I think this definitely makes it more likely that Detroit takes Ndamukong Suh. Even though they should probably take Russell Okung.

How?? is Sims a LT? Sims is a guard? I really don’t understand the logic here.

The Lions still like Jeff Backus. If they draft a LT they would probably move him to left guard. Now Rob Sims will play left guard. Backus could still move positions but It is a little less likely.

Yea, I don’t get why they like Backus so much.

I think it may affect the chances then, but not significantly…nothing where I would be having to drastically changing my strategy for them if I was mocking them in a mock.

well they would be smart to protect their investment in Matthew Stafford. Suh might be tempting but #2 money when you are already paying a king’s ransom for Corey Williams at the position is just… ludicrous. I predict they do the smart thing and take Okung. Tampa takes a DT and then washington and Kansas City both take tackles. Probably T. Williams to washingon (fits zone blocking scheme well) and then Bulaga to KC (pioli-kirk ferentz connection). Hopefully Seattle takes G. McCoy or Clausen, Pete Carroll thinking that he can get Taylor Mays with his other first round pick.

I agree. it is the money issue plus protecting their investment. I say this has an affect on their chances of taking Suh, but I agree, they will probably still take Okung.

I could be wrong, but I don’t see KC taking Bulaga, or even any offensive tackle at all in the 1st. They have Albert at LT and O’Callaghan at RT, both promising players. They have Waters and Lilja at guard, so they won’t be moving Albert inside. To draw an analogy, it seems that we have a greater need at WR, for example, than they do at OT. I think the predictions that they’ll take Bulaga are like the predictions that we’ll take Dez Bryant, or maybe like continuing predictions that we’ll take Haden at 7 now that we’ve added Sheldon Brown.

They have bigger needs on defense, and the BPA will be Berry. Or they might take McClain. Pioli has connections with Saban, so why isn’t that mentioned as often as the Ferentz connection?

by Matt Y. on Apr 11, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The reason people speculate as such is Pioli is known to prefer positional value than top rated player at times. He apparently was even quoted as saying “You know how I feel about drafting safeties that high.”

A lot of organizations would take a tackle over a WR in the top 10 even if tackle wasn’t necessarily a need.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 11, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

this.

In addition, Brandon Albert did improve later on last year, but he still was really shaky in pass protection overall. The Chiefs have a lot of money tied up in Matt Cassel, and Pioli knows it would be wise to add a ‘franchise’ left tackle to more adequately protect his investment in Cassel. Moving Albert in to guard and perhaps moving one of his guards to center. You could look at it like upgrading 3 positions for the price of one.

You think he’d be that transparent?

by Matt Y. on Apr 11, 2010 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

He was pretty transparent last year selecting a mediocre talent (in my view) in Tyson Jackson because of his position over Aaron Curry.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 12, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

transparent meaning I knew ahead of the draft that the Chiefs would not draft Curry, I don’t remember the circumstances though.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 12, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Many in the league view him as a right tackle anyway, if reports are correct. And isn’t right tackle, like safety, not traditionally considered high value in the top 10?

by Matt Y. on Apr 12, 2010 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I probably wouldn’t take one there, but I don’t think the Chiefs have as much money tied up in the line as we do. If they could get two bookends who were both highly paid but they didn’t have to worry about OTs for the next 10 years, it might be worth it for them.

If this post is accurate, Pioli also drafts by need and is averse to risk. This points to Berry.

by Matt Y. on Apr 12, 2010 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but a large part of that post discusses positional value and the rationale that certain picks are less likely to bust like OT and DT. The author then goes on to contradict himself (or at least convince himself) that Berry is less risky as an individual ignoring the position he plays.

Again the easiest example I can point to is taking Tyson Jackson (in my book a huge reach at 3.)

by Roger Dorn on Apr 12, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t put it past them to take Dan Williams. NT would have a lot of positional value, and NE took 3 DL in the first round.

Isn’t Waters like 45?

The Chiefs took Jackson last year way earlier than anyone expected him to go, I wouldn’t put anything past them.

Yeah, they are a bit of a wild card. They might even take Dan Williams at #5.

See this link:

His teams have taken nine players in the top 13 overall picks and seven were defensive players, including five from the SEC. Four were defensive linemen and three of those were from the SEC.
Pioli’s teams have drafted seven players among the top 13 since 2000. All seven played defense: Tyson Jackson, Richard Seymour, Jerod Mayo, Shaun Ellis, John Abraham and Ty Warren. That gives us a pretty good feel for how things might play out (even if the Chiefs do not take Berry, a safety).

Just looking at the comments at Arrowhead Pride, McClain and Dan Williams appear to be more popular than Bulaga. Not that they know what Pioli will do any more than we know what Holmgren will do, but they ought to know their team better than us.

From Arrowhead Pride (these made me grin):

If we draft this clown instead of trading down or getting Berry… my cat is going to get punched in its hind leg.
I will become a fan of men’s figure skating if we draft Bulaga.

by Matt Y. on Apr 12, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea, the Chiefs fans really want Berry and I think they are quite nervous about Pioli going for positional value.

by Roger Dorn on Apr 12, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

This.

The chiefs fans know Pioli is a heavy positional value guy. He isn’t about having tons of elite players he is about having the “right 53.” If the Chiefs stay at #5, I would be incredibly surprised if Pioli doesn’t draft a left tackle. The idea is: If he isn’t a QB, LT or Pass Rusher, then he isn’t worth top 5 money.

Also, Pioli has been known to be a big believer in building his team inside→out, and getting his lines squared away first. All of this points to drafting an offensive tackle. I wouldn’t put it past the Chiefs to trade down, however, perhaps selling off Clausen just like Mangini with Mark Sanchez.
