner faces in the big 10. I was actually looking up and I think the team at the time was an NAIA team…(at least as low as D2 from what I found out).

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 16, 2010 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually see him somewhat of a LeBron James for the Buckeyes, in that he’ll put a team on his back, night in and night out, play almost any position on the court, and lead the team in every major statistic. Averaging 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists is just insane.

I agree, you’ve got to take him number 1 overall, he’s the best player in college basketball, and his competition not even close. Picking anyone else would be asinine.

by Simmsinns on Mar 16, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

A lot of people like John Wall’s upside over turner.

I agree with the lebron reference. he has that style where he will put the team on his back but his game is more like scottie pippens…granted, both pippen and lebron are both point forwards, but lebron plays a bit different and has a completely different body.

what one person said (an analysist) was that the last person to average 20 10 and 5 was larry bird. also, turner was injured and if you take away the game he got injured in the 1st quarter in, he averages 21 10 and 6.5ish.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

I heard on the radio today that the chances of making a perfect bracket is 1 in 1 billion. That’s pretty crazy.

If you're at the table and you don't see a sucker..... you're it.

by Brownie's Year on Mar 16, 2010 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

That number doesn’t sound right. That might be based on EVERY single possible outcome, which might be in the billions. But a huge chunk of those aren’t realistic. If you factor in the actual odds of favored teams, it might be closer to 1 in a million-ish. Still extremely difficult, but a still thousand times more likely.

I suck at math though, I could be wrong in everything I said above.

by Simmsinns on Mar 16, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much your second paragraph is the moral of the story here.

"Spartans never die Jorge. They're just missing in action."

by SpecialBrownie on Mar 16, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you know there are over a 100 billion different ways to completely fill out a D1 bracket?

Even if you were to able to fill out a bracket every second, it’d take you over a lifetime to fill in all combinations?

"Spartans never die Jorge. They're just missing in action."

by SpecialBrownie on Mar 16, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sorry, but you’re completely wrong. There are 64 games in the tournament, and there are 2 possible winners for each game, so there are 2^64 different combinations of brackets. That’s over 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1.8 × 10^19) combinations.

You’re right that many of those aren’t likely, of course. But even if you oversimplify and assume that there are no upsets in the entire first round (which would never happen, obviously), then there are still 31 games after that which means there are 2^31 different brackets — that’s 2,147,483,648 combinations. So, even if you filled out the bracket after the first round is done, there are still over 2 billion different brackets possible.

That’s why websites like ESPN can say they’ll give away $1 million if someone predicts a perfect bracket — it will never happen. Too many different possibilities, even if you knew everything there was to know about every team.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 16, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

2. I love being a Social Studies teacher who knew and understood the mathematical concepts of a Calc+ teacher.

"Spartans never die Jorge. They're just missing in action."

by SpecialBrownie on Mar 16, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

1. I was already self-admitted in the place Brad would have put me in. I established that with the last sentence.

2. I understand the concepts, just vastly underestimated the actual numbers, by, as Brad said, oversimplifying the favored outcomes. Though, I didn’t assume there wouldn’t be ANY upsets, just assumed you can eliminate the realistic possibility of any combinations of outcomes containing a 16 seed over a 1 seed, and so on and so forth… However, the chances are still 1 in over a billion, so I was still wrong, way off, in fact.

3. Lastly, ESPN can afford to pay the 1 million dollar prize money if they had to. I understand your point Brad, but that’s not exactly “why ESPN can offer $1 million” or Yahoo! offering 5 million. They do for the traffic resulting in ad money. I’m certain they are laws preventing them from offering an amount they couldn’t actually pay in an official contest.

by Simmsinns on Mar 16, 2010 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, of course ESPN can “afford” to pay $1 million — they’re worth much more than that. Besides, I’m sure they have some insurance policy to cover themselves in the rare case where anyone actually did get a perfect bracket. My point was that they wouldn’t offer that contest if the chance of it actually happening wasn’t very, very, very small.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 16, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Good job Brad. I was too lazy to do the math, and that sounds dead on to me. The number of combinations is a number that very few have even heard of.

If you're at the table and you don't see a sucker..... you're it.

by Brownie's Year on Mar 17, 2010 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah. they will not beat Kansas. That is where i have them losing.

I was struggling for like 20 minutes just on if they beat georgetown.

I read something that teams shoot better in similar seeded games win about 56% of the time…they are pretty much even shooting so it is statistically insignificant.

the same place said the same about defensive rebounding in march madness…both teams are even there.

Also, for all the criticism OSU gets about their bench, Georgetown’s is only a little better. granted it probably is better.

then there is the factor about fatigue. by the 2nd or third rounds, teams that go far in the conference tournament do struggle a bit more. both tOSU and G’Town went far but G’Town played 4 games in 4 days compared to the 3 in 3 for OSU. finally there is the superstar factor. the superstar that can take over the game and win a tournament (like ’Melo). Turner is that guy and he is the X factor in that game that I believe puts OSU over the top…

I have some other interesting things on there too…My bracket is a little ballsy. I have a 2 and 3 seed playing in the final 4: WVU and Baylor. I also have BYU upsetting KSU and Pitt…

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

I only read into that one game a bit.

That was one of the few games I just didn’t go with my gut…but I really wanted to have OSU in the elite 8, but also didn’t want to make a dumb pick.

I am not at all reading too much into it. I made some picks on a whim too that were against what the statistics said might happen. I went with my gut a lot with BYU and Butler.

by bross09 on Mar 17, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s never save to be ballsy, but then again, that is the whole point.

If it pays off, you’ll be one of just a tiny few who guessed it and end up in the 99% that round (final four), but if doesn’t you’ll drop swiftly.

by Simmsinns on Mar 17, 2010 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions

at the same time, when you enter it into larger pools, sometimes it is wise to have one of the ballsier picks.

I also saw a stat somewhere that said Villa has a 23% chance to make the final 4 but they are picked about 1/3 of the time. in pools with more than 10-20 people, sometimes you have to take a chance. I did with picking BYU to the elite 8. personally I think when healthy, they are one of the best teams in the country. they are playing their best b-ball right now.

But I am not being ballsy to the point of picking all sorts of upsets. you have to be ballsy but not stupid. Being safe rarely wins you a tournament pool.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 17, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally, when I’m in a pool with money involved (and I’m always in at least one) I will try to be as safe as possible by the sweet sixteen. I only really make “ballsy” picks in the first round, and usually just the occasional 11 seed upset kind of thing.

The money is made in the final four and later. If can correctly predict the final 7 winners and you’re almost guaranteed the cash. Of course that’s no easy task, by any means. Even going 6 of 7 and getting the champion right can win it all in somewhat smaller scale pools.

by Simmsinns on Mar 17, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

but safe doesn’t always win it. if you mean safe by picking the top seeds.

I personally think BYU is very underrated and are the best shooting team in the tournament. they also match well up against the 2 and 3 seed in the conference, neither of which can keep up offensively or have the offensive firepower to keep up.

Pitt is one of those teams though that limits posessions by their slow pace but is not an incredible defense. they also have a solid but unspectacular defense. in close games, you need to have clutch shooting and be able to grab rebounds off of misses. BYU is better than Pitt at both of these.

the point is, that oftentimes it is sometimes a better idea to go with “ballsier” picks but not truly risky picks. Honestly, I like BYU and was watching Joe Linardi (or whatever his name is) and he seems to agree with me on BYU. IN a bigger bracket, everyone will be picking the 1 or two seeds and sometimes to separate you need to pick one “ballsy” pick.

Like in the regional held in houston, most teams will be picking Duke or Villanova to make the Final 4. However, in a larger pool this always isn’t a smart move if you want to separate.

Villanova is picked by about 32% of people to go to the Final 4 but their chances of making it are 23%…so this is statistically a bad pick in larger pools

Duke is picked by about 42% of people to make the final 4, but their chances are only 37%.

I like baylor anyways. Baylor’s statistical chances of making the final 4 are about 16% but only about 5-6 % of people are picking baylor…mostly b/c they are unknown.

With BYU, their chances of making it to the elite 8 are about 20.4%, However, they are only picked by about 5% of people on most online sources…

So it is actually SMART in larger polls, like one of the ones I am entering, to pick a team like Baylor to make the Final 4, or BYU to the elite 8.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 17, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

also, I have BYU upsetting Kansas State. Most people are picking against BYU because with that kind of difference, they usually pick seedwise. BYU is picked to win about 25% of the time, but their chances of winning are about 42%. the chances statistically for Kansas state to win in the 2nd are 58%…this doesn’t include how teams matchup and BYU can give KSU fits.

Nah, they have the choice between an uninterrupted feed and the main CBS feed for local games. According to the listings, they were supposed to have the uninterrupted feed. They just screwed up. That’s why when they did switch back to the game, it wasn’t Greg Gumble sending us back to the OU game. They piggybacked the constant feed for the game over CBS’ main feed (which is why the signal kept breaking up — they were broadcasting two HD feeds through the bandwidth that you’d normally push one).

On another note, I’m glad Kansas lost, even though i had them winning it all, this tournament has been defined by overseeded teams getting their comeuppance (I’m a Louisville Cardinal, Big East fan by the way). Unfortunately i don’t think it will have a real effect on seeding or anything else. Cornell playing Temple in the first round was stupid. Personally I think those were two legit sweet sixteen teams that got placed opposite each other because they weren’t from a big conference.

I totally agree. Temple could have beaten a lot of teams that were seeded higher (or at least a good few).

I had kansas winning it all but I was watching it and I was secretly rooting for UNI. not just because of the story but it is always nice to see the big fall.

I know you are a big east fan and the big east is truly a great conference for basketball. however, I did not feel this was a strong Big east when you compared it to previous yeas. I thought villanova was way overseeded, ND didn’t really deserve a bid IMO (especially since kent state didn’t get one), and I thought G’Town was a bit overrated too. I do sorta like syracuse though and I have always liked rick pitino as a coach.

besides these two teams, I am not a fan of the big east. In some ways, it pleased me a little as an OSU fan to see the big east struggle. now I would normally not root for something like this, but it is more to shove it in the media’s face. if the media didn’t love the big east like they love tim tebow, I would probably be indifferent to the conference as a whole. however, how the big east is constantly overrated recently in the media does annoy me. I like overseeded teams getting their comeuppance and I thought a few were big east teams. I was also happy kansas fell, and was rooting for KSU to fall too.

I am torn about cornell. i like the school and I want them to do well, however I am a big 10 homer and I want to see the big 10 do well b/c I think they were very underrated by critics this year. I think I heard a stat that either 11 or 13 out of the 32 that made it past the first round were midmajors. this is the kind of tourney I like to see. small schools getting their due. I am just upset BYU lost.

I just got back from Vegas — almost won $400 in a 4-team parlay until Texas A&M blew their lead to Purdue and lost in OT. But I’ve got $100 on OSU to win it all at 9/1 odds so if that happens I’ll be happy for multiple reasons.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 24, 2010 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I thought so. That’s why I put some money on them. And I got those odds on Sunday morning, after Kansas lost — I thought for sure they’d be lower with the #1 seed out of the region. After OSU won on Sunday the odds dropped to 8/1, but they’re still behind Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke, and West Virginia. I think OSU has a much easier path to the Final Four than any of those teams.

by Simmsinns on Mar 24, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I think OSU has a much easier path to the Final Four than any of those teams.

I’m forced to agree. But I still wonder about the train of thought behind that. Of course, it’s mostly due to the lower seeds left in our region, as well as a favorable match-up in the next highest seed, Michigan St. But: 1. The Northern Iowa threat could be very real. 2. If they are still just a lucky 9 seed, I can’t help but think if that team beat Kansas, we were fully capable of beating Kansas. (Then again, I’ve always thought this, and had the belief reinforced after the first Lehigh game.)

We were the lowest overall 2 seed coming in to this tournament, thus placed with the highest 1 seed. We go from that, to the easiest path to the Final Four. Perhaps what it comes down to is just everyone (including many Buckeye fans) getting it wrong. I’m not even sure if I’m getting my point across. I just think it’s a little unfair to the Buckeye basketball team, if they make it to the Final Four, to write them off, or even just assume they made it because their work “was done for them” in UNI upsetting KU, and Ohio upsetting Gtown. We’re still going to have to beat the team that knocked of the “best” team in the tourny, or beat the team that beat that team. They better team that night advanced and Kansas, being a season veteran squad, knew going in this tournament can be that way. You’ve got to be fully prepared for that.

If we make it past Tennessee (who’s no pushover themselves), we will play the second best team from the Mid West bracket in the regional finals.

Lastly, one might say, “Well, Kansas is still better” because “Kansas still wins 9 out of 10.” Well, Kansas knows they don’t play 10 games. That alone makes that argument moot. It really doesn’t matter, you prepare and play to win that night, or lose and go home. Every team knows those are the rules. And it’s very possible that series goes down to the wire as well. Based on what we’ve seen from KU vs. UNI, we have no reason to believe otherwise.

Ok, I’m just rambling at this point. Am I making any sense here?
This isn’t really directed at anyone in particular, just kind of venting.

I’m not a Buckeye fan, but the only 2 I felt had an argument to be ahead of OSU, was WVU. If any team should have been with Kansas it should have been Nova.

I think Duke has the easiest trip, Syracuse the hardest, and UK the trickiest with Cornell and possibly a better than expected Washington or a WVU (albeit missing Bryant).

I would put OSU 2nd hardest because of the potential matchup against MSU and who knows what they could face in NI.

Also, although Tenn has been prone to underperformance they have proven capable of beating quality teams this year (UK, Kansas, though both were at home).
