Rule of 26-27-60 as a tool to determine QB success rate?
SI's John Lopez elaborates on a quick guide to predicting if a QB will be a success in the NFL after time in college, though not nearly as beautiful and factful as BK19's article on the subject.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/john_lopez/07/08/qb.rule/index.html?eref=nflg (I still don't know how to do that elaborate link title. :/ )
After reading this, I have to admit to feeling much better about McCoy's chances. After being thouroughly convinced (through aforementioned article) that McCoy's chances of being a quality starter were, at best, minimum. Yes, there are exceptions to every thoery and law, but it didn't seem likely.
However, after reading this article, I feel validated in my previous feelings that we may have found an eventual starter in McCoy as I'm sure that others might after reading it. I'm still for bringing him along slowly, but I'd like to see him get his chance in a year or two as an unquestioned starter.

It’s from a skit on De La Soul’s first album. Dante Ross, he’s a guy who worked A&R for a lot of hip hop acts for Tommy Boy.

I have seen every Colt McCoy snap at the University of Texas – twice. The character, work ethic, competitiveness, and accuracy are just flat off the charts. In addition, he has nice athleticism. Faster and Quicker that Tebow, better throwing motion – but nowhere near the Vick, Cunningham kind of athleticism. He reminds me of another Texan – Drew Brees. My only concern for Colt, and it is a big one, is his arm strength. Can he throw the out with zip? What makes me feel pretty good is the Holmgren would know if his arm was adequate or not. Wouldn’t he?
I think that Colt has enough ‘zip’ to get the job done. He might not have a cannon arm like Anderson did, but he should be able to get the job done quite nicely. This is especially true if he’s able to bulk up a little now that he’s in the pros. Maybe Quinn can lend him some of that EAS stuff. :)

Point taken. Let’s hope Cribbs never ends up on the cover of Madden.

McCoy IS the real McCoy!
McCoy will win games. The knuckle dragging drag queens from the rest of the NFL leaving him until 64th pick will soon be eating crow, probable by choice if their taste buds are as bad as their scouting ability. He won at a record level in college and will continue to do so in the pros. He is a Fran Tarkenton type of quarterback that just won’t allow the game to get away from him and will scramble, run, pass, and kick ass…and hopefully won’t do infomercials, like Fran, after he retires from what should be at least an equally elustrious career in the pros. I saw his interview with John Gruden and Gruden is a chump who would be coaching IF he wasn’t such an a-hole. McCoy can deliver, Cleveland just has to give him the chance [protection] and someone with talent in the receiving corps.
Good luck Cleveland I honestly think you guys deserve some.
All of the “formulas” for trying to predict QB success in the NFL are ok, but none of them have hit the home run and none of them ever will.
I love that Colt is accurate. I think accuracy is very underrated. I like that he has some athleticism. He isn’t going to Vick anyone, but he can run like Cutlet or Quinn; enough to be not totally useless as a WR in the wildcat and scamper for yards here and there. I like that he seems to have studied NFL QBs like Drew Brees. He seemed hungry and eager to work in Gruden’s special. I think his arm is strong enough. He didn’t throw deep that often at Texas, but he wasn’t really asked to throw deep all that often. I do worry a little about his accuracy when he has to throw mid-range routes and he has to throw before the WR’s break. This can certainly be improved.
None of this means he will succeed for us.

true.
but making this even worse is it’s a pretty blatant ripoff of David Lewin’s Career Forecast formula, but throwing in the Wonderlic for good measure.

I like that during his most accurate college season he still had over 9 YPA.

Here’s your homerun:
Of the quarterbacks available in any draft, the one or two who spend a significant portion of their careers behind quality offensive lines will be more successful than those who don’t.
