Back in high school there was a kid who wrestled at 128 lb. who would cut weight something fierce. Friday night was the match, then on Monday he would weigh in before practice around 142. He would spend the rest of the week cutting. Typically, if he was within 3 lbs. on Thursday he was safe because he could count on the trash bag, the steam shower, and Gatorgum whenever he had free time on Friday before weigh-ins.
So, 13 pounds is not difficult, especially with the energy Cribbs has.

exactly what I was thinking. I’ve watched pretty skinny guys lose 10lbs or more in a weeks time for wrestling in high school. They would eat ice cubes only all day. Not sure how they functioned during the week, but then after weigh-ins they would devour everything they could eat to build backup.
A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths --- Steven Wright
I actually went a little overboard one time. I was a sophomore and I wrestled 152. i normally weighed around 155, so making weight wasn’t a problem, especially cause i was jv and nobody really cared what we weighed.
one week, our 145 got hurt, and my coach told me if i could get down i could wrestle varsity. I dropped 10 pounds in three days. right after weigh ins I downed 2 of the large powerades. during my match the kid had his arm really tight around my stomach and i threw up. after cleaning up, i got an escape to tie the match and then went on to win in overtime.

I can’t remember what high school came to wrestle with Parkersburg South (my high school), but one of them was in the middle of a match when a brown spot appeared on their ass. Slowly but surely the brown spot got bigger and bigger. Came to find out afterwards the kid literally crapped his pants while wrestling one of our guys. We still joke about that to this day, 12yrs later.

The problem is that Cribbs will need the water weight. For his body to be in the best football shape possible, they want him to trim down by losing fat and maybe some muscle; sweating out weight won’t help him on the football field.
It isn’t like he has to weigh in before camp and make a certain weight (unless this is a contract thing). Losing 13lbs of bad weight by then is a lot for a guy his size.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Exactly. Cribbs isn’t weighing in for a wrestling match, where the only weight loss that matters is the total number. Cribbs is trying to reduce his body fat, which is a much more prolonged process than shedding the water retention. This is about altering the body in a semi-permanent manner, not temporarily reducing his total weight.
Art Modell gives me a hard one
I’m thinking for Cribbs is a self motivating thing. I’m sure he might have put on few extra pounds with all that good eatin’ money he just picked up.
Also it’s twitter and he probably just wants his fans to know he’s dedicated enough that he’s always going to work hard to put himself in the best shape to play.

He could burn 13 pounds of muscle easy, not in a couple of days but that may even be possible. A pound of fat is composed of around 3000 calories, and muscle burn fat very efficiently and at a great rate. So by him being composed of a lot of muscle, he could burn that he he worked intensively during his work-out. Just for comparison a normal person can burn 3000-4000 calories during an intense night of basketball.
And you’re making the assumption that he’s trying to alter his body composition. It’s possible he could have put on weight during the offseason, and needs to lose weight regardless if it’s water weight or fat. Playing 13 pounds heavier than normal is a huge difference from what his normal weight is, especially for his position.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jun 23, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Losing water weight will not help Josh Cribbs on the football field. It might kill him, if that’s what you would want.
If there are an extra 13 lbs of water in him from chugging gallon jugs of water that he doesn’t need, he’ll pee it out and lose the weight. Otherwise, you kinda need water to function in the August heat.
If there are 13 lbs of fat (to safely be lost) on Cribbs’ body, I’d be very, very surprised and disappointed. They certainly weren’t on him last year.
And you can burn as many calories as you want, you still have to go into a deficit to actually shed the mass. If you play an intense 4 hour session of basketball and then go eat dinner, many if not all of those calories go right back into your body. So it would require him to do all that extra exercise and then not fuel himself for workouts, which would hurt his performance.
And yes, Cribbs probably does have a lot of muscle mass which will burn more calories just by being there, but for each pound of muscle he’s burning 35-50 calories per day. Not the absurd amount he would need to burn to drop this weight in a matter of days. And again, he would have to starve himself to get into the kinds of deficits he would need because eating just replaces those calories.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I might be confuses about the weigh-in at camp. Does he just need to show up at his target weight, or does he need to maintain the target weight throughout camp?
Also, how is the target weight established? I was under the impression that it is a maximum weight so that the players do not come in to camp fat and lazy.

I don’t think anyone outside of the Browns really knows. If it is a contract thing, they might weigh him at a check in and then give him a bonus or not based on his weight. If this is the case, he can dehydrate himself like crazy to make the weight and then go get an IV or something and be ok for camp.
If the coaches said something like “you look flabby, we want you in at 200lbs”, it might be a different story where he has to stay at a certain weight or they want him to keep the weight off thinking that it will help his speed.
Obviously, being in shape and chiseled would be great for Cribbs. My worry is that by setting a weight number (and not something like body fat %), we could possibly detract from Cribbs’ best attribute: being a hard, tough, physical runner.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
I would imagine that the Browns nutritional staff has prescribed an ideal weight for Cribbs to play at. The staff would look at body type, position, BMA, etc., to arrive at a number that fits each player.

Playing 13 pounds heavier than normal is a huge difference from what his normal weight is, especially for his position.
Unless he pumped creatine into his veins with a syringe, he is not carrying around 13 pounds of water weight that was not there before.
By burning fat, he is attempting to alter his body composition. He will have to be very dedicated in both his diet and exercise, although that certainly isn’t foreign to him as a professional athlete. Still, it is a prohibitive task to lose approximately 6% of your total weight in that time frame, especially when that weight is fat. Carbohydrates are the first to go when you exercise, so he will have to monitor the composition of his food with a careful eye.
It’s nothing that can’t be done, but it is not going to be easily done.

Santa Teresa H.S. San Jose CA. Lots of kids played multiple sports at once.
There were quite a few football players who wrestled too. It was just conditioning, the season didn’t start till after football was done. But training started midway through football.

Yeah, but at all the schools I know about, if you’re on the football team you’re excempt from wrestling or basketball conditioning/practice as long as that sport is still in session. I can’t believe that a school would make a student attend practices for two different sports in one day. I’m sure that has to be against OHSAA (or whatever state you’re in) rules.

My high school did. You had to go to both practices. Wrestling conditioning started in the fall right along side football. Players were pushed to choose one sport or the other by coaches, but if you wanted to do both, you had to go to both practices/conditioning.

Again, this isn’t a weigh-in where he must reach a certain level. He is changing his body composure, not shedding water retention.

That’s the problem though, fat needs to be lost over time. Each pound of fat has ~3500 calories.
That would mean Cribbs would have to burn ~45,500 calories in two days while eating nothing. And then not eat more than he burned the next couple of days.

Two-year contract with DirectTV finally finished, and they wanted a lot more a month, so we got a lower end package (Choice 150) but didn’t have to sign another contract. It doesn’t include the NFL Network, or a handful of other decent channels. I wouldn’t recommend this package to anyone.

i don’t live near cleveland, so without sunday ticket i’d only see about 4 or 5 browns games a year; with it, i see them all. its worth it to me to pay the extra money. it costs the same as someone from cleveland going to 1 or 2 games live. to me its a valuable investment.
since dish can’t provide that to me, i don’t care that its only $25 a month.
You’re exactly right; if you don’t get the Browns on your local channels than 2 DVR’s does absolutely nothing for you. I have no idea why SB thought his argument solved anything, but that’s what he does.

But he wants the Sunday ticket to watch the Browns every Sunday, so it doesn’t matter how many DVR’s he has or any other benefits if he can’t get that. That’s the point, and there was no reason for you to proclaim “Check and Mate” after your argument as if you just won something. You didn’t.

Coming from a (soon to be former) DirectTV customer:
NFL Sunday Ticket is insanely overpriced, and I don’t that’s an exaggeration at all. I cannot imagine paying that much for it unless I was making 6+ figures, especially when you can watch streams online of every game for free.
Also, I used to have Dish, prior to switching to DirectTV, they both screw you the same way… once you’ve been with them long enough, they jack up their prices, at least in my area.
It’s only cheap while the introductory package lasts.
Isn’t that the way all providers are?
