OJ Atogwe

Does anyone think we should be going after OJ Atogwe? He is a FS with solid size, 5 years experience, and is a Ball Hawk in the secondary. I know he was hurt last year, but he is one of the underrated top safeties in the league. . I think he would team up nicely with our young Draft picks. We also wouldnt have to worry about Abe Elam signing his tender.  Has anyone heard any news from the Browns camp? Let me hear your thoughts.

They are Apple products. The Macs are Apple’s line of desktop and laptop computers, is what I think he’s getting at.

I misspoke. I meant it all.

I use Mac for Macintosh. Which is then half of Macintosh Apple, their old brand name.

I don’t see the point now. I’m imagining maybe Brown would make the transition to S, and Ward better start being taken early in the second round. I would love to see Atogwe start over any of our safeties but if that was the case then someone would be a waste

by The Licensed Pessimist on Jun 3, 2010 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

Having Ward and Asante as backups wouldn’t be a bad thing.

what about abe elam as a backup?

by notthatnoise on Jun 3, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be great. But all of it is speculative since our FO isn’t really the type to go after an expensive FA

theirs nothing wrong with easing a 2nd rounder into the lineup. im sure he could learn from Atogwe as well.

I have a problem easing a high second rounder into the lineup, for the most part being an early second rounder shouldn’t need to be eased into the lineup IMO

Our draft last year disagrees.

I don’t think there should be a specific timetable on draft picks. Take the guy with the combination of the most potential and the most likely to reach his potential no matter if it takes him 1 or 4 years to get there.

by Roger Dorn on Jun 7, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If it takes a rookie 4 years to get to his ceiling, I doubt the coaching staff/GM that drafted him will be around to see it.

my thoughts exactly. 1yr to get to the field maximum in my opinion, ala Robiskie this year

In theory I agree, but I feel with a first or high second round pick(which is borderline first), if it takes time for them to be a contributory starter then you picked the wrong player. There are exceptions for positions and depth at the position drafted ie QB. But if that player is going to take a couple of years before having an impact then you should probably draft that position later in the draft and use your 2nd rounder for a more established player. Thats the way I think

by The Licensed Pessimist on Jun 8, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

but sometimes there are guy\s with more upside that are more raw and will crack the lineup later but could quite possibly be a better player.

Those guys should still get on the field at some point. Especially when we are talking about a linebacker. Even with the learning curve, Veikune should have been getting reps.

I am not as worried with Robo considering it is widely accepted that WR’s take 2-3 seasons to come around.

From the reports I have read he is solely focusing on ILB this year and is doing much better.

Right, it depends a lot on position. Running backs, D-linemen, and linebackers should be able to play right away. Quarterbacks and receivers are two positions with a long history of needing 2 or 3 years of experience before they really play well.

by Buckeye Brad on Jun 8, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

defensive backs also often don’t do all that well right away. first rounders do but guy after that don’t always play much their rookie year, though I still expect ward to.

by bross09 on Jun 8, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree and I bet these guys will get on the field. However, there will always be some guys who don’t get a ton of playing time. Just because you don’t make an impact doesn’t mean you had a bad season either IMO.

This is kind of the Rey Mealauaga argument this site has had before. I’d rather take a guy with higher upside than Rey that might not be quite as ready as Rey when they are drafted. While 4 years was a bit extreme, there are scenarios where it may take that long for the guy to blossom to his full potential.

by Roger Dorn on Jun 8, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

But whose to say that player “has more upside”? How is upside measured? I think that sort of talk is conjecture, all players have upside, some just have more immediate talent. There is no telling if that player who has to sit on the bench will end up being a better player down the line or not, while the player with “less upside” becoming a better player from on the field experience.

I’d rather take the guy who can start immediately with my first and high second. The guys taken in the later rounds are meant to sit on the bench and learn. If you end up with a guy who has to sit on the bench in the first round, that means you made a mistake in your scouting. Especially when there are players that were taken around his position who are starting.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Jun 8, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It is mostly conjecture you are right about that. It will also probably take a few years to figure out who was the better player, which is my only point. I don’t watch these guys enough to decide after one year if it was a good pick or not.

by Roger Dorn on Jun 8, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

when people talk about “upside” they are usually talking about physical talent. for instance, Gocong had many more college sacks than JPP, but you would be crazy not to see that JPP has crazy upside, even if he isn’t as good of a player right now.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Jun 8, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

not that crazy to not see “crazy upside”.

Football Outsiders has a new stat to measure how a guy will do at getting sacks when coming out of college. Its called SackSeer. It predicts JPP to be a huge bust by their calculations. I am not saying its 100% accurate, but they do make a good case.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

i read that article, doesn’t it only take into account things like total college starts and sacks?

No. It takes in measureables, workout numbers and other stuff like that too.

yeah…I don’t think it is 100% but it does have some interesting reasons why JPP will be a bust.

I dont see Brown moving to safety. He is better served at corner, whether he is the number 2 or the nickel. You need 3 solid starting corners now adays and thats why I would leave him at corner. I would love to see Atogwe starting at FS and Ward or Assante at SS. Sorry Elam, but you are expendable in this scenario. However, I agree with Roger Dorn. It depends on the money.

I’ve read that the frontrunners are the Rams and the Dolphins. Followed by the Cowboys and Vikings

It’s possible that this lack of interest means either a. Otogwe had 1 fluke season 2 years ago, b. he is still hurt, or c. he is asking for too much money

You Are Right On

I predict the biggest weakness on the 2010 Browns will be the FS position. It will hurt us in 2 ways. First, we will give up a ton of touchdowns on bombs and crossing routs. Second, they will be so bad in coverage, we will overrate our WRs.
