There's really no explanation at the moment as to why the Eagles released LB Alex Hall on Wednesday morning. If you remember, Hall was part of the Browns-Eagles trade that brought CB Sheldon Brown and LB Chris Gocong to Cleveland. The Browns are probably too crowded at linebacker to bring Hall in again, and he never really seemed to win over Eric Mangini. With that said, he is on the market...

I remember them saying he would play LB for them which seems like a terrible fit from my perspective if he is in a 4-3.

I hope Phil Savage wasn’t the one that convinced them to trade for Hall in the first place.

The fact that they released him only a few months after signing him is indicative that it was very much a Phil Savage move.

Hurts his credibility pretty early on in his new job.

Phil Savage has absolutely no say in the Eagles organization. He was hired as a draft consultant for SEC players. As far as I know his contract ended at the draft and he doesn’t work for the team anymore.

This is a positive for the Eagles. I never really believed he had any input, it was more my weak attempt to take a shot at Phil Savage.

I will say that I know that Andy Reid knows what he is doing, so I would never be quick to judge a trade with the Eagles before any games have been played.

You could have said so much for Savage trying to get the band back together. Wait, nevermind.

Still, I can’t see a reason they would have even wanted Alex hall in this trade if Savage didn’t have input in some form.

Which is also a sign that it was a Phil Savage-influenced move. If the decision-makers in Philadelphia specifically sought out Alex Hall, they would probably not be so eager to part with him.

I don’t even know if Savage worked for them at the time. Hall was just a throw in. I imagine both the Eagles and Browns said hey while we’re at this other trade we’ve got a couple athletic LBs that we’ve pretty much given up on, why don’t we swap them and see if a change of scenery or system makes any difference?

The odd bit to me was that both Hall and Gocong seem like better fits for 3-4 OLB.

by Roger Dorn on Jul 29, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I always thought of Hall as a better 4-3 DE. Then again, we didn’t get to see him much.

Well, the line between 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE, and 4-3 SAM is getting more and more blurred by the day it seems.

Also add 5-2 SPUR.

I can't believe Cribbs was considered the second best athlete in Cleveland.

the question is, out of all the guys on our team that could be ‘throw ins’ (Trusnik, Costanzo, Marcus Benard) just at linebacker, they take the “Savage Guy”. And Savage was working for the Eagles at that time I believe.

Hall likely wouldn’t have been drafted without savage and savage has always been high on the guy and I just don’t get the eagles interest, even as a throwaway, without any influence or input by savage.

Agree. I really thought he flashed potential as a situational pass rusher. Kid came out of some podunk college and had 3 sacks as a rookie? Hope he catches on somewhere.

Yea I was a big fan a Hall. If any thing he was good on special teams. With mediocre linebackers I felt we really didn’t lose much when he came in to give rest

Eagles sources said at the time Hall was just a throw in that they decided to take a flyer on. He was longshot to make the roster before the draft and pretty much a lock not to afterward. A 4th and a 5th for Sheldon Brown was fair value. I still wish they kept him… but the Browns paid fair market value for Brown if you look at recent trades.

Gocong was probably just a throw in too as he wouldn’t have made the roster this either… Eagles ended up getting Ernie Sims and a rookie corner with the picks they got.

Have you guys heard your first Sheldon Brown press conference where he refers to himself in the 3rd person yet? Always awesome… Seriously, one of my favorite guys to hear talk in the NFL. I miss having him around!

We are just happy to have a cornerback who likes to tackle. We also put up with Lebron James for 7 years, so we are accustomed to third person speak.

He was simply a poor fit in a changing Eagles LB scheme

Wasn’t good enough in coverage in any way/shape/form to be a legit SAM and not strong enough to play as even a rotational DE. Also, he is an older, lesser version of Ricky Sapp from Clemson who we stole in the 5th round.
