Coye Francies, the forgotten man?
With all the talk about the Browns secondary being terrible and needing players, the one name you never ever hear is Coye Francies. I thought he showed potential in the pre-season last year. Im not saying he should start and I know know he lacks top end speed, but I would at least see him get a shot in the nickel. Can he be worse than Brandon McDonald? Just from the little I have seen it looks like he has better ball skills. I also wonder if he is still in Mangini's doghouse for the fight in the locker room last season. He would also probably be a better option at safety that what the Browns ended up with last year.

Maybe he is that bad. I personally just haven’t seen enough of him to know that. He didn’t look that bad in pre-season, but that is only pre-season.
and I guess if he is that bad why is he even on the team? If you are going to put Mike Furry on defense before you even think about giving this guy a shot than cut him.
He’s the type of player you keep an open mind about, but cannot expect anything from. Maybe he secures himself a position on the team, maybe he doesn’t. We’ll have to wait and see. I would put his ceiling right now, without getting into transitions to safety, as the #4CB. I don’t see him outplaying McDonald or Brown.

Brown for sure. I just see McDonald getting burned a lot. Fair enough though. As you said, wait and see.
Yeah, well, with a 4.63 40 I’m not confident Francies can keep up all the time either. That’s why I say that. McDonald has played well in spurts, but has been very inconsistent.

McDonald’s 40 was similarly slow, if I remember correctly.
There is no reason Francies shouldn’t be able to outplay McDonald. My guess is that he couldn’t digest the playbook last year.

there is difference between game speed and timed speed. a lot of guys are gamers and have game speed but not timed speed. When i watched the small amount of tape I did on francies, he didn’t seem to get beaten. granted, it was a small amount but he seems like the kind of guy that has better game speed than timed.

keep in mind furrey has started at safety for other teams before, its not like he had never done it before.

Maybe it’s been so long since we’ve had “good” players at these type of positions that we start tending to overestimate a player’s potential based on their preseason effort. I was high on Francies too at the time, but time and time again most of these guys receive initial hype and then fall off the face of the earth, never to be signed by another team.

You have some weird recollections of the past. Plenty of people are skeptical of any 6th round pick.
Don’t you remember? We were all hailing Francies as the next Deion Sanders while the great Rocland was the only one who knew his true value. Good thing we have his unlimited wisdom here to help guide all of us ignorant fools.

I was speaking of all the players collectively. But regardless people were very high on Francies, very high actually. Weren’t you the one saying you were intrigued by Coye because of his size (despite him only being 6’0)

There are 3 DBs I would release before him.
