Love this. No BS, no controversy. He sits for 2010. End of story.

Thank God. No coin flips, switching each series, or any other form of controversy. What a difference an experienced developer of quarterbacks makes.

Agreed. I like this. Let him sit for a season or two and then give him the keys.

Did we expect anything less?

From a guy that has coached great qb’s. You don’t even have to be great to know that throwing a rookie qb in the mix is rarely successful. Besides, I hope Jake surprises everyone this year.

by navycavsfan on Apr 24, 2010 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

I just like that he came out and said it. Basically, “hey everyone, before we start, get it through your heads – no starting the rookie.”

Cheers to that! I like what Holmgren and Co. has done so far.

I like the idea of keeping him on the bench the full year and eliminating any controversy, but “no plans to play him” and “shouldn’t play before he’s ready” don’t necessarily mean he won’t play at all.

A la “How the hell did we end up with GRADKOWSKI as our quarterback?!” ?

by BrownDawg1409 on Apr 25, 2010 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Sigh. I really hope we don’t end up with 461 injured QBs again. Give or take a few.

by Simmsinns on Apr 25, 2010 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Seemed like about that many, didn’t it? I like the plan here and the firm words, but it’s a tough league and anything can happen…..

That's just noise.

by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Apr 25, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I love that he sits.

Not only is there no controversy, he actually gets a year to rest his body. He started four years and did take quite a few hits. He gets to learn the offense, get tutored by Delhomme, Holmgren and the staff and come out ready to try and get the starting job in 2010.

by talonk on Apr 25, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

Might even be 2012…….

by BrownDawg1409 on Apr 25, 2010 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Smokescreen: We’re moving McCoy & Delhomme to fullback (never too many fullbacks), Vickers to right guard, Seneca to WR (wonder why we didn’t draft a WR higher) and Brett Ratliff is going to be the future QB of the franchise.

We’ll use Haden a little on Wildcat plays — when he is not playing safety — move Elam to corner and Wright will probably play a little WR too. Ward is going to be a hybrid OLB/Corner/FS. Not sure where Hardesty fits in yet — may just shine Hillis’s shoes.

Haden honestly might be decent in the wildcat. He did play QB in high school.

by TheRealSlimShady on Apr 25, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed that he might be decent. But I think it is entirely redundant because we already have Cribbs and Wallace. There would be no point in having Haden play offense as well.

by Simmsinns on Apr 26, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking that, but I think that’s year 2 in the NFL at the earliest. He still needs work on CB-specific things.

by rufio on Apr 26, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’d say let him work exclusively on playing corner. Seneca Wallace should probably be our primary wildcat back for the time being. With Cribbs (and his limited passing ability) moved out into the slot to take the jet sweep or bubble.

Love that this was stated right off the bat. Holmgren is handling this QB competition/orientation much better than previous FO. I personally would never start a rookie QB. I love that he sits a year and learns from Delhomme the nuances of studying for an NFL game. I really hope that Colt comes out in 2011, as advertised from college and then some, and gives us our franchise QB that we desperately needed. I am excited to see what our offense is going to look like next year.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but let’s not forgot the sudden importance of Seneca Wallace. Mccoy will be learning the offense through him. Hopefully he’s a better teacher than player.

by The naome40 on Apr 26, 2010 9:15 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

true, but i think delhomme, mangini, holmgren will also play a significant role in helping him along. holmgren has said he won’t be coaching, but to think he isn’t going to be helping along a QB prospect seems unrealistic. you make a good point, but i wouldn’t think that much of the load is going to fall on wallace.

by Dawg Nuts on Apr 27, 2010 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Delhomme will be his primary mentor, along with the coaches. I also think that Colt, while he may not get "coached" by Holmgren, will be spending a good deal of time with him learning things. I just don't see Mike completely removing himself from the thing he gets the most enjoyment out of....teaching QB's.

Delhomme being a good guy suddenly matters.

Aside from mentoring Colt, Delhomme’s other primary responsibility this season is to throw enough picks so we can be in position to draft A.J. Green next year.

Are you kidding? Let’s at least wait for the season to start and see how we play before talking about tanking the season to get a high draft pick.

Let’s never talk about tanking a season for a high draft pick.
