NFL Draft 2010: As Third Round Comes to a Close, Cleveland Browns Take OG Shawn Lauvao
With the 92nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected OG Shawn Lauvao from Arizona State. With the departures of offensive guards Rex Hadnot and Hank Fraley in the offseason, adding to the depth of our tremendous offensive line sounds fine.
It's impossible to project whether Lauvao is starting material one day, but many teams end up finding some solid linemen in the middle rounds. If Lauvao ends up panning out at right guard in the future, maybe we go after a right tackle in next year's draft.

Have you watched any tape on Campbell. He was a combine monster but not a very good football player. I like this pick. RSS aren’t you a Carolina Panter’s fan now?

Are you saying this because all of the mock drafts on the internet said so? I am curious why 32 NFL teams have let him slip so far, perhaps they know something we don’t.

You are allowed to have your own opinion. I was just wondering what during his three years at Maryland what made you think Bruce Campbell was any good? Or was it his performance at the combine? Also I was serious, aren’t you going to become a Carolina Panther’s fan now?

I don’t know much about him, but I assume people think he’s good because he was projected to go in the top 10 in some mocks.

I think that was based on his performance at the combine rather than his play during actual football games. I am happy with our pick in this spot.

Maybe he only becomes fans of the teams AFTER (or if they were winning already) they start winning with the ND players, you know, ever since the Quinn fallout.

He was good in the regular season and he has a very high ceiling. I know his injuries drop him, but people seem to be blasting him for doing well at the combine, which makes no sense.

Of course you are allowed your opinion. But yet again, the Browns Scouting staff locked onto an explosive athlete who can play multiple rolls. This kid can play on either the left or right guard spots and he can certainly fill in at Right tackle if we need him there. We solidified our line with this pick. And our line was already pretty strong beforehand. Now we have the potential to absolutely dominate for the next 5-7 years with Thomas, Mack, and Lauvao as our anchors.

Hey, at 6’3 315 he certainly looks the part of an NFL guard. Lets hope this kid can learn from our veteran offensive lineman and become a solid starter. Also, hes polynesian, so you know Mangini likes him.

Thanks for posting the numbers, was curious. Looks like a solid enough build. Knowing our staff, I imagine he is better at run blocking than pass blocking.
Someone posted vid of him on the draft thread. He’s looks big, but not fat.

he is a solid pass blocker in technique but a better run blocker. he is just a pure mauler with a mean streak that can dominate. he isn’t very athletic which is why he is an interior guy, but also limits his effectiveness on pulls.

For me it relies heavily on how the safety turns out. I don’t know much about him, but I really wanted a safety in round 2.
Very physical. I’ve looked at the OSU Rose Bowl game 1,000 times (slight exaggeration) and he sticks out as a hitter. He will be the future Abe Elam.
Sheldon Brown can play free safety if need be. I like T.J. Ward a lot as a player; not sure about in the 2nd round, though.
I hate Oregon’s defense.

A little off subject, but I’ve watched the game several times as well. (Probably about 4-5.) The entire thing was available for streaming on ESPN for a while. Such a great game.
Back on subject, I’ve very high hopes for our secondary. I also really really like Rob Ryan as our DC.

whats the difference in responsibilities between LG and RG? i really don’t know and I would rather have him replace a floyd womack than Steinbach.

Usually, LG is more mobile while RG is more of an in-line run blocker.
Depends on scheme, depends on a lot of things. LGs are usually better than RGs. Similar to OTs but to a lesser extent.

Yep, but I’m really wondering what’s up with Campbell. You would think an athletic freak would at least notch a project pick in the third round.
Sometimes there are drug tests or something else that could cause a player to fall that just aren’t circulated to the public right away.
Or a health issue. Something might have turned up with his knees which would be a common rejection at this stage.
by gentryholdem on Apr 24, 2010 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions
I asked this in the live game thread. Rufio mentioned that while he has awesome raw athletic ability, he lacks the actual skill to play the position well.
There is something to be said for “raw athletic freak” vs “football player.”

I’m not saying he is terrible in terms of technique, etc., just that the way he played didn’t match up with his freak athleticism.

If Lauvao ends up panning out at right guard in the future, maybe we go after a right tackle in next year’s draft.
In which case, we end up with the best o-line in the NFL. I really like the direction our organization is going in.
An argument can be made, if Lauvao ends up starting at guard next to Mack, that we are the best offensive line in football. Especially considering the last four games of last year. They are doubling down on that dominance.

Not what we quite wanted or expected. But , that’s every draft in every city every year.
There’s a reason we’re not paid the big bucks. This is purely for our entertainment.
I’ll start by taking my hat off to H2M! It takes pros to get two other solid players prior to their favorite.
Joe Haden: The best and safest pick that could’ve been made under the circimstances. We now have a secondary that should be able to compete with any one in the division.
T.J. Ward: Don’t know much about him so I’ll remain alittle skeptical until we see him at game speed. Thought Major Wright or Reshad Jones may have been better options. But, if this kid comes on as advertised , no one will care much for comjng up the middle of the field on us.
Montario Hardesty: I’ve watched every game this kid played this year and I’ll tell y’all that Tennessee wins only 4 games tops without him! This kid’s a game changer and as about as humble as they come. Y’all gonna love him! We should now have a 2,000 total yard backfield with 80 or so receptions to boot.
Colt McCoy: Again , thought there was larger needs and better choices at other need positions but if the guru likes him and has this much faith in him, I digress! The kid’s a proven winner that played behind a mediocre line for three years running and still was in the trophy race all three years. And he’ll be learning the pro game from one of finest overachievers in the game of the last decade.
Shawn Luavao: The top rated off guard in the draft. This pick may have to be the most crucial of all the picks so far in my mind. H2M seems to have nailed it! We now should have the best OL in the division and maybe the conference!
With god’s grace over these kids and they all come to work as expected , we’ll be having fun in December again! We cannot base this draft only on the kids we got but also the moves H2M made prior to set them up for success. There’s a game plan and their sticking to it!
Man , it feels good to have some pro’s running the show again! Haven’t had this since maybe 1990. Rejoice and hold your breath Browns fans , got a feeling this is gonna be a real nice ride!
