Rolando McClain and the raiders just came to an agreement on a deal...by far the biggest for the 8th overall pick and the biggest % increase.

Three words: Rookie Pay Scale

by Simmsinns on Jul 29, 2010 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Yes. But how much a guy is asking depends a good deal on a couple of variables

a) the contracts of the guys drafted before and after them in that draft
b) the guys drafted the year before in the same draft spot

there was already some talk that haden may demand and possibly get a larger contract because of DHB. he will likely end up getting more just because agents would never settle for less in that situation. DHB was massively overpayed for his spot so may make Haden’s agent want too much.

McClain received I believe a 13% increase in the Max amount and a 19% increase in guaranteed money. Compare that to the 6% increase in Max and 11% increase in guaranteed money Eugene monroe Got and the 6 and 12% increases Derrick Harvey got…

Also compare that to the 15% and almost 21% increases DHB got respectively. These deals will inevitably influence the signing of haden in some way. Plus, I just wanted to include Al Davis being an idiot as usual…and found some funny SBN tags.

I believe he just means the NFL needs a rookie pay scale similar to the NBA’s. As in “even Al can’t eff this one up, let’s take the negotiation out of rookie contracts”.

Three words: Raider Contract Clause

I can't believe Cribbs was considered the second best athlete in Cleveland.

LBJ. Lying. Backstabbing. Jackass.

by SpecialBrownie on Jul 29, 2010 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

This is actually a double whammy because the Raiders had the 7th pick last season, using it on Darrius Heyward-Bey and, of course, rewarding him with a substantially larger contract than the previous year’s 7th pick.

Quite a leap from firm negotiations to communism,

AJ smith in SD must be Chairman Mao, because that dude is hard core. Told his left tackle and #1 WR take it or leave it. I’d bet my house that V.Jackson caves in way before Smith.

by Haden Dawg on Jul 31, 2010 4:54 AM EDT up reply actions

AJ is the man. He only caters to those who are all about football, the team, and the community. He took care of Rivers and Gates. They are full blown Chargers and do wonders in the S.D. area.
Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeill & Shawne Merriman are "ME" players. AJ is playing chicken with them and he’ll win. Merriman will most likely sign first and soon. McNeill is a coin flip. And I don’t think we’ll see Jackson play this year. He’s done as a Charger.

It’s not a lie if you believe it.

AJ Smith is an as*hole and the most over rated GM in football.

He may be an asshole, but the Chargers are contenders.

In the weakest division in the NFL.

What happens when they play a real team in the playoffs? Smoked.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 3, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

debatable whether it is the weakest. you could also say the NFC west (as a sidenote, these west coast teams need to pick it up, the worst 2 divisions are AFC/NFC west). Still, it is definitely a weak division and I agree with you.

If you want to say that the NFC West is weaker, fine.

But the Chargers get 6 wins every year by the division they play in. Sorry if that doesn’t make my socks go up and down.

The biggest thing AJ Smith ever did was the Eli Manning trade, which he was forced to do.

Under AJ Smith the Chargers have taken in the first round…

Sammy Davis CB, one pick in front of Nnamdi. Eli Manning, who was traded for picks and Eli. Shawne Merriman who was a Eli pick. Luis Castillio who has been good. Antonio Cromartie who was just traded for a 3rd rounder. Craig “Buster” Davis who has lived up (down?) to his name. Larry English who has really had a chance yet.

So, other than the Eli trade, who on that list is exciting? Cromartie? Maybe, but I think he was the Chargers version of Braylon Edwards. Who else?

I haven’t even mentioned the fact that AJ Smith is such an ass that he ran Marty off and hired Norv Turner willingly. If there was ever a sign that someone has lost their mind, hiring Norv Turner to be your Head Coach is it.

Then he suspended Antonio Gates for a regular season opener AFTER he signed a new contract. “Hey, thanks for ending your holdout. By the way, your suspended.” Great people person there.

Then he lets Drew Brees leave for NOTHING. You can say he was possibly damaged goods, and that is fair. Then the Chargers need to hire more doctors like the Saints. Phillip Rivers has been good, but he is no Drew Brees.

What about the total mismanagement of the Running Back situation? Even though LT would be 29 going into the 2008 season, AJ Smith decided to keep LT instead of Michael Turner, even though LT disappeared in the playoffs again. (By the way, LT has played in 7 playoff games in his career and he has averaged 47 YPG. In fact, the last time he had 100 yards in a playoff game was 2006.)

Yet, Smith extended LT and let Turner walk.

Drew Brees and Michael Turner. Maybe top three in both positions in the league. AJ Smith got NOTHING for them.

Now he is pissing all over Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeil.

He is an ass that treats people like crap. If he wasn’t playing in such a mickey mouse division, he would have been fired years ago.

I agree that smith is overrated by far and not that good of a GM. And trying to say whether the AFC/NFC west are worst is picking hairs (I think the NFC west will be much better in 2 years though). Smith is an average GM who definitely makes his mistakes and doesn’t deserve all of this praise.

They were one of the worst franchises in the NFL and are now a solid team under Smith’s helm. You may quibble with some of the first round picks and his attitude, but he has built them into a consistent contender.

He’s found them a lot of defenders in rounds other than round 1 as well. And for a while their backups could play for most teams.

I think the main reason they are contenders is because of the garbage division they play in.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 5, 2010 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

You gotta give it to him though, he had about a 4 year run where he was clearly the best GM in football. He has gotten cocky and fallen off a little since, but he was as good as rated for a while.
