How is Jake Delhomme doing? I hope he works out for you folks. He is very inconsistent from year to year. If he comes out the first couple games and is on fire, you can expect a real good year. If he does poorly, you might as well write letters asking them to bench him, 'cause it won't get better. You wouldn't be able to tell it from his QB rating. That stays pretty consistent. His strengths are making key plays on 3rd down and late in the game. That's where you can tell how your season will go. He can be one of the best, or one of the worst. It just depends on if he's on that year or not. He was the driving force that made us the Cardiac Cats. Hopefully we won't need his late game heroics anymore, 'cause we'll be up by a couple scores with our improved passing game.

Regardless of how Jake does, we will have to shut him down when we play you guys. I'm sorry, but that's the way it has to be. Hopefully he won't get injured.

Oh, and you can't go by the preseason.

Preseason means nothing with that guy. I’ve seen him look like Peyton Manning in the preseason, and then do little in the regular season. You have to wait ’til the regular season starts to evaluate him.

stuff 'bout stuff.

It was a nickname for the Panthers that started in 2003 when Delhomme took over and they won a bunch of real close games to eventually get to the Super Bowl. It kind of carried over into Delhomme’s whole career. Like I said, he can either be really great in the 4th quarter, or really bad. But, if he’s on this year, just sit back and enjoy it ‘cause it’s quite a ride seeing him bring a team back from the brink of a loss. One of my favorites was the first game in 2008 against the Chargers when he won it on a 14 yard pass with no time left on the clock. If he does something like that the first one or two regular season games, you’ll know it’ll be a good year.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Just the fact that you offer this as an option means it’s an improvement for the Browns at QB.

I could be wrong, but I think last year was a fluke. Delhomme has had more good years than bad years. He’ll probably do good. But, I’m telling you, if for some reason he starts out bad, call for his head! Don’t put it off, ’cause it will not improve.

stuff 'bout stuff.

Plus, I trust our FO way more than our fans to make the decision on a QB. Even myself.

They spent a first round pick on a defensive end last year, Everette Brown. He has added muscle and is expected to be a fierce pass rusher in his 2nd year.

I hesitate to mention them, ‘cause they’re both rookies, but they also drafted pass rushing specialist Eric Norwood this year. As well, they drafted Greg Hardy who experts compare to Julius Peppers when he’s healthy.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Jun 19, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I liked Norwood coming out.

Greg Hardy will never amount to anything in this league. Doesn’t seem like he likes football all that much.

Millions of dollars has a way of motivating some people. He whooped the other defensive linemen in agility drills during OTAs, and was doing his best to hang in there with defensive backs and receivers in sprints back and forth down the field. That’s all I can tell you.

millions of dollars also has the opposite effect on many people. and sure he did great in agility drills and sprints, but that doesn’t say a lot about his love of the game.

Reason for that is simple. I can find DE like Hardy anywhere.

Now finding a QB with the physical tools like Russell is nearly impossible.

Give me the rare player who needs motivation over the ordinary player who needs motivation/better health.

by Bernie19Kosar on Jun 20, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Ordinary? Hardy? He’s one of the most physically gifted defensive ends to come out of college since Peppers. His health is the only problem. I don’t know about motivation. I don’t know him well enough as a person to make that assessment. Get him into an NFL physical training program, only use him on 3rd down pass rushing situations for a year or two, and he should become a good end barring any unfortunate injuries from his limited playing time.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Jun 20, 2010 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. He has a similar size-speed combination but not the same. even when healthy, he just didn’t seem as fast off the edge. plus, he doesn’t have the best hips out there…

All us Panthers fans over at our page think he is a mini-Peppers when he’s at peak health and fitness. We’ve seen Peppers play, a lot, and a lot of us are SEC fans, since we live in the area, and have seen Hardy play. He’s gotten a little out of shape after all his injuries, but if the Carolina strength and conditioning folks can whip him back into shape, he’ll be a force in his 2nd year. I don’t expect much his rookie year. For goodness sakes, he was projected by Sports Illustrated to be the number 1 overall pick a year ago before he continued to get injured.

stuff 'bout stuff.

a few things

a) I don’t regard SI’s draft predictions that highly, especially ones for a year later.

b) there are a lot o What ifs with him. Yes he has some talent, but he needs major work with the strength and conditioning coach

c) when he is at his peak, he has some good physical skills, but nowhere in the realm of a Julius Peppers…maybe more in the realm of an Aaron Kampman or Aaron Schobel.

by notthatnoise on Jun 21, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, CBS sports compared him most closely to Julius Peppers on his draft prospects page, and I think there are a lot of similarities. That’s all I can tell you.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Jun 21, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

If you can’t find a draft preview source that makes ridiculous comparisons to current NFL players and absurdly high projections, you aren’t looking hard enough.

Look, Hardy may become a very good NFL player but the chances of him doing so are not very good. Heck, the chances of any DE becoming as good as Peppers was/is are not very good. Sure, Hardy may have a chance, but 6th and 7th round guys that we’ve never heard of have a chance too.

If Panthers fans are expecting or counting on Hardy to become the next Peppers, I’d bet heavily that you all will be disappointed for a couple of reasons. One, Hardy just doesn’t have that big of a chance to become a star. He wasn’t the most physically talented DL in his class, let alone in the past few years. Two, Julius Peppers is/was really, really freaking good. That’s a high standard to live up to.

Saying Hardy could be the next Peppers is like me saying Colt McCoy could be the next Drew Brees. Yeah, it might happen, but I sure as hell ain’t counting on it.

by bross09 on Jun 21, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve seen Peppers play more than you guys. He’s not godlike. He disappeared for a whole year once for goodness sakes. He really only makes 2 or 3 superb plays a game. I’ve seen him many times get blocked one on one by a tight end. Other times I’ve seen him bull rush a 300 pound lineman right into the QB. He’s extremely inconsistent, but all you guys see is the 2 or 3 really great plays on ESPN.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Jun 22, 2010 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I really don’t know what to say to this. If the best DEs dominated OTs on every play, this wouldn’t be a passing league and someone would have racked up 50+ sacks in a season already.

"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein

by rufio on Jun 22, 2010 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, so then why hype Peppers up like he’s the most dominate player ever? He’s a great pro player, but there is not a huge margin between pro players. It’s not college or high school. I do not think Peppers’ talent is untouchable, and I do think there are a lot of similarities between him and Hardy.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Jun 22, 2010 4:45 AM EDT up reply actions

peppers is one of the most talented DEs of this decade. thats pretty untouchable.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Jun 22, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Because those two or three great plays he made every game were what made him so good. Normal DEs can’t make those plays.

If you ask us, there is a huge difference between pro players. We’ve had all of the bad ones so we’d know. I never said Peppers was the most dominant ever, just very good. Hardy has a long way to go before he can think about being in that category, and it is likely he will never make it there.

I actually agree. Peppers had what I considered two down years in a row before really turning it on again as a new contract was within reach.

by Roger Dorn on Jun 22, 2010 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions

If you are trying to say he didn’t play hard for a year because he wanted a new deal/out of Carolina, that’s probably true.

If you are trying to agree that Hardy comes close to being likely to play like Peppers in his prime, you are out of your mind—which is basically my entire point.

However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that he is a physical freak.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Jun 22, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Peppers is one of the 5 best DE’s in the NFL. (Mario, Freeney, Allen, and Cole or Tuck are the others.)

Greg Hardy is an injury prone, fat, middle of the road DE. Wanna know how I know that? Because he lasted until the 6th round of the draft.

If he was anything more, he would have been taken earlier. Don’t give me the injury excuse either. Plenty of players with longer and nastier injury sheets were drafted much higher.

When it comes down to it, Hardy had a great Soph. season, and he took steps back every season afterwards. If you think that puts him on the level of Julius Peppers, then I bet you would be very interested in Chaun Thompson.

by Bernie19Kosar on Jun 22, 2010 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, ‘cause no player taken late in the draft has ever amounted to anything I guess. It’s hard to stay in shape when you have two leg/foot injuries in two years, especially with another injury the third year. He’s even said himself he’s not 100%. It’s pointless to discuss it any further. I can either believe my eyes, fellow Panthers/SEC fans, CBS sports experts, and Sports Illustrated, or I can believe the opinions of a few Browns fans who have limited knowledge of Peppers and Hardy. I will agree to disagree.

stuff 'bout stuff.

by silver82blade on Jun 22, 2010 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m sure Panthers fans are really objective about one of their players.

And just because some guy on a website claiming to be a draft “expert” says something doesn’t necessarily make it true. You can find draft experts to say almost anything you want about a player.

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 22, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, ‘cause no player taken late in the draft has ever amounted to anything I guess.

Chances are minimal. Chances of him being as good as Peppers? Even smaller.

It’s hard to stay in shape when you have two leg/foot injuries in two years, especially with another injury the third year.

Then TJ Ward, a second round draft pick, shouldn’t have been able to stay in shape. Same for Montario Hardesty. Same for Javid Best.

I can either believe my eyes, fellow Panthers/SEC fans, CBS sports experts, and Sports Illustrated, or I can believe the opinions of a few Browns fans who have limited knowledge of Peppers and Hardy.

I don’t see how it doesn’t: people (Browns included) clearly view him as a longer-term project.

He isn’t a first round, immediate face of the franchise/starter type player, he isn’t the 2nd round short term project (Kolb).

Nobody who needed a starting QB immediately wanted him for that role, and everyone who needs a QB would be willing to spend the draft pick on a guy they like.
