Expanded Season - Will They or Won't They and Should They
With all the talk of expanding the NFL season to 18 or possibly 17 games, I was interested in what everyone here at DBN thought. Obviously there are many factors to consider. Money and player heath seem to be 2 issues always at the forefront of the discussion. One facet of this discussion that IMO should also be considered is will we, as fans, be getting the same level of product or will we be just getting more of an inferior product.
Many questions have come to me for which I have no answers.
Does the season start earlier or end later?
Does the NFL add a 2nd bye week?
Does the roster size grow?
Will this create a bigger divide between teams records or will they gravitate toward the center?
How would this affect the playoffs...Same teams every year or more of a rotation?
Could this affect the playoffs (more or less games)?
Will this make it more or less likely for future expansion teams?
These are just a few that came to mind, please discuss and add your own. My first post so any suggestions are welcome.
Side note: Will there be football next year?

It seems inevitable. It’s the most obvious way to appear to grow the pie in negotiations. The owners will sell it as, “instead of getting 60% of $1 billion, we’ll give you 55% of $1.5 billion” or something like that. But what they are missing is the harm to the brand of the NFL and football. Larger roster sizes, and maybe a second bye week will be part of the teal too.
Like the college football conversation in the other thread- my argument comes down to the meaningfulness of regular season games. More games just means the current games mean less. Don’t you hate those games at the end of the season when Payton Manning plays one series to keep his consecutive game streak alive and then sits because the Colts are in the playoffs anyway? Well, get ready for that to become pretty even more regular. Oh well.

I’m all for it if, and only if, it means each team plays their division rivals three times instead of two.

It does beg the question- where do these extra games come from, schedule wise? Do you have more equal format- meaning do you try to keep entire divisions with the same schedules, or do you try to balance it competitively, with more games of good teams vs. good teams and bad teams vs. bad teams?

Yahoo tells me that you have incorrectly used the phrase “beg the question” ;)

Ah, you got me. I once knew how to use that phrase, and it left me temporarily.
Thanks.

Let’s talk pros and cons of the 18 game schedule.
Pros:
No such thing as too many pancakes from Joe Thomas.
I hate injuries in meaningless games. If a player goes down, at least he can contribute in a real game.
Cons:
Less time to evaluate bubble players. (It would affect late additions more than those active since OTAs.)
More wear and tear. More fatigue toward the end of the season.
More opportunities for injuries.
Two fewer preseason games mean less time to fine tune for the regular season.
Gotta go to Bob Evans or IHOP to satisfy hunger for pancakes.
This is just off the top of my head.
Colt McCoy... the cure for Cleveland's Eric Berry man-crush.
More professional football is not something I’m opposed to.

This. I do understand the injury and wear and tear concerns, and think the players should be compensated for those issues, but still…..

16 games. All of this talk about an 18-game season is a bargaining ploy for labor negotiations.

16 games. If they pushed to 18, could you imagine what the player’s union would do? I’m not saying in the present, with the current negotiations, but I mean in the next 5 – 10 yrs. I’m pretty sure players will get upset about their post career benefits, since this increases the odds of injury.
Plus imagine what potential standoff between the teams and fans…. Ticket prices are already costly enough as it is, just imagine what 2 more “actual” games would do to your costs.
Next add what happens with the schedules of the other sports’ seasons… I already hate that the NCAA bowl games are fighting for air time with NFL playoff games. You’d almost need NFL ticket/College Gameday just to see whichever team you’re rooting for.
I am both curious on how this will effect the gambling world and partially the fantasy football world. I don’t know that the odd’s makers and book keepers will be too happy that there are 2 more, possibly trash, games… But I’m guessing that the world is full of suckers and Vegas will still rake in quite a bit of money off of it.
