Looks like we are taking a closer look at Tebow. Holmgren and Mangini were at his Pro Day. Seeing how hard of a worker and how strong of a leader he is would make me excited for any other athlete, but since it's Tebow...I dont know if I like this.

I will say that I think it is just due diligence which they are probably doing on almost every potential qB selection. Only one of them will get media attention though.

I agree. Vince Young had one great season. Tebow’s worst season – last one – is on par with that one, passing-wise at least. Arguably it’s better – 5 fewer touchdowns, yes, but also 5 fewer interceptions, 2.6 percent better completion percentage, and quarterback rating was slightly higher. And Young’s best season isn’t close to Tebow’s first season and it’s not as good as Tebow’s second, either.

by Matt Y. on Mar 20, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Production does not always equal ability. I can guarantee you that Tim Tebow will not be the 3rd pick in the draft. Furthermore, I’ve never seen Tebow single-handedly win a game for his team like Young did multiple times. When Tebow lost Percy Harvin, the Gator offense lost all steam.

by gahnki on Mar 20, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention that Young carried the Longhorns over USC, a team that ESPN said was the greatest ever.

In his 20-game college career, he ran for 3,362 yards, caught 14 passes for 253 yards and completed 40-of-82 passes for 575 yards. Of his 31 touchdowns, 16 were from at least 20 yards, with nine from more than 50 yards.4 He scored at least one touchdown in every game he played but one, a 1925 loss to Nebraska. He earned All-America recognition three consecutive years

Tebow deserves to be in the convo with Griffin and Hershel and Thorpe and Bednarik. Just statistically dominant, got a Heisman and two rings. Completely expanded the scope of his position (SEC record rushing touchdowns?)

Got robbed a little bit in the Heisman vote this year, he could have easily won if that SEC title game wasn’t so huge and so visible.

I’m an OSU homer but guys don’t hate on Tebow’s college career. A couple years ago I was the kind of person who was bashing him somewhat but someone set me straight. They said “what you say he sucks but why? because he didn’t go to ohio state?” Got me thinking.

Give the guy his props. He had a stellar career at Florida and was a big part of the revitalization of that program (Ron Zook had them practically out of the picture.) Statistically and character-wise Tebow deserves to be in the conversation with anybody for “greatest college football player”

by bross09 on Mar 20, 2010 3:14 AM EDT up reply actions

This is why I don’t like Tebow:

1. I am an Ohio State fan. He was good and he beat my team. It is the same reason I don’t like USC.

2. The media worship of him. I believe it was Thom Breneman who said during a game that “if you spend 15 minutes with Tim Tebow, you are a better person for it”. Verne Lundquist spent four years day dreaming about how just totally awesome he was.

3. My personal belief that he was overrated. Everywhere Meyer has gone, he has turned a QB into a great player. Chris Leak had his best season under Meyer. Same goes for Alex Smith. You can go back to Omar Jacobs at Bowling Green. Meyer may be a douche, but the man can coach college. Add in the fact that Tebow is surrounded by more talent than any QB in the country, shouldn’t he be dominating?

4. I think the rah-rah crap is ridiculous. He gets personal fouls for not controlling his emotions. This wouldn’t be such a huge point if he was a DE, but he is a QB. He is supposed to be composed and calm no matter the situation. Do you see Brady getting personal fouls? Manning? But Tebow is somehow applauded for this. His freshman season, during the title game, he would always clap in another players face when he got up. I think that is a jackass move, you are not “taunting” but in all reality, you are.

And if people think that veterans are going to play harder and give “their all” because Tebow walks into that locker room, I got news for you, you’re an idiot. If Tebow shows that he belongs in this league and can make a difference on the field, then the vets on the team will pay him some attention, but not a moment before.

Granted, some of this is no fault of Tebow. Some of these aren’t even good reasons, but they are mine, It should go without saying, but if he is drafted by the Browns I will be hoping and praying that he will turn into one of the greatest QB’s of all time. If he is drafted by the Steelers, I hope he gets abducted by Aliens.

I totally agree with you. I am an ohio state fan but even if I try to take the fanhood out of me, I still don’t like him.

I don’t like him for the next 3 reasons…and I totally agree with what meyer does.

Its also like how people talk about his off the field stuff and then talk about how he is such an amazing player. the 2 have no connection but everyone insists that they do. just because he gives circumcisions to african kids, the media thinks he will win a super bowl.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 20, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

When you sit back and take a look at what the guy has accomplished, his toughness, his personality, i dont understand the bashing. But, then college fans are very passionate. His game has been picked apart more than any other player and I’m not saying anything about where he should be selected in the draft. But, he is a class act, a hard worker, physically talented, coachable, and a team player. What’s not to like? Round 2 or 3 of course.

by rockybrown on Mar 20, 2010 12:03 AM EDT reply actions

My question is:

What does personality, mental toughness, and being a class act have to do with being a great player?

Oh, because he gave circumcisions in a 3rd world country, he should be considered the best college player of all time?

If you look at his production, his leadership on the team, and his body of work, yes he definitely could make the top 10…maybe the top 5 in some peoples minds, but I would not say best college player of all time. it seems like you are putting emphasis a lot on his personality.

Is michael vick any worse of a player (besides sitting out of football) because he had dogfighting rings and should his accomplishments be diminished?

Is Jared Allen terrible because he got a few DUIs?

Is tiger woods a sucky golf player because he had affairs?

Is Michael Phelps not a great olympian because he got caught smoking Pot?

The answer to all of these IMO is No. In the same sense:

Should Tebow be considered greater than he is as a player because he does a lot of charity work?

Again No. the same logic applies.

2/5 are incorrect. As far as NFL players go, he’s not physically talented. He has an average arm, decent size, and slightly above average speed for a qb. He will not be running around or through linebackers in the NFL like he did in college.

as far as him being a class act, I don’t care what he did off the field, the guy’s an ashole on the field. everything from taunting to excessive celebration. I don’t care how much charity work he does, the guy’s a dick.

also, most people here know this by now but i’m not sure if you do. I don’t care about college football.

in addition, his game has been picked apart with good reason. it doesn’t translate to the NFL. As someone else said, he basically has to relearn the fundamentals of football while also trying to adjust to the NFL. maybe he can do, but I’m betting he can’t.

A lot goes on the field that people do not see. The media has their cameras focused on Tebow all the time which is the only difference in our perception of him in relation to other players.

by gahnki on Mar 21, 2010 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

He is a team player and he is talented. 6’3 240 is fantastic size for a QB. Like Ben Roethlisberger. His arm is above average, but yeah not off the charts. And he is above average speed for an NFL qb, especially one as big as him. His lateral mobility is elite though. His 6.66 (irony?) on the 3 cone is faster than some wide receivers.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 21, 2010 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep. that is the selling point for me. He is talented, athletic AND he has fantastic size. he must be a great QB.

is it the same for QBs who are non-athletic and are 6’0 210?

You hear that Drew Brees? I think Jaws thinks tebow is better than you because Tebow is a fullback.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 22, 2010 2:49 AM EDT up reply actions

His measureables are good, his college production is good, and his intangibles are great. I’m only pointing out that there are a lot of reasons to think he will have success. There were more reasons to think Brees would struggle in the NFL when he was coming out of college and he still went at the top of the second round. Tebow could present a good value.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 24, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

define intangibles: if it is work ethic and character, yes they are pretty good.

If it is his decision making, yes it is decent

If it is his pocket presence it is good

If it is things like going through his progressions, knowing when to pass and when to run, reading a defense, etc…I would say his intangibles are meiocre.

There were less reasons to think brees wouldn’t be successful. he was small, and had a weak arm, but delivered the ball on target, went through his progressions well, had very good decision making, etc.

jaws, what matters more for a QB, his speed and lateral mobility? or his accuracy, ability to read a defense, and progressions? I say the latter group matters much more to be an NFL QB.

if you think otherwise I guess we have a very different view of evaluating QBs.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 24, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

You are getting awfully b*&chy on here lately bross! I think all that Jaws is saying is the fact that those physical features and athleticism gives him the potential to be a good QB. I didn’t read anything that he wrote that said he would be a “great QB”? Nor did anyone compare him to Brees except for you.

Drew brees however in many ways (but not all) is the anti-Tebow (at least in skills).

how much do physical features and athleticism matter as a QB if you can’t read a defense or go through your progressions.

Tebow does have some skills but things like this are overhyped at times with a QB. did it help juice williams? These things are nice, and I am not saying he has potential, but most people think because he can run a 4.66 40 (or whatever) and he Wins, that he is a stud, or even that he is signficantly better than a lefevour or a McCoy.

I get where your coming from, but just be careful not to think that everyone thinks he will be some great, HOF type QB. Many people like the kid b/c of his potential. No one (in their right mind anyways) thinks he has all the tools yet. I guess I’m just saying don’t think that everyone believes that. Maybe jaws does, but I don’t think so. I think he was just sayin that the kid does have some potential to be a good QB in the league.
