Cleveland Browns 2010 NFL Draft Day 2 - Open Thread
It's Day 2 of the 2010 NFL Draft, and after going through the motions of round 1 last night, it's time for the Cleveland Browns to tackle rounds 2-3. This is where Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert need to make their biggest splash.
The draft begins tonight at 6:30 PM EST. Teams will have 7 minutes to make their selection in the second round, but only 5 minutes to make their picks in the third round. Here are the picks the Browns hold heading into tonight:
- Round 2: No. 38
- Round 3: No. 71
- Round 3: No. 82
- Round 3: No. 92

Is he related to Colt McNugget? Ha! Someone made a funny joke in another thread. You see, that person, the person who made the funny joke, what they did was they took Colt McCoy’s name, and then altered it slightly, in a manner which indicated he is of relatively smaller proportion than one might expect for an NFL quarterback prospect of his acclaim. It was really quite clever, that joke. I enjoyed it. What with it’s humor. And cleverness. The joke.

I think his stats from 08 and 09 speaks for what he has to offer.
A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths --- Steven Wright
McCoy’s college numbers are far better than Brees’ (61.1 completion percentage, 37 games started), and those arm-strength issues aren’t as important in a league that’s gone to more of a short passing game. His closest statistical comp is also Rivers, and while McCoy’s college numbers might overstate his professional viability some, there’s a very good chance that he’ll be a Pro Bowl quarterback. If he does fall to the second round as forecasted, whichever team grabs him is likely to end up with a steal, just like the Chargers did with Brees.

Taylore Mays
Everyone was in love with him last year and wanted the browns to get him. Why not this year? He’s available, and we still need a safety.
He also looks more like a strong safety to me hard hitting mini linebacker who you don’t want on an island deep in your backfield. Unfortunately that clashes too much with the one safety we do have, Abe Elam, who’s cut from similar (if less exciting) cloth.
Why the need to trade up for McCoy? I can see the vikes taking Clausen but apart from that the guys ahead of us have bigger needs.

Coleman in the third
So, you don’t want to pick a QB now and have him wait a year, but wait a year to pick up one next draft. There’s some logic for yah.

Well, if he’s not you have to seriously question Holmgren even having the job. Why do you pay good money for Delhimme and then trade for Wallace if you still need a QB in round 2? Makes no sense. Basically people are rooting for Holmgren to admit he doesn’t like his own moves so far and is desperate to fix them.

I completley agree. I would love to see Delhomme to come in and led this team to victory but the Browns need a franchise qb eventually so if not this year then we can sit around and trade for one or draft one IN THE FUTURE

Getting rid of both lanced a festering sore there. The Delhomme acquisition is strange to me whilst the Wallace one makes so much sense. Stuck behind a perennial top QB and has proved he can pass adequately in the NFL (if not at Manning/ Brady level), is it too much to say that could have been like Houston getting Schaub from behind Vick?
Still, let us watch the QB maestro weave his magic.

Because both those QBs will be on the wrong side of 30 this season. Holmgren knew we needed to patch that hole immediately and he knows now that we’ll need to get a franchise guy at some point.
Delhomme is on a two year deal. Do you really think we brought him here to be the QB for the next ten years?
Holmgren doesn’t need to “fix” his own moves. He brought those guys in so that we didn’t have to both draft someone and start them right away. We still could draft someone and they could still win the starting job. We could draft someone and sit them for a year. We don’t have to even draft someone.
Those two signings gave us flexibility. Our options are now open, and we can take the best one we see.

"...maybe this year, there's no gorilla" - YoDaddyWags

The lack of talent at QB this year has caused QB’s that would normally be drafted in the 3-4 rounds (Tebow/McCoy) to become overrated. I’m praying we stay away from QB until next season’s draft.
McCoy would not normally be drafted in the 3rd or 4th round; that’s just false.
by Buckeye Brad on Apr 23, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly, you think he has second round talent? The fact that he is a QB means he will get drafted prior to when his talent dictates he should as it is, but this year’s draft is weak at QB, so he’ll go even higher.
Please, check out these stats. Tell me how often you’ll find a QB who puts up numbers like that in college.

As said above, this is completely false. Making that declaration, even without getting into specific players, is akin to stating that the tolerance for the COLLECTIVE appraisal ability of NFL decision makers is 1-2 rounds, if the only variation is positional depth.
To think that NFL minds would be swayed that much year over year is staggering. There’s no way that’s true.

To be fair, scouting report:
This is where Benn needs to improve. His pass-catching technique is poor and he often catches the ball in his frame. Likes to have the ball placed in a certain spot and doesn’t make many catches away from his body. Cradle catches too often. Drops too many easy receptions.

Its a pretty negative scouting report.
Another report reads:
Possesses strong and reliable hands. Catches the ball naturally away from frame. Times jumps well and does a nice job of climbing the ladder to high point the ball. Shows good body control and can make acrobatic catch away from frame. Struggles to track the deep ball on occasion.

"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Perhaps the Browns thought that their success rate in lower rounds would be similar between free safeties and cornerbacks once Berry was gone, and ended up just taking BPA. I feel pretty confident they’ll pick up a good safety in round three, or trade back up into two to get one.
Traditionally, solid-to-good safeties can be found in later rounds and don’t have a tremendous impact on what you can do defensively vs. CBs, this is true.
If I am coaching the D, I just love having an all-pro safety.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I’d be more inclined to believe Haden could play both positions than Thomas. Haden has already changed positions once (from qb to corner) and he’s more physical than most corners.
Dawgs By Nature -- where Hitler, apparently, 'did some good things'.
I think the move to S would be much more of a stretch. Sure he would excel in coverage, but against the run, having him at S would be similar to putting a small WR at TE, IMO.
but he can also add on pounds to his frame. he is a bit under 5’11’’ and almost 195 pounds. this is pretty stout for a CB and he is a CB that plays the run well and likes to hit. he can easily put on 5-10 pounds and still have elite speed and play FS like polamalu. granted, I want to keep him at CB, but just playing devils advocate to the point that he can play there.

Smith retracted and said the pick was unanimous. Said the only dispute was that some in the room felt Wilson had better Change of Direction ability, but everything else was in Haden’s favor.
I would agree with that assessment—Haden isn’t quite as fluid as Wilson. But I didn’t think Revis was all that fluid, either.

I’ve heard Gocong might be slated to play inside. How likely do you think it is that he or Veikune move outside?
It seems to me that both can rush the passer, with Gocong having more success in that area vs. Veikune. Of the two, I’d probably put Gocong on the outside. Both are big, strong guys without elite straight-line speed, but I’d say Veikune is a little more agile while Gocong is the better pass rusher, which is why I would do that.
At this point, though, if either turns out to be a solid player for us it’s a bonus.

How is this not obvious
We do not need to trade up and take McCoy. He is an average QB prospect at best. People forget that there IS a draft next year, and next year’s QB class is incredibly. Why waste another pick on second or third tier QB (like Charlie Frye and Brady Quinn). The best guy on the board right now is Sergio Kindle, OLB from Texas. He is a prototypical 3-4 pass rusher which we desperately need. I would gladly give up a 3rd rounder to move up to the top of the 2nd round and take him.

yep…and locker is still a big question mark IMO. who in 2011 is proven? locker may be the most proven and that is in a way scary. imagine if people talked about bradford being a first rounder in 2008 after his rookie 2007 season? that is what it is like when people talk about luck, a RS Sophmore, after one Decent season.

Everyone thought that this was going to be the deepest QB class ever.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 23, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Where do you get that from? Last time I checked, a talented QB with shoulder problems, a little bitch in clausen, guy who needs work on his throwing motion, and undersized QB from texas = not so great of a class.
We mean last year and before the start of the offseason. With Clausen, Bradford, Teblow, Mallet, Locker, Snead and McCoy…all thought to be first round talent
by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 23, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Right, my bad. Either way though, the fact of the matter is this class is not so great. I would like to see us draft defense as much as possible and go QB next year. I think it’s about time we put a defense out there that can, dare I say it, not end up as the one of the worst 5 in the NFL.
I agree. My entire mentality was that we take a QB in the first, and surround that guy with offensive talent like a RT and WR, RB. If not, then focus our entire draft on the defense. So since we went CB in the first round(cry), I think we should be going for safety, pass rusher and DE with our next picks.
And it is funny how this QB class went from being the best every to one of the worst in recent memory.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 23, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions
We honestly have no idea what next year’s class will be like. So much is going to happen between now and then. That shouldn’t affect our thinking one bit.

Once again, this just isn’t true. Next years draft class will include:
Jake Locker, Christian Ponder, Jerrod Johnson, Case Keenum, Jerrod Johnson, Ricky Stanzi, Pat Devlin, Greg McElroy.
And thats not even including possible Juniors.
by gentryholdem on Apr 23, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions
and what makes you think any of them will be as good as mccoy or clausen by this time next year? what if they aren’t?
Clausen is a tool and McCoy has been overrated due to lack of talent at QB in this draft. I would loe to wait it out until next year.
Ricky Stanzi?!? Pat Devlin?!? These guys are better than McCoy and Clausen — are you kidding me??
And, yes, many things will happen in the next year which can change the prospect rankings. That is most certainly true.
by Buckeye Brad on Apr 23, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, you only had to go 6 into the list to find fault. So shrug. Plus no early entries on the list yet. Here’s a question for you Buckeye. If Terrelle Pryor shows consistency with his throwing motion would you rather have him as a late first rounder next year than anyone currently available?
by gentryholdem on Apr 23, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions
No, I want him to stay in school for 4 years and have two seasons where he looks good passing the ball. I am also interested in how he looks if Posey leaves for the NFL before he does, because Posey is sicknasty.

McCoy/Clausen interest at top of round is lukewarm
If Holmgren feels the same way, could draft BPA and use pair of 3’s to trade back into mid-2nd round to grab one.
You are reading my signature.
I don’t want them to draft a QB in the second. Chad Jones, Nate Allen, and Taylor Mays can possibly be starting safeties. The Browns need starters now, not 2 years from now. Use a 3rd on a QB.
I really like this idea. Michael Smith says we might be looking at safeties with our second pick. I like Nate Allen in there, our defense could be really a strength next year for us.
"Smokescreen."
Maybe we’ll take McCoy with out first 2nd rounder then trade back into the late 2nd to grab a safety.

McCoy had more TD’s, same number of Int’s, a MUCH higher completion % (70% for McCoy to 61% for Brees), and more yards in fewer attempts than Brees. And McCoy’s rushing statistics were much better, too.
Not to mention the fact that McCoy won more games as a starting QB than anyone in college football history, for whatever that is worth.

Big difference with Brees. He had a much better arm and was a better overall QB coming out of College. Dont forget however it wasnt until his 4th season that he had a decent year and it wasn’t until he got to N.O. (with actual receiving threats) that he became an elite QB.
You don’t think McCoy could make an impact? Look at Sanchez. He sucked in college. Even Pete Carroll called him on it. Like Buckeye Brad has said, you won’t know unless you take a shot at a guy.

They have a starting QB, they don’t have a starting safety. I am of the belief that the QB should be one of the final pieces. Plus the QB depth in next years draft is supposed to be much better. Why draft a back up QB is you have a starting safety there? A back up for this year, at least.
Also, Delhomme had 1 bad, (horrible), year after a solid career. Everyone has written him off, but there is no reason he can’t give the Browns a couple solid years. There is just more pressing needs for the second round pick. People get too enamored with Quarterbacks.
I’m not writing him off. I was actually glad to see them bring in a vet like him. Why not get Colt and have Jake show him a thing or several. As long as those things don’t involve throwing interceptions.

You don’t want to blow a high pick on guys you otherwise don’t like but are so desperate for their position. Some freak combination of Seneca and Delhomme will be acceptable – better than a.) not building in the high rounds in our many other positions of need and b.) getting stuck with a (potentially) unworkable, sucky quarterback. If you miss on that pick you are screwing yourself terribly.
You seriously think we are poised to make a Super Bowl run?
Let Holmgren build this thing the right way and we can have 5-10 “win now” years in the near future.
And no, I don’t care how long you’ve been a fan or how many losing seasons you’ve had to sit through. There’s a right way and a wrong way, let the Big Show do it the right way.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I didn’t say we were primed for the Super Bowl. We’re far from it, but if we make a move that gets us 3-5 more wins than we’ve gotten in the last 5 years (sans 07) I’d welcome it.

Sure, but I think improving the long-term status of the team is 100x more important right now.
I would not make that move to get 3-5 more wins right now if it meant mortgaging the future (i.e. trading our entire draft for Sam Bradford).
We have enough holes that a few of the guys we pick should be able to contribute right away (i.e. in nickel/dime packages as extra DBs or pass rushers) or start right away, AS WELL AS being primed for bigger roles later.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I think McCoy can do both. He’ll come in and play really well and be our QB of the future

"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I think people are giving too much credit to Holmgren. I understand the “there isn’t much i can do about it so Ill go with it” mentality. But there have been too many FO screw-up for me to believe that every move a FO makes is for the best of the team every time. I’m willing to bet that if one of us who follow football as a second job were in these execs positions, we’d probably do just as well
by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 23, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions
The one thing he has that none of us could touch would be experience, which I think is important. I do think he knows quite a bit about football and will do better than any of us, though I think a few of us could surprise and not tank an NFL team.
That said, what I was referring to here is that Holmgren has and would potentially have access to the player that we don’t have. They’ve been able to interview McCoy, talk to him, talk to his coaches, they’ve been able to watch him in private workouts, they will be able to know exactly how ready he is if they draft him. We do not know any of that.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein

Using a 3rd round pick on a QB in this draft would be a waste.
Once again, why are so many people against drafting a QB because he won’t start right away. Who care?!?!? If he becomes a Pro Bowl QB in three years and leads us to the playoffs who’s going to care that he sat on the bench in his rookie year? Why MUST we draft somone to help us this year; we’re probably not making the playoffs anyways so why does it matter?

We can debate whether next year’s QB class is going to be deep or not. Right now it looks like it will but theres a possibility that it wont be. What we do know is this: The 2010 draft class is a very strong class overall, but one of the positions where there is not that much talent is QB. Why take a position where the talent is weak when there are other players available that would be mid to late first rounders in an average draft (with our 2nd pick).
If other positions are so strong, then gues what . . . there will be good players at that position available in the 3rd round. There won’t be any good QB’s available then.

The Browns backfield as of right now is Hillis and Davis. Neither Harrison nor Vickers signed their tenders a Jennings may have punched himself off the team.
I’d like to see Anthony Dixon in the 3rd if available. Maybe Hardesty.
Vickers and Harrison pretty much have to sign their tenders. Or they can just miss out on lots of money and give other teams a big reason to lowball them when they hit FA (aka career suicide).
As for Jennings, who cares.

I want a QB in the second round. If one gets to us, awesome. If one doesn’t, keep building the roster around the QB.
As much as I love McCoy, I wouldn’t shed a tear if we get Jimmy instead. As I see it right now there are 8 players available that I really like so we are in a great spot.

by superbacker56 on Apr 23, 2010 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions
My point is that you can’t plan for every contingency in advance. If somebody wanted the Browns pick, they would have called the Browns. Generally, trading down is initiated by the team that wants your pick. You can have an idea of who might want your pick, you can feel teams out about whether they might want your pick, but you can’t know the exact situation of your pick until you are on the clock.
Don’t you think that Heckert and Holmgren have done their homework?

his skill set is similar to that of Earl Thomas (though somewhat worse but still starting S caliber):
shorter, fluid hips, can play S & nickel CB & trail position, makes up for smaller stature with physicality, ballhawk, good awareness in coverage
where he differs for Thomas is his injury history and lesser speed
by the way, I was looking up at walterfootball and he gave the San Francisco 49ers an F with anthony davis and a D with Iupati. I completely disagree. I am starting to tune out walterfootball because it is very single minded analysis that goes more by what HE likes and cannot comprehend the strategies of other teams. it was obvious to me that SF wanted to be a smashmouth team and they drafted well for that.

-Like is already being said, dude hits hard. Real hard.
-He’s got a great football mind, especially when compared to a player like Taylor Mays, who’s pretty stupid.
-He doesn’t have great cover skills, but he’s got good instincts to the ball.
-I wouldn’t be too concerned with durability. He missed five games last year, but was a sturdy player in all other aspects of his career.
