harrison vs hardesty=hmmmm

i have to admit im a little confused on this topic. im reading all over the place that hardesty could start before harrison and to be honest this shocks me. Harrison showed true brilliance last year everytime he had a chance to shine....

Star-divide

Granted I have been a browns fan since I was 8 yrs old in 1980.....so I have seen the one two punch of the pruitts, mack and byner and so on. Harrison  has earned that starting spot as far as I'm concerned. Lets not forget about James Davis.....he kicked ass in pre season last year...many of you may not know that he is the guy that started over CJ Spiller for years.. Davis is very dangerous.....he needs a shot.

Really this is all a very good problem to have. I believe sincerely and unbiasedly that we have one of the top 6 or 7 backfields in the NFL...mark those words mybe even higher. Just saying I would be upset if Jerome didn't get his chance because he missed the OTAS. I dont believe that last year was a fluke....I am a die hard fantasy player and this is the first year since I been doing fantasy I can justify a browns running back in the  5th round!

When you ask “who should start” my response would be simply whoever is the best running back for our system. Plus the NFL doesn’t really have featured backs anymore so we will probably see all three getting carries.

I am also a loyal, lifetime browns fan but I would consider us running backs much closer to the bottom of the league than the top 6 or 7. Harrison does deserve some credit for having fresh legs and getting the job done at the end of last year. I would be much more inclined to say what made our running game so good was the o-line, especially the left side. I only wish we had a top 6 or 7 back to really give this team something for opponents to game plan against. Imagine Frank Gore, Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson running behind the line. I would even settle for LeSean McCoy or Shawn Greene two backs we could have drafted last year.

Fair point. While we are much improved at RB – we do not have a proven top tier back. There are plenty of carries to share for Harrision and Hardesty – and I think we have the potential to be a top 10 running team. But potential doesnt mean a darn thing.

Who should start? whoever is the best player. we don’t know that yet.

Well for God sakes, couldn’t we trust our “genius” to determine that!

by JimBrown32 on Jul 27, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

no we cant trust the genius

I must admit Mangini grew on me last year and by the end of the season i was a believer. But here is what he did that I can fathom. Think back to last years pre season. Richard Bartel had a bang up game i forget who they were playing but he was like 12 for 14, good yardage and a touchdown or 2. Despite the fact that Ratliff didn’t play as well he hadf history with mangini and he got to stay. Bartel would outplayed quinn or anderson last year. Jerome sitting out of otas may have got in his dog house…..food for thought

So did Elam, Roth, and Jackson. If they won’t be in the doghouse, I don’t imagine Harrison will be. I’m not saying Harrison’s job is safe, but it’d be kind of ridiculous to be that picky considering the status of the league right now and the number of RFA’s that held out across the league.

I’m not sweating the loss of Richard Bartel and I doubt many other Browns fans are either. Him playing well in one preseason game doesn’t mean he would have done it in the regular season. People need to stop getting all excited about performances in the preseason against backups — first it was Chris Jennings and now it’s Richard Bartel. Haven’t we learned our lesson from Ben Gay and Lee Suggs and Darrin Chavarini and every other player who was the talk of preseaon then never did anything in any real games?

by Buckeye Brad on Jul 28, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair, I’d probably exclude Suggs from that list. Agree with everything else though.

Dawgs By Nature - Covering the Cleveland Browns on SB Nation.

by Chris Pokorny on Jul 28, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Suggs had one good game at the end of his rookie season and a couple more good games at the end of his second season, but that was about it. He did nothing after that.

by Buckeye Brad on Jul 28, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d exclude him because those games came during the regular season, as few and far between as they were. Some of the other guys (Jennings, Bartel, and even Francies) received the praise just from the preseason.

by Chris Pokorny on Jul 28, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

That is true. I suppose I was thinking more about high expectations for players with little results, but Suggs at least had some good games in the regular season.

by Buckeye Brad on Jul 28, 2010 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

he was also injured quite a bit, wasn’t he? I seem to remember him playing well when he could.

Isn’t this the case with Harrison last year?

by The Licensed Pessimist on Jul 29, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Not exactly the same. Harrison has been in the NFL 4 years now and he’s had good games besides those three or four at the end of last year. But there certainly is doubt if Harrison can be successful over an entire season which is why the team spent a 2nd round pick on Hardesty. I don’t think anyone is saying that Harrison is going to be carrying the offense all by himself next year. The expectations for him aren’t too high, at least not from the Browns fans I’ve heard from.

by Buckeye Brad on Jul 29, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll say that my expectations for him are high. But all of you already know about Harrison and I…

In terms of running and catching the ball, Harrison has always performed while on the field. The problem has been getting/keeping him on the field consistently.

If he ran for 500 yards every 3 games (as he did at the end of last year) I would consider it a miracle. I don’t really see anyone predicting him to break the single season rushing record. 1000 yards, maybe. But 2000? That’s a little crazy.

not probable, but definitely possible. Harrison was only 150 away last year. I see both running backs getting at least 700 yards but neither one getting more than 900

I dunno, all it takes is one or two big games to take them over 1000.

by notthatnoise on Jul 30, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

thats true. Thats why I said definitely possible. I think it could happen, but I don’t know if I see our 2 main backs getting 2,000 yards. I think when i say 700-900 I am leaning much more to 900 and Harrison having at least as many yards as he did last year. I think maybe once Hardesty develops a bit more, we could see 2 1,000 yard rushers, I am just not sure if this is the year.

No lie

I tailgated last year with a dude wearing an authentic “game worn” Chavarini jersey. I asked him “what game did he play in?” He couldn’t answer me.

What does that MEAN - TO PLAY US OUT?!!?!?

I really love the optimism flowing from this thread. Let’s be realistic. Harrison, Hardesty, and Davis are ALL injury prone. So……Jennings, anyone?

One angry Cleveland sportsfan!

by JimBrown32 on Jul 30, 2010 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Jennings just isn’t that good. He might be as good as Davis, but I haven’t seen Davis in almost a year, and there is plenty of room to be better than Jennings.

Harrison, Hardesty, and Davis all going down at the same time would be a pretty rare thing to have happen, no matter how injury prone they are. If we have that kind of bad luck, we are probably done for the season anyway, but I would turn to Hillis and sign 2-3 free agents that are as good/better than Jennings.

No, no, no. Again words are being put into my mouth. I am saying we have a bunch of unproven injury prone running backs. We’ll end up with Jennings running the ball at some point. I am NOT saying Jennings is any good.

Hey JimBrown32, thanks for joining recently and commenting. If you look in the comments section, you’ll see how some comments are posted underneath each other and to the side, which indicates that person is responding directly to you. I’ve noticed that your comments always go to the bottom of the screen, so it’s hard to tell who you are replying to.

To take advantage of this feature (so that people know who your comment is directed at), hit the word “reply” that appears to the right of the person’s username. A comment box will then magically appear. You can test it by clicking the “reply” link to the right of my name, and then post a comment.

Thanks!

I don’t think it really matters who starts, considering I think they’ll be a ‘running back by committee’ team.
