Cleveland Browns Sign QB Colt McCoy, G Shawn Lauvao
With Cleveland Browns training camp nearly a week away, the team signed QB Colt McCoy and OG Shawn Lauvao to contracts, according to the Plain Dealer.
- Colt McCoy: He received a four-year deal worth about $5 million. ESPN's James Walker notes that the average deal that a player receives at the spot McCoy is drafted is $3.275 million, stating that McCoy got the "quarterback premium."
- Shawn Lauvao: He also received a four-year deal, with his being worth up to $3.22 million. The Plain Dealer reports that he will receive a $697,000 signing bonus.
Now it's time to get CB Joe Haden, RB Montario Hardesty, and S T.J. Ward signed and everyone will be all set for camp!

I think the process will be slow…Just a prediction from what coaches were telling me from their observations.

Hopefully he won’t miss any camp. At the very LEAST he’ll be in by the time the veterans come in too.

I was trying to subtly reference what Mike Lombardi has said about Haden…I guess maybe you didn’t get it or didn’t read that article.

Sam Bradford will get the richest contract in NFL history.
Colt McCoy got 5 million over 4 years.
Awesome.
The way people have designs on other peoples´ money nowadays, maybe less riches is a blessing. Lets not forget that Mike Holmgren set the stage by allowing that he has never mentored a quarterback taken higher than the third round, dunce that I am I didn´t even begin to think that it may be a budget driven assertion. We´ll have to see if recession conformity expectations reward his frugality imperative.

Sam Bradford is still better though.

Most likely, but you never know who the best QB from a particular draft is going to be.

On a side note, here is some negative news:
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8193f4c9/article/former-browns-center-bentley-sues-team-over-staph-infection
I know this is the guy that they make fun of because he got injured on the first play of training camp. The article states that he almost succumbed to suffering, and that they seriously contemplated amputating his leg, in the staph context.
Along with the other staph victims he certainly has a case. I would allow for a challenge in regards to the potentiation of claims in the face of “establishing a premise”, that is: even if you had a hundred claimants does that stack the odds against finding proof in the fact finding mission. Don´t get me wrong, if they did indeed contract staph at Berea, no doubt pay them. Without a sample of the offending germ though, what are your chances?
Now you may ask, why is mooncamping adamant? Because I still believe in honesty, and with all the provocative half truths the media throws at us, you have to knock down at least a few. Stop hanging the pinata that is a scape goat, there´s not enough candy in it for the mob you´ve invited.

Starting in game 1? Very low.
In the rotation by game 6? Pretty high.
Pushing to start by the end of the season? Given what we have, it’s expected.
This is not a raw rookie. He has talent and smarts for the position. We should expect him to contribute at some time this season.
(note: I’m expecting the team to be eliminated from the playoffs around week 12, too).

Of course, I defer to Mooncamping on all matters related to the OL and necessary physical ratios for determining player placement and role.

Out of curiosity and because I don’t recall, what was the scouting on him before the draft? Where was he projected to go by the “experts”?
by TheDriveStillHurts on Jul 23, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
about 3-4th round from what I remember was where he was projected, so near the end of the third isn’t a bad spot.
one of the things in the scouting report that would lead someone to believe this is that he is a very intelligent player and had the intelligence to pick up stunts and blitzes. He played most of his career at LT but doesn’t have good mobility so is going to be a RG/RT.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
He was 2nd Team All-PAC 10 as a tackle in both his junior and senior years. I point that out as an indicator that he has been playing at a high level for a couple seasons+.
It’s also worth noting that Lauvao was born on this date…
October 26, 1987 Browns 30, Rams 17
Not a very pretty game for the offense, but it is a good example of how we hope to see the Browns win games this season: force turnovers and protect the ball.

Just for comparison sakes, Lauvao was ranked as the 11th guard prospect by NPO (including tackles who would make transition). That would put him around 5-6
Walter had him as the 7th ranked guard (not including tackles who would likely make the transition). They projected him to go in rounds 4-5.
And Lauvao is in fact, very raw
I think Lauvao was the 4th pure guard taken
by The Licensed Pessimist on Jul 23, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Hmmm, good points about the rankings. Though, isn’t the transition to guard from tackle a little easier? I also consider “raw” to be someone with the physical numbers (i.e., looked good in Indianapolis) but little on-field performance. Lauvao has 2+ years under his belt.
CFN has him ranked at guard as a best of the rest
All told, a third round OL pick should be expected to contribute in the first season – even if he was considered a reach when we draft him.
"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge..." C. Darwin
Also, Draft Ace has him 7th, Mocking the Draft ranks him 5th and Draft Countdown ranks him 6th. So the 6th or 7th ranking seems accurate. However, I dunno how great the projection that he may go in the 5th round is. The latest I saw him mocked (and I checked several mock drafts I had read) was pick 120 and the earliest was 77. So i would say 3-4th round is pretty spot on.
Lauvao was actually the 6th guard taken…I dunno what you mean by pure guard because he played Tackle in college…But of guys generally considered to be a guard in the NFL, he was drafted 6th and most projections were 6th or 7th and late third-early 4th round.
I don’t know where you get that he is raw. He started 33 consecutive games to end his College career, the last half of those (about) was at Left Tackle. He was excellent at picking up stunts and blitzes. He has solid technique that could improve, but isn’t particularly bad (he has only been playing football for 4-5 years)…He is not extremely raw. I think of him as a more polished prospect with not huge upside.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
I appreciate Male Beauty
A lot of what I saw said he was big and strong but probably didn’t have the lateral quickness to play OT, where he lined up some in college. Having that versatility would have elevated his stock; tackle is seen as a much more valuable position.
I’d say late 3rd is where you start thinking about getting OGs who aren’t Iupati-like and probably can’t play tackle.
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Sean Lauvao

category winner on a losing team, thus the scaled down draft ranking prior to the draft. If he transitions well, you may want to move him up amongst those scouted guards in retrospect.
He played tackle in college. Which qualifies him as a scrappy line of sight offensive tackle in mooncamping´s book. Don´t know if that proposed versatility harmed his draft standing, most NFL teams want pure products at each position. All in all, great pickup.
That’s a bad picture, looks like he’s about to teabag, or take a dump on his own RB.
For the love of Joe Thomas.....

That´s funny. But I think actually he is taunting the entire stadium. So while teabagging is an inference to a man rubbing his testacles in another man´s face, you are right to the extent that it is indeed a male bravado posture indicating that he does have aforementioned acoutrements.
thank you for explaining the concept of teabagging.

MIDAS notes this as the second appearance of the word ‘testacles’ in the mooncamping canon. Some members believe this unique word to be a discomforting combination of ‘testicles’ and ‘tentacles’ but of course opinions vary.

I hope people look at Bradford/Tebow/Clausen in 7 years and think, “Damn. We could’ve had Colt McCoy.”
Not that I wish Bradford to be a bust. The other two…
We are all witnesses... to a traitor.
Did you hear that jackass Arron Goldhammer on ESPN Cleveland today? On top of the fact that I can’t stand his nasaly voice and lousy taste in music – he never has a good thing to say about anything in Cleveland sports.
Today he was bashing Robiskie and labeling him as a bust and already writing off Colt – because “3rd round QB’s are historically not successful”. I’ve already started compiling some facts that have a different spin to refute the “3rd round” thing – which is actually pretty accurate since 1999.
I’m looking at Colt as the 3rd QB selected in the draft instead of the 86th pick (?) overall in the third round. Strength of the QB class and team need at the position mean more at QB than other positions – especially when you think about the team having to pay the “QB Premium”.
Pretty interesting to see the differences year to year.
What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?
McCoy was the 4th QB selected
