How Long Before Our Brownies Are in PlayOff Contention?
I am aware that this is a very speculative post and this could go in a trillion different directions, however I'm just curious what people think now that a legite and proven front office is in place.
I personally believe that we go somewhere in the 8-8 range next season and the front office gets to know our needs and strengths even better. Then (considering there is a season in 2011) I see us making a legitimate run for the playoffs.
what do you think?

I think thats a bit optimistic. Don’t get me wrong, I see improvement this year, and a little more the year after, then we can talk playoffs.

sorry can’t help but be optimistic. I haven’t been this excited for the next season since…ohhhh 1999. Between Holmgren, Heckert, Mangini, and Haskill coaching up Daboll, I am loving what I see from them right now
I don’t blame you for being that optimistic. I applaud it. I just think its too soon.

i’m not ready to make any firm predictions until i see our final roster for the season. but a very early preliminary prediction is 6-10.
Didn’t someone on here say that Lerner is only giving Holmgren 3 years to become contenders?
If you're at the table and you don't see a sucker..... you're it.
That’s probably true. I was just asking because I thought I saw it on here. I don’t know anything about that "3 years" thing and hoped someone would enlighten me. Thanks for clarifying bro.

It actually was on here, but it was a Cleveland.com commenter.

Things change fast in the NFL. We could be in the playoff hunt this year, 9-7 or 10-6 is absolutely not out of the question, and a record like that could win our division, given the tough competition. If the Browns rise up to respectability, there will be no weak link in the AFC north.

The Steelers could be the weak link. They Suck.

I’d be overjoyed with 8 – 8 next year.
Playoffs are probably 2 or 3 years away simply because of the division we play in. The Steelers and Ravens front offices are rock solid so it’s unlikely either takes a huge nosedive and the Bengals look like they actually put together a pretty good group too. 8 wins next year would be a huge, huge accomplishment. For that to happen we would need to strike gold in the draft and get much improved QB play. How sweet would it be if Brady made huge strides this year and eliminated the need to take another QB high?
Of course until the draft and free agency are over we don’t really know squat but it’s fun to talk about.
I am kind of in this camp.
The only things that give me hope are:
-Baltimore finally showing signs of age on D (because they would be a much worse team if Suggs, Reed and/or Ray were retired or two steps slower).
-pittsburgh maybe being confused about their team’s structure and overall philosophy (Are they the classic run and play D team? Are they building around Ben to become the Colts/Saints?)
-And Cincy being Cincy.
I do think we are 2 or 3 seasons away from being a threat to go 10-6 again, depending on what the final roster looks like of course.

It all depends on the QB position. I’m thinking brady is the guy, its just irresponsible to draft another QB or make a trade for one when Brady Quinn still might have some upside and comes at the low low price of free. If Brady can sort himself out and have a breakout year, the browns could be contenders this year. If he continues to be a whole lot of mediocre, they are 2 years away almost certainly.
"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."
He doesn’t come up the low, low cost of free. If there’s not good reason to believe he can improve dramatically (and this is a front office call, not something we can determine), then the cost of gambling is another season of failure without reasonable hope. Lerner is well aware of how costly that could be, even strictly financially.
Brady Quinn will never be a good quarterback for the Browns.
its just irresponsible to draft another QB or make a trade for one when Brady Quinn still might have some upside
Could not disagree more with this statement.
the point is that this year just isn’t the year to look for a QB. there are no free agents or veterans worth the cost, and the draft is pretty thin at QB. Meanwhile we have a bunch of money tied up with the QB position already and so many team needs that it would be dumb to use a draft pick on another QB.
The Browns are much better off trying to fill their numerous other needs with the draft this year, and seeing once and for all if brady quinn can be the guy. If he doesn’t work out we got another pick in the top half of the draft next year.
"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."
This is only true if the evaluators feel that none of the available QBs are worth the long-term nivestment. If Holmgren finds a guy that he thinks has long-term top 10 QB in the league potential, that get him, Brady Quinn be damned.
I don’t think you can ever have too many good QBs. I am not sold on Quinn, I don’t think it is out of the question that he develops into a good QB. If we had another kid who had top-10 QB potential, awesome.

This is very early to predict. Probably in two months we will be able to get a better idea. 11 draft picks, Free agents that could join the team. Add Thomas Jones would have to help, so who knows.
This team is finally heading in the right direction, I could see a 9-7 and I can see 7-9.
I will sell high and go 10-6, I am a half full guy.
With as much in flux as we have here right now, I can’t imagine predicting next season’s record.

My philosophy is that everyone’s in playoff contention every year until they are mathematically eliminated. It’s the NFL – wacky things happen. Did anyone really believe that the Browns would go 10-6 a couple of years ago and be within a couple Derek Anderson interceptions against Cinci and a total Indianapolis lie-down of getting a playoff spot?

wow.
why so long?
We had the talent this year to win 7 games at least IMO, we just had to sort out our personnel issues. Now that we have an identity, I think .500 is a very attainable goal for the 2010 season, with anything short of the playoffs being a disappointment in 2011.
he was injured. injured bad.
Barring FA acquisitions, we’ll be heading into next year with two rookie DBs (or one and Brandon McDonald, which is worse), two second year WRs, we’ll be relying on guys like Rubin and Schaeffering to play up to their potential, we’ll have who knows what at QB, and we’ll be leaning heavily on a group of running backs who are anything but proven. And chances are pretty slim that we have Oakland, KC, and a floundering Jacksonville team back to back to back at the end of the season to pad our record.
I think we’re still on the schedule Mangini set when he drafted two wideouts in the second round. 2011 will be year three for those wideouts and, I think, the first year we can expect to be competetive week in and week out.
We’re a four to six win team this year.

browns are forever
being a 28 yr cleveland native now living in santa fe new mexico, i am a faithful clevelander. browns, indians, and the cavs are always tops in my eyes. with holgrem in charge we can expect to see some definate improvment in some if not most areas both offensive and defensive. we migth not make the playoffs but we are an up and coming threat to the rest of the afc north. with anderson gone and cribbs resigned (thank the gods) we will be better off for it. go browns!!!

just a little tip for future posts, we don’t really bother with the subject line here, it doesn’t really serve much of a purpose.

6-10 for me, steady progress. Holmegren is only adding at the moment, hasn’t dismantled anything from Mangini’s year (can’t call it an era can we) and the Crennel era is pretty much done with in terms of structure.
2/3 seasons we’ll be in the playoffs but with an 11-5 sort of record. You won’t go 14-2 in our division, but it makes you tough…

I may be putting too much into this, but with uncapped free agency I don’t see the Browns being able to make the playoffs too often. If you look at the Indians, they get their draft, and develop them and by the time they have amounted to anything, their contracts are up and we can’t resign them. The Indians have a small window in which they can be successful. Hopefully this won’t be the case with the Browns, but uncapped free agency, in my opinion, is one of the biggest obstacles the Browns will face in making runs for the playoffs.
