Have fun discussing the final day of the draft! I might not be here until noon, which may be in time for the sixth round.

Hey B.Y., Any thoughts on the WR’s that are still out there. Briscoe should be gone by the time we pick & Mike Williams looks like trouble. What about Carlton Mitchell or Mardy Gilyard?

by badrat on Apr 24, 2010 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

We should stay away from any WR named Mike Williams.

Gilyard is ok. Don’t know much about Mitchell. There is a bunch of good WRs left out there. I do like Titus Young (WAC homer). Not sure if he’ll even be drafted though.

Titus

Titus Young is still a BSU Bronco this year…next year, though, would be awesome to see him joi the Browns.

Here is a list of needs and player I hope we consider today:
Eric Norwood LB
Mardy Gilyard, Blair White, Mike Williams WRs
Myron Rolle, Kurt Coleman, Kam Chancellor, Barry Church S
Everson Griffin, Corey Wooten, George Selvie DEs

Like your list for the most part- really would like Rolle but not sure Mike Williams fits our SAT mold. He was suspended in 08 and quit the team in 09

Saw Barry Church quite a bit over the past few years. He is always around the ball. Would love him in the 6th

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Apr 24, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Ummm, nothing was a bigger reach than tebow at 25.

by superbacker56 on Apr 24, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

well, it depends how you define “reach.” tebow was gonna be drafted by buffalo in the 2nd round so if denver wanted him they had to find a way to trade up. however, i dont think anyone was looking at drafting TJ Ward till at least the 3rd round, probably the 4th

by RyanBr on Apr 24, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

You can’t know that.

by Matt Y. on Apr 24, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

obviously, NONE of us know anything. that’s why these are draft “projections”

by RyanBr on Apr 24, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

a “reach” is all about value. The Bills drafting Tebow in the second would still of been a reach because Tebow is not even a second round talent. Ward, was a bit of a reach but nothing close to Tebow.

by superbacker56 on Apr 24, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The Broncos had Tebow in for 6 hours on Monday and watched him on the field and at the chalkboard. I think McDaniels might have a better idea than you.

by Matt Y. on Apr 24, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I have seen some people that said ward was a mid to late 2nd round talent…is it that much of a reach then to pick a guy 15 picks early if he is your guy and you can’t trade?

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Apr 24, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

But this whole talk about “reaches” and “steals” is sort of silly. First, we won’t know until they get on the field and play. Second, the way we’re defining “reach” is “someone who went way ahead of where the media and bloggers in their mom’s basements thought he should.” The NFL guys thought differently, and they should know better than us.

by Matt Y. on Apr 24, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

which is to say, beyond the top 20 or so, discussing reaches and steals is an exercise in futility.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 24, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly…and every analyst and scout has a different opinion…though i heard none say that alualu should have been that high (but i heard from some and read a couple sites that had ward as a solid 2nd rounder)

I’ve repeatedly said I like him as a coach. I like the discipline he adds, I love the accountability he enforces and the organizational structure he displays in every detail, from OTAs through the 16th game.

I’ve had two complaints: his handling of QBs and his poor 09 draft. Since he’s neither a QB guru nor a personnel man, and since we’ve added one of each, I think he can succeed.

Fair points. I want to see how the QBs are going forward, I am starting to believe that the failure of handling the QBs was a failure of the QBs themselves.

by emily522 on Apr 24, 2010 12:52 PM EDT reply actions

I like his hands, but he has very mediocre speed (mid 4.6) and got a lot of separation b/c of the offense that BG ran (which was still the urban meyer spread in a form I believe). I just don’t know how he can create separation in the NFL and his ability to beat the press.

I think Naaman Roosevelt is a MAC receiver with more upside. he has more quickness, vertical agility, and speed. He has more of a chance to create separation than Barnes in the NFL, IMO.

I like that article on Haden posted by noise above. I didn’t know he came into college as a QB and had never played corner. Even with that he NEVER allowed a TD pass in 40 starts!?! He also could have played WR but didn’t because he would have been behind Harvin. So looks like one of those Patriots-like versatile players broad game knowledge and outstanding athletic and learning ability.

in the 6th round, you are not usually drafting to fill a starting role, but for depth. we really only had 2 guys who wouldn’t give me nightmares for months if they played safety. they were elam and Adams. I don’t want adams as more than a backup though. sorenson is pure ST. assante is likely a backup SS who is a monster too on ST and can play on D fairly well for a backup

ward is a FS or more of a hybrid FS/SS. so is elam. he is not a guy with terrible range at SS, and is pretty balanced.

by bross09 on Apr 24, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Elam isn’t a FS at all. He is more of a run stopper.

by TheRealSlimShady on Apr 24, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

elam can cover a good amount of ground in zone coverage for a SS and is above average in man. He has a high motor and hits hard…he is similar to assante who is a FS but can play either FS or SS in the pros. you don’t have to have that in the box safety and that pure coverage safety. if you have 2 that can do both fairly well, it gives you versatility.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Apr 26, 2010 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Elam is better coming forward. Unless he takes big steps forward (which is certainly possible), he is below average in any kind of coverage.

I agree with this. Elam I feel is very good keeping things in front and reading and reacting. I don’t think all of our problems at safety are solved, but I am not too worried about both elam and ward in coverage…espcially since our corners will be much better which means maybe less pressure for the safeties to need to cover over the top to cover up mistakes by guys like McDonald.

I dunno if he is gone or not, but if he is, it is purely on ST. if he is gone, that means the browns had only 2 safeties on their roster and you usually want to have 4. I think thats is mainly why they got asante…depth.

From the NFL’s website

Asante was a productive, three-year starter for the Cornhuskers. He has a good combination of strength and athleticism for the safety position. He doesn’t have ideal height but makes up for it with toughness and aggressive play. He is a solid reactor but tends to be more productive as a run defender than vs. the pass. He doesn’t have natural leaping ability when going after the ball in traffic and appears to have average hands to make the sure interception. He is a willing run-support player who is usually a solid open-field tackler. Asante has limitations that likely will relegate him to a backup role and core special teams contributor.

According to nationalfootballscout,

Carlton Mitchell: No. 2, WR, 6-4, 212

Carlton MitchellAP

Mitchell is a big, long-armed wideout with a supreme athletic skill set for his size. He showcases an impressive initial burst off the ball with the straight-line speed to consistently run by corners and stretch the field vertically. He’s a powerful route runner who’s tough to knock off balance and bring down after the catch. But he isn’t the most natural receiver and is still learning how to break down and cleanly get out of his breaks. He has a tendency to round off his routes when changing directions and struggles to gather himself in jump-ball situations. Mitchell isn’t a natural plucker and will struggle to adjust and come up with the grab. Still, he possesses an immense upside and looks like he could develop into a legit No. 1 wideout at the next level.

He was even able to match up on the WR as a CB at times. I love this pick – I honestly believe he will be better than Ward.

by realmccoy on Apr 24, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I also watch the Big 12 mainly when it comes to college, and I was always impressed with him.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 24, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Really like the bottom half of the draft. Assante was a heckuva a player on a top notch college defentse. The WR looks like a specimen, and the DE looks good and is a perfect positional play. My only disappointment is the 2nd round. We had to give up 3 players for 1 on Hardesty and I really do not think the safety will contribute much.

by realmccoy on Apr 24, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Kiper compared Mitchell to Brandon Marshall in terms of what kind of WR he profiles as. Another tall WR for the Browns.

I don’t think it’s quite that bad.

They brought in a lot of nice young offensive talent, and their cornerbacks were good value for the 5th and 7th rounds.

by Matt Y. on Apr 24, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

ESPN complaining that Rolle is being downgraded because of his “commitment” is a joke. They need to look in the mirror for propping up his status higher than his actual talent warranted.

ESPN sucks. Hand’s down.

NFLN dude.

Bummer. I love watching their marathons of America’s Game and Top 10 best (enter football subject here). And their version of SC is great. Especially when Rich Eisen is the host.

Like what we did today.

I think Geathers is a great fit for us. Massive size and he is lean. Anyone who can carry 290 and look skinny is a beast.

I have no problem taking more DB’s. Our defensive backfield was an absolute joke last year. We had a WR start for us at times. Injuries happen and now we have three DBs to throw against the wall.

Ward is deemed a reach, but I think if he can stay healthy, he can end up being a good player. Watching him on tape, he has a physical nature about him and doesn’t seem to mind sticking his nose into the fight. Maybe it is just wishful thinking, but the guy reminds me of Brian Dawkins. Maybe it was the green uni’s.

Mitchell seems like he is a very good value, and adding some talent on the outside is always a good thing.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 24, 2010 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

ward was really the only reach and it was maybe only by a round at most. we got guys a round or 2 later than projected too at great values.

i don’t think anyone is sold on matt moore. they would have kept Delhomme if the price hadn’t been so high.

Anything else happen? I saw Pryor was 8-12 at about 9YPA, with Guiton also looking good.

Any young guys stand out? Any of the bigger DEs/DTs look good outside of Simon, Larimore, and Heyward?

DBs outside of Torrence/Chekwa?

Speaking of late-round QBs, I’m a fan of Sean Canfield, the Saints’ pick. I’ll keep an eye on him but for the next several years he’ll only get on the field if Brees is injured, and only then if he can win the #2 QB job.

Also, Jevan Snead has to be regretting his decision to come out after his junior year. Undrafted! I wonder why he came out.
