Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

The following come from ESPN's Adam Schefter (also confirmed that Big Ben has been suspended for 6 games):

"Every team that everybody debated for Donovan McNabb is now back in play on Ben Roethlisberger. Same candidates, different QB."

"Pittsburgh has begun contacting teams to trade Ben Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. At least one team considering it. Story far from done."

any news on whether the 6 games is conditional or not? what i mean is, will it definitely be six games or can it be reduced with good behavior.

It was a pretty half-hearted article, all told, considering Pro Football is really simply not his thing. But, I wouldn’t mind the deal where we go to the number 4 pick to get Berry at all.

by DisplacedBuckeye on Apr 21, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t want to trade up for him when I think he will get to 7 naturally.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 21, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think there’s a chance he doesn’t fall to us at 7. I should say, I agree with the trade if the FO thinks he won’t be available at 7. Obviously, if we don’t need to trade-up, getting him at 7 is a perfect scenario in my opinion.

by DisplacedBuckeye on Apr 21, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Some pretty bizarre stuff in there. This was weird:

Digging deeper, let’s say the NFL pressed the reset button, made every QB a free agent, then held a QB lottery for the 32 teams. The top 12 order of preference would look something like this: Peyton Manning (picked first overall); Tom Brady (sixth round); Drew Brees (second round); Philip Rivers (fourth overall); Aaron Rodgers (24th overall); Ben Roethlisberger (11th overall); Mark Sanchez (fifth overall); Matt Ryan (third overall); Eli Manning (first overall); Tony Romo (undrafted); Joe Flacco (18th overall); Matt Schaub (third round).

Sanchez? That is even weirder when later in the article he says: “So based on the last 12 years of evidence, it’s just as likely that Bradford will murder the Rams as save them. Of course, you could have said the same thing about Matthew Stafford last spring … and he made it.” So, if Stafford has already “made it” (I like the guy a lot but one year is not having “made it”), what does he consider Sanchez?

Then there’s this:

Level 3 (hopefully weren’t missing): David Carr (1), Tim Couch (1), Alex Smith (1), JaMarcus Russell (1), Matthew Stafford (1), Ryan Leaf (2), Donovan McNabb (2), Akili Smith (3), Joey Harrington (3), Vince Young (3), Matt Ryan (3). . . . You would not have wagered your life on any of the Level 3 guys. Three made it; seven bombed; and Young gets an incomplete.

Besides Stafford (?), who are the other tow who “made it”? McNabb obviously, and Ryan I guess. But then how does Vince Young get an “incomplete” when Stafford (in one year) has already “made it.” Young had at least one really good year.

If I were in that QB Mock draft, there is only one QB I would take over Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers is scary good.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 21, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

The order of the 4 guys following Peyton is definitely arguable, but I like the order he put for them. Rodgers is definitely really good, but at this point I think I go with Brees or Rivers over him (think SD had both those guys) - but talk to me next year and if ARod keeps it up, I may reevaulate. Brady is a tougher call — still not clear that he has fully recovered from his injury.

The top 5 is definitely ahead of the rest with the top 1 being pretty much undisputed. If we are talking for just next year (ie, not taking age into account), I would add Favre and McNabb and slot them in right after Rodgers.

I’d also put Stafford where Flacco is, put Flacco after him, and move Schaub in front of Eli and Romo, and switch Eli & Romo. And Sanchez? Seriously? (He may turn out to be good, but at this point I’d rather have any of those guys after him, with the exception of possibly Flacco (and not taking into account Ben’s troubles.)

by TheDriveStillHurts on Apr 21, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

So, here’s my mock:

1. P. Manning

2. Brady*
3. Brees*
4. Rivers*
5. Rodgers*

6. Favre+
7. McNabb+

8. B. RapistBerger
9. Ryan
10. Schaub
11. Romo
12. E. Manning

13. Stafford
14. Flacco

Others worth considering at later picks: Sanchez, Kolb, Vince Young, Delhomme (j/k)

*These guys are all arguably moveable in this position — ie they are all candidates for number 2 after Peyton Manning.

+Assuming a one-year time horizon — if not, scratch at least Favre from the list and put McNabb towards the bottom.

by TheDriveStillHurts on Apr 21, 2010 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I was assuming that this mock draft scenario was not just limited to one season.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 21, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I would not take Peyton #1. He’s 34.

Rivers, then probably Rodgers. After that, perhaps Brees. Then, maybe, Manning. If I take Manning in that I also draft QBs in the middle rounds regularly. One of them will be able to learn enough from Manning to become his replacement.

On the other hand, he’s a top 10 QB and we haven’t had one of those in 20+ years.

And we’d have a hell of an advantage against Pittsburgh at first (as Ben knows their playbook). And he’d have something to prove against them. And I still don’t like it at all.

Also, very doubtful that they’d trade within the division, though a 7 pick (if he is on the block) would be hard to pass up.

While they do want a Top 10 pick for him, isn’t Ben’s contract extremely expensive and difficult to deal? Would that lower the demand fo rhim? Not to mention the 4-6 games he’ll have to sit.

While Ben has the talent, his situation and his contract could negate some of the price that Pittsburgh is asking for.

by talonk on Apr 21, 2010 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

the deal is through 2015, so missing 4-6 games this year would barely leave a mark on his trade value independent of uh…. everything else.

3/3/2008: Signed an eight-year, $102 million contract. The deal contains $33.2 million guaranteed, including a $25.2 million signing bonus and a $3 million roster bonus in the second year. Also included is a clause forbidding Roethlisberger from participating in “hazardous activities,” e.g. riding a motorcycle with no helmet. 2010: $8.05 million, 2011-2014: $11.6 million, 2015: $12.1 million, 2016: Free Agent

I wonder if alleged rape is considered a “hazardous activity”.

That’s like an 18MM cap hit, so yeah that’s probably going to be difficult for Pitt to manage. Probably not impossible, though. The team receiving actually has a pretty decent deal. The only thing they’d have to pay him should they want to cut him ever is any remaining guaranteed money not included in already paid signing / roster bonuses. At most it’s 5MM.

They’d also be getting lower cap numbers since Pitt has to absorb all that normally-amortized signing bonus money into their cap at the time of trade.

So, fiscally, a good deal for the receiving club, rough deal for the Steelers. Let’s hope they can manage it.

Being accused twice, having to go to behavioral therapy after the NFL reviewed the case, and comments from girls that went to college with the guy saying that he was very intrusive with them all support using that word. There is a point when multiple factors are pointing in that direction that its harder and harder to not call him that based on the fact he hasn’t been formally charged.

Look, without trying to defend the guy, who is unequivocally and at MINIMUM a sleaze, a super-creep, and an idiot, there are some things not to like about the girl’s story. She was asked point blank if she was raped by the officer on scene, and said “no”. The Smoking Gun police reports are an education in confusion and uncertainty.

What seems most likely is that she was totally “out of it” / barely conscious and he took advantage of her. I would qualify that as rape. Still, I’m not comfortable making the judgement beyond personal opinion.

Just the fact that this has to be discussed in any detail is more than enough to forever personally blacklist the guy. Keep him the fuck away from team, my city, and women without tazers.

Right. I’ve had this debate at work with several people. I’ve heard people bring up a lot of “similar” situations — Duke Lacrosse, Kobe, even Tiger. I think what separates Ben R’s situation is the following:

(1) This is the second time that something has gone public about an incident like this where charges were pressed/pending/talked about. That doesn’t make this one more believable, but it does suggest a pattern of Ben putting himself in stupid situations, in the best light, and repeatedly sexually assaulting women in the worst light.

(2) He was told to stop this type of behavior by the Rooneys and the NFL (Goddell maybe) after the first incident. He’s a moron, again, for putting himself in the type of situation where it is even a question of whether or not this is/was sexual assault.

(3) There is a lot of eye-witness corraboration for some of the basic facts of what happened: him buying her and her friends shots, getting taken to the bathroom and him following.

The guy in the least is an utter and unbelievably egotistical moron. On the other end…well, we all know what he is. Get away from my team and my city. I would like to think if there were Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn, or going back to Bernie Kosar…I would say the same thing.

I’ve heard people bring up a lot of "similar" situations — Duke Lacrosse, Kobe, even Tiger

Tiger is not even applicable — there is no accusation that anything was not consensual. And I think the Kobe thing was BS and Duke LaCrosse from what I know is the same, but there were accusations of nonconsensual sex there — Tiger, as much as a douche he is, has never been accused of rape or anything like it.

None of these “compounding” factors means rape, though. He is obviously guilty beyond doubt of being a very bad guy. But calling someone a rapist shouldn’t be thrown around lightly (echoing danvail, not scolding).

One big difference is what you believe in private versus what you are putting on print on the internet for all eternity. Calling someone a rapist is high slander if you don’t have any proof. Unfortunately, that’s just the reality.

by joeee on Apr 21, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

believe me, i am not throwing this around lightly. before the police report came out i wouldn’t have even said i thought he did anything wrong. but thats one very specific story that has been repeated by multiple people and it doesn’t have any holes in it. I also highly doubt they fire a police officer over this if the girl is lying.

For me, it’s a power of the word type of thing. If “rapist” gets thrown around too casually, it lessens the impact when it’s used to describe the violent predator type – those that commit unspeakable, inhuman crimes. The kind that make your blood boil. That’s why I’m not comfortable with the term.

NTN, if you feel you’ve done your homework and are comfortable calling the man a rapist, then so be it I won’t press the issue. I don’t really disagree with that anyway.

I am calling BS on this. I like Schefter, but this list strikes me as a compilation of teams that need a QB, and no actual source.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 21, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but it makes sense that those are the teams that the Steelers would call to gauge interest.

We may have called, just to see what the price actually was even though we never intended to make a real offer.

Doesn’t hurt to know what the price is because if another team pays that price, you can adjust your draft strategy accordingly.

this brings up something i think about.: when with the NFLN, Schefter had always been neck-and-neck, in my opinion, with Jay Glazer when it came to being the first to accurately break stories. Since he’s been with ESPN (and well, things like Twitter don’t help), he doesn’t seem to be on the breaking edge anymore.

Do you think legit sources are hesitant to break pending news to ESPN guys because they are intent on being the first to report it, and may hurt the source within his organization? Even typing this out I seem foil-tinhat-ish, but Schefter seems to be more on the “confirming” end of news than the breaking end like he used to be.

You are reading my signature.

by rolub on Apr 21, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that Schefter still breaks more stories than anyone, but I don’t have any evidence to back that up.

As for the ESPN part, I would believe that 100%.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 21, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree on ESPN changing his style some. Schefter from my point of view on Twitter still does a pretty good job, but when he offers his insight on things, I tend to find it annoying.

Yes he's a creep but be carefull kicking him to the curb

I agree Ben is a creep but if the league can take back a dog killer who actually served prison time then someone accused of sexual assault who hasn’t been charged or convicted should be given a chance.

The NFL is giving him a chance.

Should the Browns trade for him – if the Steelers are too moral to keep him then yes the Browns should do a deal.

Comparison is not good. As you say, Vick served time for what he did — he was punished is now getting a second chance. Also, as much as I despise dog-fighting, repeated rape (as alleged) of women is a lot worse. A lot worse. Not even comparable.

by TheDriveStillHurts on Apr 21, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He's only guilty of being a creep

Again it is alleged he committed sexual assault. Accusations can’t ignore the fact that the legal system is based on innocent until proven guilty.

Vick was convicted of dog fighting which got him the same punishment from from the league so the comparison is valid.

I hope no women – or anybody else takes this the wrong way – but I disagree that this is “a lot worse”. Both behaviors involve breaching the trust of a being that is in comparison, defenseless to the will of a stronger being. Both are equally deplorable in my book. by Spidey on Apr 21, 2010 5:40 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

This is my thinking.

If they get the 8th pick, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them trade two first rounders to St. Louis for Bradford.

In fact if I was St. Louis, I would jump all over that deal.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 21, 2010 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

They would have to give up more than that. A second rounder too?

There goes that WR and OL they were planning to get in the first 2 rounds (if my plan follows through).

Next year’s first is comparable to this year’s 2nd. So we would need to sweeten with at least another second and possibly a 3/4.

You see it in every draft.

Teams trade their first round pick the following season for a second rounder this season.

It is how Seattle got two first rounders (Bronco’s pick from Alphonso Smith pick 37 in ’09). Carolina traded their first round pick this year for the 43rd pick last season (Everette Brown) to San Francisco.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 21, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

at the risk of getting into a value argument, a second round pick is never as valuable as a first rounder. I think thats a mistake on the part of any front office that values a lower pick one year over a higher pick the next year.

I’m not saying I agree with the sentiment, just that is my reasoning why the Steelers hypothetical offer would be greater than ours.

I have made it known many times that I would do the R2→R1 trade in every case, even if McCoy/Tebow were still on the board.

In light of some of the other actions and comments from Rooney II I think it is highly unlikely ROFLberger is on the Steelers’ roster for this season. No one showed up for Ben’s apology statement from the organization and Rooney II said he completely approved of the commissioner’s actions.

I have to say that I’m a bit surprised to hear the trade talk. I just seems odd that the Steelers would be ready to jettison the guy who won two Super Bowls for them with anything short of a conviction.

Do you really think they trade for Leftwich just for 4-6 games of “insurance”. They could have gone much cheaper by keeping Dixon, Batch and a low draft pick or any number of 3rd stringers in the NFL. On the other hand, it only cost them a low draft pick for Leftwich.

I think I just had an argument with myself.
