I Still Think The Browns Need A Veteran WR

Heckert said in a press conference a while back that he was happy where we stand at WR and didn't consider the position a priority.  I hope he is playing things close to the vest, or has something up his sleeve, because the WR position is lacking in my opinion.

We Have Mo Mass, who while coming into his own after the B.E. trade is still wet behind the ears.  Robo had a hard time getting on the field but looked like things were starting to click in the last couple of games.  Stucki is promising, but once again, young and inexperienced.  Furrey has not been resigned and played more on defense than offense at the end of the season.  I know nothing about the guy we signed off of Green Bay's practice squad in November.

Last year David Patten was the veteran brought in to mentor the young guys.  Before that, this presence was Joe Jurevicious.  I'd really like to see a veteran wideout added to the roster, but unlike Patten, one that could really push the younger guys for playing time.  The other aspect of this type of player is someone that shows the young guys how to prepare and be a good teammate.  This would probably eliminate the biggest name left out there, T.O.  He's been on his best behavior for two seasons now, but I don't see him being the mentoring type.

After Jake Delhomme was signed Mushin Muhammed seemed like a logical choice for this role, but I'm not familiar enough to say whether he has anything left in the tank at 37 years old.

Here's a link to all the free agent WR's.  Most any of the real attractive names have been resigned or scooped up already.

yep. david patten did a lot for us last year…

Torry Holt didn’t do a whole lot on a team that was desperate for someone to catch the ball last year. He fits the profile for sure, but last years numbers kinda scare me away.

I believe if B.E. would have been traded before the end of camp, Patten could have played a role on the team.

Also, I realize that Holt had slightly better numbers than Muhammed last season, but the chemistry between Muhammed and Delhomme makes him a better fit in my opinion.

yeah. that wouldn’t be a bad idea.

That may be true about patten. however you cannot say he is a veteran to be brought in b/c he didn’t make the team.

Apparently Patten still has some value, the Patriots signed him a couple of weeks ago. In hindsight, I wish he would have made the team last year. I keep going over that free agent list and can’t find what I’m looking for. 6’ or taller, at least 5 years starting experience, good speed. I hate to say it but T.O. might be a good option for a one year contract.

NO. you really think he could be a mentor?

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Mar 19, 2010 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

No. That’s the only trepidation with him. He’s got the numbers, but not the intangibles. What I’m saying is there seems to be no wide receiver in the free agent class that fits our needs. Veteran, good enough play to push the young guys for a starting position, size and speed and a head on their shoulders to mentor our young WR corps. So if you are going to make a compromise what is it? You can get the receiver you want, but not the mentor, or you can get the mentor but he may just eat up a roster spot because his skills can’t surpass one of our young guys. Maybe using a draft pick for a trade is a better option.

I really think this is a huge need on the current roster. The QB play has been atrocious for sure, but look at the receiving options. B.E. had stone for hands and in his head, and the rest of the WRs’ are young and inexperienced. Robert Royal had issues with his hands and Heiden was obviously never close with his knee. I’m afraid that whoever the QB is this season is set up to fail without that veteran receiver on the field to draw some attention.

Please utilize the reply button. It was obvious who you were talking to here, but it can get really confusing in other cases.

you mean tory holt?

Mushin Muhammad?

I would say these guys can be mentors AND they can put up stats. Muhammas got about 600 yards with some pedestrian QB play…not too shabby.

I don’t think we need a veteran WR. I hope we have enough offensive minds and experience in Berea now that we don’t need to add anyone to act as a coach. If someone who can contribute were to come along for the right price, fine, why not. Otherwise, we are not in “win now” mode, so it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to cut a fat check for one guy to marginally upgrade the position.

I’ll pass on Moose.

This. I’d prefer to trust the coaching staff as well right now. Get our young WRs some game experience while being coached up. That’s what will make this a good team in a year or two. Holmgren brings a lot of knowledge that can make these WRs better quickly. He and mangini are exactly what these young guys need.

by Dawg Nuts on Mar 19, 2010 10:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Its true, It’ll be nice to be able to get MoMass, Robo, and Stuckey to see the field more. A veteran just cuts in on their playing time. Still hopeing the browns find a good value WR in the draft, though.

I agree about adding one more young WR if the value is right in the draft. Even if Robi and Stuckey play up to their talent, they are not dominant #1 WRs that make defenses adjust to them. I don’t mind if we never get one of those guys, but in that case it would be nice to have four WRs who are all legit threats, a la NYG.

Yeah, I definitely agree. The guy I like is Andre Roberts as I have said a few times. Definitely could be there early in the third. Not a dominant guy but definitely could be a really nice effective receiver, especially in the slot.

It always seems like you talk about only a few players or only one at a position. while you need to be flexible in the draft, I totally agree on this point that Roberts is great.

I agree. there is really only one guy I would go after…and it is moose. I don’t think we need to, but this is the only guy I would want the browns to go after if they decide to go after a veteran WR.

we should have signed kevin walter before he resigned with houston

by brownsMania on Mar 19, 2010 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

I think we tried. His intent was to re-sign with the Texans.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 19, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

At this point I would not mind T.O., but I’m not sure Heckert would be on board, given his past experience with T.O.

by OSUMoneyball on Mar 19, 2010 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

NO. He doesn’t have much left physically or production wise to risk the locker room distractions. you notice how we don’t hear rumors about anyone wanting to pick him up? I wonder why that is!

maybe we bring back

Joe Jurevicous!!! Reggie Rucker, Brian Brennan or Dave Logan even at their current age over T.O.!!!!!

Isaac Bruce? I love him. I think he only got a one year contract from the 49ers in 2009.

by mooncamping on Mar 20, 2010 9:16 AM EDT reply actions

i always liked him too. wonder if he has anything left in the tank though?

by Dawg Nuts on Mar 20, 2010 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Receivers have pretty good joints in the long run, I think. If he´s not physically degenerated, he´s still fast and skilled. And I think he´s positively nuts for football.

by mooncamping on Mar 21, 2010 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Even before we picked up Delhomme, I wanted Mushin Muhammed for a year. I wonder what it would cost to pry him loose.

I would rather let Mass, Robiskie, Stuckey develop on their own. I dont want some veteran restricting their development. I still have mental scars from Jamal Lewis holding back Jerome Harrison last year. Lets stick with the young guys, find 4-5 viable players thru the draft each year and build this team from the ground up. BTW, listening to Holmgren’s last press conference, he mentioned he wanted a burner in the draft at WR. Then, I read that the Browns had an individual workout with Jacoby Ford at Clemson’s pro day. If he wants a speedster, this would be the guy.

by rockybrown on Mar 20, 2010 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

And really, I think that a speedster would help MoMass and Robo more than a traditional #1 type receiver. I know nothing of Jacoby Ford, but if he’s fast and can catch and he can be had in the third round or later, I’m all for it.

Ford was one of the best WRs at Clemson this year. The guy can run.

by emily522 on Mar 20, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He is ridiculously fast. The route running and catching stuff, not as sure.

I agree that a quick slot guy could help the team a lot. I think anyone that defenses are worried about would help. Watson should actually be able to make a big impact if we let him in our offense. I am not saying he becomes Brent Jones, but someone to threaten the middle of the field should do a lot for us.

He had 56 receptions last year, so he at least has some ability to catch the ball. The only thing I wonder about is, how many of those catches were bubble screens and quick outs?

by gahnki on Mar 20, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Just need guys who can get open and hang on to the ball. I’m not a huge fan of Ford, he isn’t very polished. But he could be a nice option in the 5th or something.
