The Browns have traded Corey Williams to the Detroit Lions.

Deal is Lions get Williams and a 7th round pick from the Browns. In return the Browns will get the Lions 5th rounder, a pick the Lions got from Denver in a draft day trade last season.

Williams was going to be cut next week if he wasn't traded.

Corey Williams traded for me is like when golanbtrac heard Mangini was being retained.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 4, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Agree. Sunk costs. Another Phil Savage disaster — trade away our 2nd round pick (when we already traded our 1st and 3rd rounders) for a guy who never played in a 3-4. Genius. I think Savage saw that GB franchised him and just thought, he must be really good, a “franchise” player.

by TheDriveStillHurts on Mar 5, 2010 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed. Williams didn’t do crap for us.

by emily522 on Mar 5, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Also!

Antrell Rolle is a supposed Bears “lean” (to borrow a recruiting term).

Mort is also reporting that the Browns are calling around using their 12 draft picks as trade ammo.

I think we may have a QB by dawn fellas.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 4, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

That would be tremendous. I am liking the activity. I will give it the weekend though.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 4, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

They sure didn’t waste anytime sending Williams packing huh?

I wonder if this trade may get us Berry. Maybe the Lions take a pass on one of the DT’s and go in a direction of greater need? Maybe OT?

I doubt the Lions pick Berry, they took Delmas last season and he was very good.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 4, 2010 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree. I was not worried about him going to detroit. I am most worried now about KC. I don’t think a DT will go #1 when it comes down to it.

If you are right that they don’t go DT, that means either Suh or McCoy will last till #6
1: QB
2: not DT (if you are going to be correct)
3: DT
4: Definitely No DT, possibly OT (redskins)
5: I don’t think DT, drafted DT first round last 2 rounds. this is where I worry b/c if more OTs go early, they might go Berry
6: I think that the seahawks will go QB but with either Suh or McCoy on the board it might change.
7: if one of the DTs is still on the board, we could trade down and the pick may be overvalued just b/c who will b there.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

Even though, Williams and Suh in the middle is nasty.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

yeah. it would be. I read a source on ESPN that said if both DTs are on the board, this means they will more likely take Suh.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

they made the trade specifically so that they could take suh over McCoy since they are starting to think the rams will take bradford. Williams and McCoy both are naturally suited for the so-called ‘weak tackle’ or 3-tech. Suh is much stronger and has a game based on power more than quickness, he fits perfectly as a strong tackle. I think the lions want to come away from the offseason with Vanden Bosch, Williams and Suh. Jim Schwartz feels like a kid on christmas morning.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

If the Lions come away with those three, their offseason went really well.

Their defense should turn around quickly. Ernie Sims has to be the happiest person in Detroit.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 12:49 AM EST up reply actions

the lions will draft suh and he will draw the double team, allowing Corey Williams a one on one matchup almost every time.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

That was the same theory that was given here when we traded for Rogers.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

There is an article on the ESPN Rumors page talking about this, and the more I think of the situation, I think it is more possible. After getting Williams and Vanden Bosch, drafting Suh or McCoy doesn’t make sense. If they did that they would be spending about $20 Million on the defensive line, and have invested $0 in protecting their $13 million Quarterback.

by OSUMoneyball on Mar 5, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Also!

I am not a Delhomme fan by many means.

Tim Hasselbeck, of ESPN, just told me that Delhomme would be a great fit in Cleveland.

Hence, I learned Hasselbeck is a dumbass.

I guess the FO really wanted to get rid of him eh? This trade just clears some money for us.

Probably the only Cleveland Browns fan in all of Sydney, NSW.

by skipkirk on Mar 4, 2010 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

If it was to clear some money, that means the Browns just saved about 6 million dollars, and I heard today that Peppers was wanting about 13 million. So maybe the Browns might make a run at Peppers since they just cleared some money, and opened up the position.

*Note: My 6 million dollar figure comes from Williams 6 year 38 million contract, just did some simple math and rounding, I didn’t actually look up his actuall yearly salary.

by OSUMoneyball on Mar 4, 2010 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I think this was a move to spend some money elsewhere.

Mort is now saying that the pick we got could be a 5th. Stay tuned.

If it is a 5th round pick, I think that may bring Troy Smith into play, who was tendered for his original 5th round pick. Just another crazy theory of mine.

I have to admit, I’ve always liked Troy Smith. I’m not entirely certain how he would do as a Brown, but for a fifth round pick, he may not be that bad of a gamble. And, all in all, if he doesnt work out, he’s still a better quarterback than Ratliff.

by Dusty W on Mar 5, 2010 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Ha.

In all honesty, if Richard Bartel made the team instead of Ratliff, I’d have probably produced Madden related proof that he should lead the team.

Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reports that the Browns dealt Williams before his 1.7 million bonus came due next week.

Sounds like it was a trade or cut situation. Glad we got something. Chargers got nothing for Jamal Williams this afternoon.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

According to OBR, Williams was getting cut if we did not get anything back in trade for him.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 9:04 AM EST up reply actions

I believe this. Detroit just paid a 5th/6th to cut in front of the free agency line.

Brady Quinn will never be a good quarterback for the Browns.

by danvail on Mar 5, 2010 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

paid a 5th/6th and they are paying more now than he would have received on the free agent market.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe in salary but they also get a shorter length contract and relatively small “signing” bonus of $2M.

Brady Quinn will never be a good quarterback for the Browns.

I’m very interested in Dunta Robinson if he isn’t too pricey.

With all of their draft picks and Shaun Rodgers, the Browns could be a great trade partner to get Nnamdi Asomugha and re-unite him with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Personally I love the idea, especially since we have the deep pocketed ownership to absorb his huge contract.

I think the browns should solve CB outside of the draft so we can use our second pick on a LB

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

By the way, no one talked about this during the whole thing about tendering guys:

we did not put any sort of tender on brodney pool. this makes him a UFA. I personally am not surprised at all.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 12:25 AM EST reply actions

Makes it even more important that we get a safety.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

Ever since that last concussion, I have considered it a foregone conclusion that he would be gone. whenever I thought about our safety position, whether in the draft or Free Agency, I did not consider pool as on the team.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe we go after Astowege(spelling???) From the Rams. Tendered the lowest level and is a very solid Safety when healthy. Lets not count out Rhodes either.

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 4:07 AM EST up reply actions

I agree. Atogwe is IMO one of their best players on defense. If it is a low tender, hell yes. He is more than a solid player, he is a darn good player. with him at Free and Elam at Strong, i feel we have a more than solid safety corps, but not much depth.

I understand he was injured this year, but it is not like he is boldin and has serious injury issues. Since his rookie year (where he only got on the field for 12 games and was healthy) he has missed 4 total games in 4 years…all this year. while you have to worry about this year, for a guy who produces like he does, that tender is a steal even with any sort of injury.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

by the way though, i heard Atogwe might be going to seattle.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

I really need to get some sort of new phone soon. I had a new one about a year ago but it broke and before getting it, my family stopped the insurance policy. while this sounds dumb, it was like 6 dollars a month and then you still had to pay 50-100 dollars to get a new phone…

anyways, I am eligible for a free one in the summer. until them I am stuck with the worst phone in history. Here are some of the things it does.

Doesn’t turn on sometimes
randomly drops calls
Randomly in conversations it will disconnect and I can’t here what is going on. it will eventually reconnect but the time lapse varies.
Sometimes the buttons don’t work so I have to take out the battery
worst (IMO) is that sometimes I will be talking on the phone and the phone just TURNS OFF.

Filed under “could effect the Browns draft”:

Jason Cole is reporting that the Redskins will have OT Chad Clifton in for a visit on Friday.

Considering we were pegging the Skins as a potential landing spot for EB, if the Skins sign Clifton, they may be out of the OT running.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 1:38 AM EST reply actions

Nah that just means they are looking at Drafting a QB, hard. Leaving the seahawks as a potential Berry landing spot. If you ask me, we should definitely be willing to move up (the chiefs would be willing to swap) to get berry. The kid is solid.

It all depends on what else we can add between now and the draft, however the fact is that Haden is a definite consolation prize. Berry and Suh are the best players in the draft. I like berry enough to give the chiefs a 3rd or 4th pick to move ahead of the seahawks. The chiefs will be glad to make a deal, they want an OT and will be able to get Okung or Davis at #7 and pay them less than the #5 slot. Berry is my guy.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 2:17 AM EST up reply actions

yeah. who will pay attention to burleson when they have to cover megatron.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 2:36 AM EST up reply actions

Here are the numbers for Burelson: 5 years for 25 million with 11 million guaranteed.

A lot of money for 63 catches and 812 yards.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

it is a lot of money…but didn’t we pay stallworth more than that?? Not that we shoulc compare any deal to that.

but also consider this:

burleson only played 13 games. he was injured for the last few games of the season. translate that per game and its about 4.8 catches a game and 62-63 yards. translated over a 16 game season and he would have gotten 77 catches for about 1000 yards.

Burleson will be covered much less. In seattle he WAS the #1 option. TJ has always been more of a #2/slot receiver. Burleson consistently went up against the teams best corner. in Detroit, he will not get the kind of coverage that he got in seattle.

while seattle passed more than the lions did this year (and for more yards) I feel that the teams are on a trend to switch that. with stafford healthy all year (possibly) and him in his 2nd season, I think they will get less conservative. However, in seattle I doubt that hasselbeck is back. it is likely that the starter is either clausen or bradford. that means a conservative offense, at least for this year.

my point is, that Burleson could put up even better numbers in detroit. he is just reaching his prime and with detroit being a better fit, he could shine. They were in desperate need of a #2. IMO, burleson is a solid 1 but a great 2. for that price, I might put him on the browns…it was evident when Megatron was out that without him, they had no passing game. Burleson really helps the offense. if they can vandenbosch too and suh, I see this team winning maybe 6 games next year just with these moves.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 2:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yea, that is Donte Stallworth-esque. Terrible signing.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

except that burleson produced more last year than I believe stallworth ever did in his career, and he faced a lot of coverage being a #1 receiver, and he was injured for 3 games.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 10:42 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

He has had more than 1,000 yards once in his 7 years as a pro. He is a year removed from a season in which he played 1 game. Last year as the supposed number 1 he had 813 yards and 3 TDs. So he did outproduce Stallworth, but that is nothing to write home about.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

but he produced that in 13 games. over a 16 game season, that production goes to 77 catches and 1000 yards.

I do think he is overpayed but I do see the thought process and I don’t completely disagree in Detroits situation. without Megatron they have no passing game and he was maybe the best Free Agent out there. He might end up being overpayed but he will have IMO great on the field production.

If you don’t know who he is, he is a monster DT that could be a nice quiet signing if we do deal Shaun Rogers.

I recognized the name and I thought “isn’t he a huge DT?”

Do you think he could play nose though? He has the size…and I am guessing by the rogers thing you might think so…

If you put him and rubin as a rotation at NT I really like that.

the one thing I worry about though is health. He doesn’t really have a history of injuries but he is coming off tearing his achilles tendon. he was on IR all year and he might not be in the best shape. also, the injury is likely one of the main reasons why they cut him. if he checks out medically and physically I am fine, but I do worry…

Here is a quick cheat sheet for those in the morning (at 3 AM, everything could change):

Dunta Robinson to Falcons should be a done deal by morning.

Julius Peppers, Chester Taylor and Brandon Mualaunna are all headed to Chicago for visits with Peppers expected to be signed by noon.

Aaron Kampmann has a lot of rumors going around with most of them having him ending up in Seattle.

Chad Clifton is headed to Washington for a visit.

Chad Pennington is close to a deal with the Fins but has a no trade clause holding it up.

Nate Burelson has signed with the Lions. First deal in the new uncapped world.

Jim Schwartz showed up at VandenBosch’s house at midnight. Schefter said it is practically a lock that he ends up in Detroit.

Only Browns news is that Justin Bannan is coming in for a visit.

In the 3-4 scheme, Fujita and D’Quell probably play the same position, the off side ILB. Guy who cleans up tackles past the LOS and prevents the running back from getting to the secondary. High Motor good tackler in space.

The Browns need that thumper MLB who can take charge of the defense and shoot the gap, get off blocks and make plays at or behind the LOS. Neither Fujita or DQ really fit the bill here.

I would have preferred a little more for Williams. He started to pick it up a little last year, and now we’re pretty thin at DE. I also wish we could have made a move for Cromartie. It just seems like the Browns never really have their eyes on a specific player in free agency and decided to get him no matter the costs; who is really a game changer at least. Maybe its a good thing since we don’t get locked into a Haynesworth type deal. But when you make Williams type deals then its really no better

The Browns are also not one player away from being there. We shouldn’t go after a high profile free agent until the team is a player or 2 from serious playoff contention.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Well, this isn’t baseball. Savage had a decent action plan when he tried to fill some of our many needs via FA. Granted, he had to overpay (and we likely would again as well), but what’s the point of not spending money if we’ re still profitable?

Brady Quinn will never be a good quarterback for the Browns.

I think Romeo Crennel was just incompetent. Phil Savage was probably decent as a scout, but wasn’t great with decisions, and he didn’t have anybody else in the FO to help him. Team had no direction and didn’t have great football mind drawing up the Xs and Os

yeah passing on Haloti Ngata for Kamerion Wembley… Savages second worst draft move, right after letting MATT MILLEN bend him over the table so Savage could move up one spot to draft Kellen Winslow. Millen got our pick and the guy he wanted anyway: Roy Williams.

If there weren’t a cap (permanently) there would be no problem with it, but there is and in 2008 we were right up near the cap ceiling. The team was not close to contention and we had a bunch of overpaid players as the reason.

I’ve read this idea somewhere here, but I can’t find it. So, with Williams and VandenBosch now on the Lions, it seems that the Lions are doing much better on DL. Does this put them out of contention for McCoy and Suh? If so, does this make the 2nd overall pick available (who else will they pick at that spot?) and should we consider making the trade up?

Speculation is that the lions took corey williams because they want to draft suh over mccoy. (McCoy and Williams both are 3-techs while Suh is more of a strong tackle)

The other option the lions might be looking at is offensive tackle, a body like Russell Okung would upgrade their OL right away.

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 1:53 PM EST reply actions

I wouldnt mind havin T. Jones, but i would rather draft a back, maybe Dwyer or McCluster

by BrutalMovement on Mar 5, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Of the two, I’d take Dwyer, since he’s a between the tackles power runner and we don’t have that. Playing in the Tech option attack, he’s a good blocker as well (I went to GT, I’ve watched Dwyer for years). HOWEVER, he’s not a great pass catcher and can’t really make guys miss in space. He’d need a good WR block to get sprung at the second level. Any safety worth their salt will sure tackle him. He’ll be a fantastic goal-line back in the NFL (dude’s bigger than most fullbacks), but I don’t think we should burn a high pick on him.

McCluster’s a smaller back and with Harrison and James Davis already in the fold, I don’t think we need a third of those.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Dwyer’s 40 time was pretty slow, I was not encouraged as a fan of his.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see us drafting a RB. The pickings are slim after the first round. Ryan Matthews was the guy who worked for me in the second round but now his stock has risen. If he falls, great but I’m targeting Jerry Hughes now for our #2 pick.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

He’s never been super fast. If he got sprung on a block, he was normally okay b/c no safeties played deep against Tech’s option offense, so he only had to worry about CBs who were playing man coverages against the WRs.

I think he’ll be a great short yardage runner in the NFL, but definitely not a full time starter. Great third down back for whoever gets him and I’d argue he’s the best blocking RB, but not worth a pick if you’re looking for a franchise RB.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

was their offensive line that much worse than his first year? probably not. he was significantly worse his second year….

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. The Bears O-line is bad, but it wasn’t much worse than the year prior. Forte did not have the burst he had his rookie season. I think he’s hurt, but that’s just my opinion from watching him run from one year to the next.

by chitown browns fan on Mar 6, 2010 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

maybe…or maybe he was overrated and is overrated period. even his first year, he only averaged 3.9 ypc. granted, the line wasn’t great, 2 straight seasons of very low ypc for a starter is telling…

To prove the point more, they got chester taylor b/c they likely don’t trust him ass the feature back.

by bross09 on Mar 6, 2010 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

i think he touched the ball 60 less time than the previous season.

by BrutalMovement on Mar 5, 2010 2:05 PM EST reply actions

and he would have had to have gotten about 5.4 yards per carry on those extra rushes to even rush for the same amount of yards.

2008: 1238 rushing yards 3.92 ypc, 8 TDs only one fumble

2009: 929 Rushing yards 3.6 ypc 4 TDs 6 fumbles, 3 lost.

More Advanced stats

2008: 63 first downs 20% of rushes for first down, 8 rushes 20+ yds 29% receptions for first down.

2009: 39 first downs 15% of rushes for first down, 3 rushes for 20+ yards 36.5 % rec first down.

overall, the stats just show that he was nowhere near as explosive…no matter what variables. If you put the 2009 Matt forte behind the 2008 Chicago bears line, and have him rush the exact same amount of times, he would significantly underperform still.

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions

For those not at home, Adam Schefter is reporting on ESPN that the Seahawks are considering signing Brandon Marshall to an offer sheet and sending the 6th overall pick to the Broncos.

Wow. I like me some Brandon Marshall but that is insane.

Schefter says it looks like it will happen. Stay tuned.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 2:29 PM EST reply actions

That could mean Berry makes it to the Browns. Many expected the seahawks would take him at 6.

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

Wow!

And you know Denver’s going to draft for offense in that spot (I’m guessing Dez Bryant). Berry might actually make it to #7.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Could go after a QB to if one falls to #6

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I honestly think McDaniels is okay with Kyle Orton. Look what he got out of Matt Cassel.

I think the strat might be surround a decent QB with a ton of weapons and spread the defense thin, similar to his last 3 years as Patriots OC.

Look at how much they loaded up on running back last year. Me thinks Josh is looking for pass catchers in the draft now.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Cassel is better than Orton. I don’t think Cassel was that bad last year, he just had no supporting cast.

The Chiefs still worry me with Berry.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Me too, but you never know, they could go tackle, pass rusher or inside linbacker. The chiefs are a major wild card

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think the Chiefs just HAVE GOT TO fix that O line.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Chiefs O-line troubles are on the interior so they could conceivably find Guards/Center in the 2nd round.

by gahnki on Mar 5, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah but Brandon Albert hasnt done well at left tackle so they could move him to left guard and draft a natural tackle

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

With Pioli’s track record… I think LT in the first is a lock. Fix 3 positions (including the big hole at center) for the price of one pick. Golden.

by TheRealSlimShady on Mar 5, 2010 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Is it me or is Pete Carroll crazy? he could TRADE DOWN a few spots and still take Dez Bryant if he wants a WR. Hell Bryant might still be there at #14. I’m flabbergasted.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I guess he figures that Marshall is a sure thing.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Carroll’s doing the same thing he did at USC. Load up with recruiting and have a flashy team, then get crushed by the first team he plays that actually knows how to gameplan defensively.

And he’s in a powder puff division (again, just like in college), so he’ll probably get away with it.

I think Seattle’s drafting a RB anyway, so I’m not too worried.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t remember USC getting “crushed” very often during Carroll’s tenure. Most of their losses were very close games.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 5, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

and remember, he still needs a QB, a RB, a Tackle and hes pretty thin on Defense too. Especially for a defensive minded coach who is used to being head and shoulders above his competition in terms of talent.

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

would it be cheaper in the long run to sign marshall to a new contract vs paying the #6 pick overall & dealing with a training camp holdout?

by sleepy042 on Mar 5, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

The only downside is that Brandon Marshall is one “argument with his woman” away from an 8 game suspension.

Disclaimer**** This guy has a “source” who has been right before so here is the RUMOR right now.

Just heard the Browns are pondering an offer for Brady Quinn. 3rd rounder this year and a conditional 2011 pick to send Quinn to be a backup/eventual starter. Not sure if I’d do it if I was either team.

Very questionable at best, but thought I should pass it on.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions

I’d take that in a heartbeat.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 5, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think the browns have got to start Quinn this year. If they send him out they are either sold on a guy like Colt McCoy or Tebow, or planning on starting that guy who made the team over Richard Bartel.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

I would rather they draft Dan LeFeverour if we go QB in the third.

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

Am i the only person that really like Tony Pike from Cincy? Even with a porous line, he ate up soft secondaries (until he went up against Florida and that line got exposed).

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

he has good size to if im not mistaken

by BrutalMovement on Mar 5, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

by Skov17 on Mar 5, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

He has got a jello arm and a noodle arm…at least he throws with the noodle.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think he’s an NFL quarterback. He feasted off bad defenses in the Big East. As you said, look what Florida did to him.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 5, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

I say look what Florida did to that OL rather than him. It’s not like how Colt Brennan got beat up by Georgia’s defense. Hawaii actually had a line. Brennan just hadn’t faced that sort of speed before.

If Pike’s there in a later round (4th or below) I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on him.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

OK, so how is Colt Brennan doing in the NFL?

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 5, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Backing up a guy and learning instead of getting ate alive as a starter?

David Carr, Joey Harrington, and Matt Stafford might’ve preffered that…

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

He’s the third string quarterback for the Redskins. He has no starting potential. Comparing him to top 5 picks is inaccurate.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 5, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not a big fan of LeFevor or Tony Pike. Frankly I don’t like anything about quarterbacks out of the first round. However there’s only 2 first round quarterbacks this year and I only really like Bradford. Tebow has first round body and first round mind but a goofy release that everyone says is too slow and too low. Sounds like a much more athletic Bernie Kosar. I just think Tebow will be a good NFL qb if someone coaches him up on the mental aspects.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Tebow needs a good 2 to 3 years playing behind a GOOD QB with a good position coach to be a good NFL QB. He’ll be ruined if he’s a starter in ’10.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

He has nowhere near the arm strength, accuracy, or ability to read a defense that kosar had when they came out. the only similarity is the release.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

no, his accuracy is on film worse that Kosar was in his career. Thats because Kosar was fantastically accurate. Reading the defense remains to be seen, Tebow can probably learn an NFL playbook.

As for sheer arm strength, Tebow is significantly better than Bernie ever was. Tebow has a strong arm and vastly more athleticism.

The knocks on tebow are accuracy and throwing mechanics, I think he has the will and the physical tools to make something of his NFL career. I’m not going to bet against him.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

tebow does NOT have a strong arm. he has an average arm but it looks stronger b/c he is pretty accurate on deep throws. he is accurate on his deeper throws but can’t hit the short and intermediate, just like DA. in that sense in accuracy, he is like DA except with average arm strength and a ball that floats.

there are much more knocks than just accuracy and throwing mechanics.

How about:

Doesn’t throw the ball smooth (not accuracy, not really mechanics)
Doesn’t make pro style progression reads
Doesn’t make good reads in general (when he makes them)
Locks on to primary rteceiver
Tucks and runs way too often.

And he goes to a school that produces a lot of QB busts.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. Unless you have a good guy at QB (like Manning or Brady) don’t take mid-round QBs. You either need one enough to draft him in the first (sometimes second if you really like them) but not in the 3rd or 4th.

Scientific research has proven that you lose exactly 5.37 billion brain cells every time you listen to Todd McShay.

I am not in love with Brady quinn. But frankly the cost of another QB experiment is just too high. Bradford is a question mark, Clausen is the next Matt Lineart. Any QB after the first round has the odds heavily stacked against him. I wouldn’t waste the draft pick when we could add to our Defense or O line. Theres another draft next year and I promise it will have QBs too.

I hate to say this but the one QB i would consider drafting is Tebow. He seems like the one guy you couldn’t wait and get a carbon copy of next year. He has all the size you want in an NFL QB and is a freak athlete. Not to mention Intangibles out the wazoo. All the talk about a funky release and such is a pile if you ask me, Bernie had the worst sidearm release you’d ever seen, but he won a lot of football games.

Not to say I want to draft Tebow, but if I had to take a qb this year, that’s the guy I wouldn’t bet against.

by sleepy042 on Mar 5, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Tebow needs to go to a good team with a QB already so he can sit back and learn for 2-3 years (like Tony Romo & Aaron Rodgers had to).

He should NOT, under any circumstances, start in 2010.

And please stop with the comparisons to Bernie Kosar. Kosar was slow to deliver, but very very accurate. Tebow is not accurate. More a worse version of Vince Young.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree. didn’t kosar also have a pretty solid arm (when it came to arm strength). tebow doesn’t. he also doesn’t have experience reading a defense and is too much of a running QB.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

tebow has considerably more arm strength than Kosar. Accuracy however, definitely Kosar had more than what Tebow has shown so far.

"My signature is only one line. You're welcome."

by jaws. on Mar 5, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree. tebow has pedestrian arm strength really. kosar wasn’t that bad…

Accuracy, DA almost has more than what tebow had in college. He also floats his passes in there and has horrible touch on passes. when I say he doesn’t make reads, that is somewhat false though. he DOESN’T make reads period.

This is what tebow does, he has a staring contest with his #1 receivers back of the head. when he figures out that guy is covered, he ducks and runs.

I have made it pretty well known that I am not a fan of taking a QB late and letting him develop.

But we have the one guy who has had a knack for making that work. Holmgren groomed Aaron Brooks, Mark Brunell and Matt Hasselbeck in back-up roles.

If Colt McCoy is there in the third, I would love to take him and let him learn for a year behind a Bulger type guy.

I know that Holmgren isn’t the coach, but with his eye for QB talent and Gil Haskell having input, I would be very happy with this arrangement.

I’m just having a little fun at Clausen’s expense, I’m not a fan of Clausen but it’s not because he went to ND or is from California.

Still, this is Cleveland, me-first types just don’t get much support from our fans (see Edwards, Braylon) If Clausen is like that, I don’t want him. Pretty sure I don’t want him anyway.

Wait….

Albert Belle was a jerk?

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Albert belle wasn’t a me-first player. He was just a surly asshole who didn’t like the media (me and him have that in common) He left for more money but that is just the norm nowadays, we low-balled him a little bit and his hip degenerated after he left the club, making us look smart.

He was a player who was incredibly focused and intense, completely dedicated to winning above all else. Think more Michael Jordan with worse public relations skills and a little shorter fuse.

Albert bell was the exact opposite of a lackadaisical guy who only plays for the check and takes plays off. He would probably turn over a clubhouse buffet table and scream at a teammate who was one, actually.

I don’t know what you are disputing, just that Clausen is not hated because of the school he attends. I am not disputing that Clausen is hated in general for other reasons.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 6, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Of course it has a lot to do with him attending Notre Dame. If you think it doesn’t than you’re kidding yourself. Notre Dame is the Yankees of college football (without all the winning). Some of it probably has to do with his personality, or what people think they know about him, but if he was the QB of Kansas State or Purdue or Arizona or Wake Forest or any other mediocre college team then he wouldn’t be nearly as hated.

I don’t really think comparing him to Golden Tate disproves anything. He’s not nearly as well-known as Clausen because of the position he plays. It’s not a valid comparison.

Over the offseason he invited Kyle Rudolph, Michael Floyd, Golden Tate (and maybe Armando Allen too), to his home so they could all practice together in the offseason. Asshats don’t do that.

I was more worried about KC and Washington than Seattle. Doesn’t change a whole lot for me. If Berry’s gone, I think we end up taking Haden.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Haden if Berry is gone….I can’t believe some actually have us getting Dez Bryant. Thats not going to happen

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Haden or McClain would be my choices

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

I’m iffy on McClain, if only b/c we got a LOT of LBs last year that didn’t get too much playing time until the end of the season. Veikune, Maivia, Roth, Benard. That’s on top of David Bowens, D’Qwell Jackson…

I’m not saying we’re set at LB, but there’s enough youth and depth there to develop as opposed to last year where I would’ve KILLED for Aaron Curry.

Now look at last season’s CB lineup: we entered camp with Eric Wright, Rod Hood, Corey Ivy, B-Mac, Hank Poteat, Coye Francies, and Don Carey. Two of those didn’t make it through camp, Francies hardly saw the field, I’d rather put Mangini himself in than line up B-Mac against a #2 WR, and Poteat’s a born nickel/dime back.

We need another corner BADLY.

I think it does affect it a bit. There was the chance that seattle would pass on a QB. there is also the chance that QB goes #1 and then #4 to the redskins…the redskins are not completely out of taking a QB with their pick. shanahan did pick cutler.

with denver picking there, they will likely take Dez Bryant. they are tired of Marshall and with him gone obviously need a receiver. they might also consider McClain b/c they could use some help on the inside.

by bross09 on Mar 5, 2010 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

This couldn’t be a better deal for the broncos. If they get the #6 pick in the draft, they can add Dez Bryant AND rolando McClain. If you listen closely you can hear miami Dolphin fans cutting themselves.

to be clear….I’m not saying special teams aren’t important….I’m saying just how much is too much to pay a special teams player

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

well you arent only paying for special teams. you now have a solid player the public relates too & likes, some much needed leadership in the clubhouse & lets be honest. right now on the roster he is the ONLY explosive playmaker.

by sleepy042 on Mar 5, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Presuming we build an offense worth a damn, the field position we start with off every kick off and punt is only going to help the team.

He touched the ball less than any offensive skill position player, yet he scored more TDs than all of them except Jerome Harrison.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I agree completely right now…however, I’m just saying 6mil a year for a kick returner is not how I run my team. If our offense becomes worth anything, doesn’t matter as long as we aren’t on our own 5yd line starting out

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

You’re working in hypotheticals now. We’re not going to have a suddenly explosive offense. This locks up a great weapon for three years, which is about as much as we’ll need to field a competitive team in the other two phases of the game and I’m being optimistic in that estimation.

Yes, we probably overpaid, but he’s still the best and most consistent player on the team and has been for three years.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

true, but I don’t think Mike lets our O be disappointing for long

by Kimble_79 on Mar 5, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

It’s a 3 year contract. Holmgren’s going to need no less than two years to put a good team on the field. One that’ll compete for a division title year in and year out.

If we locked him up for 6 years, then I’d say something.

by Michael Jay on Mar 5, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think I remember hearing that Holmgrem wanted to start getting Cribbs more offensive touches.

by OSUMoneyball on Mar 5, 2010 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

No I agree.

We massively overpaid Josh Cribbs. From my understanding, the “new contract” replaces the final three years of his deal.

We are paying a kick returner and kick gunner six million dollars a season.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 5, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly, it seems like some of it is conditional. If he does what he did last year for the next three, I’m happy with $6M per.

Brady Quinn will never be a good quarterback for the Browns.

by danvail on Mar 5, 2010 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

Finally. Now maybe the Browns can start concentrating on getting new talent in.

Atleast wait until the draft. We can draft good players or use are picks to trade for good players with good contracts without splurging on aging expensive players.

Don’t be a drama queen. Signing the most high-priced free agents doesn’t turn teams around. Look at the 49ers and Browns from a few years ago when they crushed free agency. Both team are still mediocre at best.

Seneca Wallace….http://blog.seattlepi.com/football/archives/196838.asp

I mean, that’s not terrible, but still Troy Smith is younger and we could get him for a fifth round pick.

For depth and a late pick, not the worst thing.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 6, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

True. I mean, Wallace isn’t Spergeon Wynn by any stretch, but he’s not a free agent of any kind. Just ponderous as to who we’d trade to get him.

by Dusty W on Mar 6, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

no thanks on Seneca Wallace. If we need a guy like that we could acquire Troy Smith or Tim Tebow. Frankly I don’t want anybody who could challenge Brady in camp. Make Quinn “the guy” and see how he responds.

I am talking about spending wisely. people are upset we aren’t just throwing money around. you know who threw money around at people and hope some stuck? savage.

by bross09 on Mar 7, 2010 1:25 AM EST up reply actions

I will answer this question because I think I am the main guy crowing about overpaying. Sorry, this will be long, but it was needed.

The Browns have a very unique opportunity, along with the rest of the NFL, in this uncapped season. Teams can act one of two ways, they can spend money willy-nilly and hope that this moment of weakness never comes back to bite them in the ass, or they can do the smart thing.

The smart thing to do is rid themselves, penalty free I might add, of horrible contracts and players that have out-lived their usefulness. They have a chance to press the reset button on some bad ideas.

The Browns have started this with the Stallworth release. They did the impossible and got a pick for a player they were going to cut in Williams. They should continue and really cut off any excess fat on this roster (looking at you Mr. St. Clair).

The players union is starting to put 2 and 2 together. They are figuring out that the salary cap was the best thing going for them. It kept all franchises competitive and spread out the spending. 32 teams spending 110 million each means that there is a lot of money to go around. Baseball only 10 teams spend that kind of money, because they don’t have the financial system that the NFL has.

Why is this important? I think it is a pretty good indicator that the NFL will have a salary cap in the next CBA. The players will demand it. Unless the union leadership craps the bed (which I think there could be a chance, DeMaurice Smith is in WAAAY over his head) there will be a cap in ’11.

When that bill comes due, would you rather have a roster that has been trimmed down to the best players at the smallest price, or an 34 YO RB being paid 6 million a season and a 32 YO DE being paid 91 million?

Yes, these days may be boring watching all the “talent” being snapped up by desperate front offices, but it two seasons when the Browns have 65 million dollars in cap space and can sign young Bears like Johnny Knox or young Lions like Louis Delmas, you will look back at this offseason and say “Damn the Browns were actually really smart”.

That is why we should still be worrying about “overpaying” in an uncapped season.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 7, 2010 1:34 AM EST up reply actions

Does St. Clair really have that bad of a contract?
I know he sucks but if we cut him we will only have Pork Chop to play on the right side.

I am expecting more additions like Pashos in the future.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 7, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

St. Clair’s contract was pretty small and I think only has 1 year left. Shaffer was the one with the bad contract, Mangini got rid of him.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 7, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

best players at the smallest price

The problem is, we don’t have these best players. We have a few but not enough to be competitive.

Then you say we can sign Delmas or Knox in the future, but what if they get offered a lot of money by some team and we stick to the idea that we don’t want fat contracts on our team.
I just don’t want us to be like a rich person who is too scared to spend his money.

It’s kind of hard to explain what i mean. I don’t mean overpaid in the sense of the size of the contract. One might say all athletes are overpaid already, some could say they are overpaid. I mean overpaid in the sense of what you are getting for your money relative to that players value (age, experience, talent, etc.)

Maybe this will help.

If Player X, who we will give the value of 90 (think Madden rankings for example), is paid $40 million.

vs.

If Player Y (draft pick or much lesser FA), who we will give the value of 75 (Again, Madden rankings) is paid $850k per season.

By rights you should be able to use that extra money to address other, more important, areas of your team.

I think that is what Villeslgr is talking about.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 7, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

You still need to have those 90s on your team.

Scientific research has proven that you lose exactly 5.37 billion brain cells every time you listen to Todd McShay.

by TheRealSlimShady on Mar 7, 2010 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

Not against those 90s, just don’t want to pay them more than they’re worth. Especially if they were a 95 the year before, a 96 before that a 98 before that, and a 99 before that.

I’d rather pay less for a 88, that was an 85 the year before and who is appreciably younger.

There are other ways to acquire those players besides free agency.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 7, 2010 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

Correct.

This is why the draft is 10x more important than FA.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 7, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

But you still have to resign players, and that will cost a lot if they are good.

Scientific research has proven that you lose exactly 5.37 billion brain cells every time you listen to Todd McShay.

by TheRealSlimShady on Mar 7, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

Re-signing your own players is more important than signing other teams’ free agents.

by Roger Dorn on Mar 7, 2010 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

Of course. But that’s not what we’re talking about . . . we’re talking about signing other team’s free agents, and that’s usually not a cost-effective way to build your team. If teams want to keep their good players they usually work out an extension before the player reaches free agency, and usually those contracts aren’t nearly as expensive as free agent contracts.

Nobody has a problem with spending money on talented players, we just want to do it the right way and not throw money around just because we can.

by Buckeye Brad on Mar 7, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Good teams do this.

Ravens defense has been built through the draft.
Steelers defense has been built through the draft.
Colts offense has been built through the draft.

Draft good players and spend money to keep them on your team. It is how good football teams have been staying good for years.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 7, 2010 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

and then there are those players like X who has a value of 90 and is payed 40 million, lets say over 5 years.

player Y has a rating of 88 and is payed 70 million over the same stretch because of how desperate the team is for the position, and how well a player fits.

Both players play positions that in general have a similar value but player y gets overpayed by team 1 because the team is more desperate for the certain position than team 2 is for player Xs position. Is it irrationally overpaying when you pay a guy a lot just because he fits a position of need?

by bross09 on Mar 7, 2010 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

You are forgetting a key point. The teams that are spending wildly now won’t have cap space in the future.

I just don’t want us to be like a rich person who is too scared to spend his money

If there was a player worth throwing money at, I would be with you. But as of right now, the free agent crop this year was really, really ugly as it concerned the Browns.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 7, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Question for people saying everyone is being overpayed:

If everyone is being overpayed, is anyone really being overpayed or do we just need to get used to increased salaries?

Scientific research has proven that you lose exactly 5.37 billion brain cells every time you listen to Todd McShay.

by TheRealSlimShady on Mar 7, 2010 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Salaries may increase but that doesn’t mean that the person who receives that salary is bringing you the value you need for the amount you’re spending. As salaries increase there will still be players who will receive contracts that will appear to be a case of overspending.

salaries will come down some with the new CBA. the Salary cap will be smaller than it was (per the economy shrinking) and big guaranteed contracts for unproductive old players will be big trouble. the word Overpay means pay more than they are worth.

I can’t believe how bad the Peppers and Rolle contracts are. Karlos Dansby is an elite ILB, but even an elite player at his position isn’t worth the money he just got paid, he is only 5% better at the point of attack then the guy the phins just cut to make room for him.

by jaws. on Mar 7, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

The Browns used to be the team that set the market with the big contracts. So did the Redskins.

If you look at the smart teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Patriots, Eagles you rarely see them making a big splash in free agency except (and this is a key point) when the re-sign their own players. Occasionally a smart team will shell out a lot of cash for a player at a premium position (think Asante Samuel) but it happens every few years and typically when the team feels it is a player away.
