Great article.
I cannot describe the rush I felt when I was pulled from the JV squad and put into the nose tackle position one Friday night. After playing a series and slowing things down, I got my first varsity sack; it was the greatest rush I ever felt.
This man was pulled from the Practice Squad and sacked BEN ROETHLISBERGER. While I can compare, I would never be able to understand that feeling
I can't believe Cribbs was considered the second best athlete in Cleveland.

The LB corps is really shaping up to be a solid unit. I’ve said it before and I will say it again- it’s the best LB unit since the team reentered the league.

Let’s not get carried away. “Solid”? I don’t think we have any linebackers that are in the prime of their careers. Couple of guys on the downside (Bowens, Fujita), couple of guys that showed flashes on a bad team last year (Benard, Roth), and a couple of guys who never have been good/or are hurt (Jackson, Barton). Its still the weakest unit on defense.
Now, compared to the LBs of the last 10 years? I don’t know. We’ve had a lot of crap the last 2 years, but there were some decent units before that.

Dude, seriously. What LB shoved something up your ass?
In all legitimacy, you are far too harsh on the LB core.

I just think we are going overboard to call this unit anything but below average. There is some potential and a little experience. But, really, which LB is honestly expected to be “solid”. We’d all be happily surprised if any of Trusnik, Benard, Roth, Veikune, or Maiva turn into solid starters. Fujita, Bowens, Barton, and Jackson all have age/injuries to overcome and they weren’t ever too much above average to begin with.
I don’t think I’m being too harsh to point out the weakness of a team that has a lot of proving to do. I’m as optimistic as possible at this stage of the season, but if there is one unit that is going to fail us on defense, this is it.

I thought Roth was a solid starter at the end of last year. Bowens too, though I am willing to concede that he probably won’t play at that level again. I also think I am the most DQJ apologetic of everyone here, so I’ll lay off that one.
Assuming everyone were healthy and TJ Ward continued his promising play, I would agree that LB was our weak unit on defense. But one or two injuries on the DL and we turn into a pretty poor unit up front. Rogers isn’t healthy yet, and neither is Mosley who should be one of our better DL in passing situations.

Grossi hinted in his Sunday Ask Tony column that Rogers is completely healthy, but just being withheld from preseason play.

Interesting. Glad he isn’t hurt?

MKC today, however, tweeted that Rogers ankle is not guaranteed to be healthy enough for him to be back for game 1. Not sure who to believe.

Re Roth- I’d say he is the most hopeful of that group to turn into a solid starter this year. But I’m not expecting it after a handful of games late in a lost season.
Re Bowens- Agreed. He played out of his mind at times last year and was the true leader. I can’t commend him enough for keeping the D together after Barton and DQwell were hurt.
Re DQwell- Even if you think he’s awesome when healthy, you have to realize, he isn’t healthy.

Re: DQ I guess I was trying to say that he wasn’t the only possibly good player on our defense who isn’t playing (healthy or not). Without Rogers for whatever reason, my opinion of our DL takes a big hit.

While we may have had decent starting units in the past that may be better than this year’s unit, I’ll agree with Spidey that from top to bottom (including backups), this is the strongest LB core we’ve had since we returned.
There really won’t be much of a downgrade if the backups have to play, whereas in years past, any of the top gusy get hurt, we would really have a serious downgrade.
