For shame, Big Ben

I am all for the innocent until proven guilty, but the fact that Ben was even putting himself in this situation after what went down this past year proves that he is a complete moron or a serial sexual offender of women.
Anyone think Rooney will drop another nugget like this one?
“We’re extremely disappointed with this incident,” team chairman Dan Rooney said. “The Steelers do not condone violence of any kind, especially against women.”
That was when they cut Cedrick Wilson. Then James Harrison punched a pregnant woman. Now Big Ben goes off and Kobe’s two women.
The Steelers, where we don’t condone violence against women, unless you are a Pro Bowler.

I heard a statement by him that said they weren’t going to elaborate until law enforcement has done it’s job. But they said nothing of being behind Ben or supporting him. So I’m thinking they’re a little pissed.

I totally agree. If it happens once, ok maybe someone is just trying to get money out of him. But again? Seriously something is going on.

Kobe’s two women
That’s a really lame expression. Kobe was not convicted of jack shit and the evidence against him was the word of a psychotic woman. I hope you never get accused of anything you didn’t do.

Dude, Kobe Kobe’d that woman, then OJ’ed it in court.

All charges were dropped, because the prosecution had no case. Sorry that Cavs fans want to demean Kobe, but he’s got a lot more game than LeBron and a lot more rings. You guys should root for Lebron, and hope he doesn’t ditch your town, not accuse Kobe of rape.
by TheDriveStillHurts on Mar 9, 2010 7:25 PM EST up reply actions
Yes. Dad is from Cleveland and I am a die-hard Browns and Indians fan (I don’t think the Cavs even existed when he left), but we were always Lakers fans — it’s hard not to be when you are from LA.
Sorry to get a little bent out of shape. I don’t think it’s fair to assume Kobe was guilty, and the evidence against him was rail thin. But we can agree to disagree. I do hope that LeBron stays in Cleveland for Cleveland’s sake, but I have little love for the guy in light of the Yankee hat incident.

And there are a lot of Browns fans in LA, and all of them are Lakers fans — the Lakers are the only real team in LA that everyone always loves (Dodgers to a lesser extent, but the ownership is so sucky that it is hard to root for them these days).

I don’t want to get into it at all since I think where the discussion would lead is ultimately considered political, but I read the leaked police reports back when it happened. I think he is innocent, but others would disagree.
I would not use settlements as a form of evidence for guilt. Quite often, it is more cost-effective to settle even when in the right, than go through a lengthy court process.
I personally have a hard time believing that a innocent person would pay money (I am assuming that it was over 7 figures) just to make something go away.
I would be shouting from the rooftops that I was innocent, and I sure wouldn’t pay money to my accuser.
IMO, innocent people don’t pay through the nose to have something go away.
by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 9, 2010 10:30 PM EST up reply actions
You are not very familiar with the American legal system then. It literally happens on a daily basis; perhaps not to the amount that Kobe paid, but I’d argue that his settlement was more valuable to him for image reasons.
I guess that is what I would argue differently.
I think him paying off the woman did more to hurt his image than fighting it did.
Take Big Ben as an example. In the first case, he went on the offensive and said that the woman was a liar. He didn’t give her a dime and was taking her to court to clear his name. He didn’t lose any endorsements and the majority of people forgot or no longer cared about the case because it looked like he was innocent.
While I can understand what you can gain by a quick payout, I think that the overall good of clearing your name is the prudent choice for an innocent person.
by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 10, 2010 2:08 AM EST up reply actions
Big Ben isn’t married. Tiger although his case is an extreme example is an example of a married man cheating.
Kobe admitted to being guilty of adultery, that is what hurt his endorsements. The public will quickly forget, nay will assume, single athletes are promiscuous. If they don’t break laws only a select few will care.
Ben was fighting for his right to have random sex, Kobe’s status had already taken the hit because of his infidelity, the quickest way to remove the spotlight was to avoid further discussion and negotiate a settlement.

You’re the only one who thinks this. Most people know how the US legal system works, and took it for what it was.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Mar 11, 2010 11:51 AM EST up reply actions
he’s not the only one. Its not like it would have cost him that much more money to fight it and clear his name.
I don’t necessarily think he did it, but I think paying her off leaves him open to people thinking he’s guilty for the rest of his life. fighting it could have cleared him.
I can also see why he did it though, paying her off got it out of the public eye fast, and meant his wife didn’t have to see it in the news all the time. I don’t think one option was better than the other to tell you the truth, there aren’t any “good” options when you’ve been accused of rape and admitted infidelity, but personally I would try and clear myself of the rape charge rather than leave the appearance that I bribed someone to keep quiet.

Kobe lost all but one of his endorsements (McDonalds, Sprite and Nutella) after he paid the woman off. (Nike stuck with him but pulled Kobe from all commercials and other ads).
He has had to keep his nose clean and walk the straight and narrow since to earn back the privilege of being a spokesman.
Ben Roethlisberger on the other hand wasn’t dropped by Nike, Findlay or Dicks sporting goods. In fact Dicks and Nike had him in a commercial weeks after the accusations. Why? Probably because he was fighting the charges.
Again, I can understand what you can gain by a quick payout, I think that the overall good of clearing your name is the prudent choice for an innocent person. If you think the quick and easy way is best, by all means that is your opinion. But in my life, I have found that taking the quick and easy way usually comes back to bite you in the ass.
But don’t say I am the only person who thinks that, because apparently Nike, Findlays and Dicks feels like I do. More than one way to skin a cat.
by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 11, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions
An innocent rich person would. Why risk going to a trial if the accusing party is willing to accept a settlement. Paying money though it comes across as a guilty action does not always indicate guilt.

He lost all of his endorsements and media darling status. What else in the public eye was he going to lose?
by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 10, 2010 1:56 AM EST up reply actions
He had already lost the media darling status after the accusations came out and he admitted to infidelity. I can’t remember too much about him losing endorsements. But I’m sure an unfaithful athlete would lose some endorsements, unless your name is Jordan.

Not true at all. Every legal expert I heard said that he got a much longer sentence than most people would have given the same offense. He didn’t hurt anyone but himself.
by Buckeye Brad on Mar 11, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions
He was also offered a settlement that would have left him with only a couple months and some community service, so they did try to let him off easy, he just wouldn’t take it.

I think we all hate Ben Rothlisberger. I like what Colin Cowherd said about this today: If you are Ben Rothlisberger, what on earth are you doing at some seedy college nightclub? Nightclubs are where you become Plaxico Burress. You’re a millionaire, find some more productive way to spend your time besides seedy nightclubs and riding your motorcycle without a helmet.

Don’t listen to Colin Cowherd.

by Bernie19Kosar on Mar 9, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions
Yes, Cowherd is a real piece of garbage. But he does have a point here. The guy shouldn’t be putting himself in that kind of position, especially being less than a year removed from a legal dispute. Events like this make me really value the fact that we looked deeply into players with character and brains last year. Let’s hope that they make it a priority again this year with the new regime.

Of course it’s not fair, but you have to protect yourself if you’re a celebrity, and i’m not even talking about sexual relations, there are plenty of people who like to show how tough they are by “disrespecting/stepping to” famous people.

I really believe that ESPN hires certain people with the job description of pushing certain hot topic buttons to piss off a specific type of fans generating more interest and better ratings because of the disagreeing portion. Skip Bayless and Colin Cowherd are 2 such employees.
The more dumb sh*t he says, the more people call in to tell him he is wrong.
It is a vicious cycle.
Honestly the best national sports talk guy was Steve Czaban, but FOX decided to can him for Steven A. Smith.
Steven A. Smith does the same thing by bringing race into every discussion.
