Transactions: Cleveland Browns' Gerard Lawson Included in First Batch of Cuts; Bowens Concerned
The Cleveland Browns announced their first batch of roster cuts today, having to trim their roster from 80 players to 75 players. The players who were waived included:
- WR Taurus Johnson
- OL John Malecki
- DL Titus Adams (waived/injured)
- CB Gerard Lawson
- CB John Bowie
The only moderate surprise on the list is Gerard Lawson, who has made the roster the past two years as a backup return man to Joshua Cribbs. It looks like Joe Haden or someone else will fill that role now. Lawson also may have hurt his chances with a DUI charge earlier in the offseason.
UPDATE: In addition, linebacker David Bowens is concerned about his roster spot when final cuts come this Saturday:
"I'm uncertain,'' he said. "Sometimes you get a sense of what's going on by what you're doing. I mean, in eight years I don't think I've played in the fourth quarter.''

It should be a surprise that Steptoe is not on this list.

I don’t understand all the Steptoe hate. Sure, he’s not that good, but he’s still better and more deserving of a spot than the guys we just cut. I don’t expect him to make the roster this season, but I don’t see why he is so disliked. Does nobody remember when he set up the win against the Jaguars a couple years ago with a spectacular play?

I disagree. Lawson was more deserving.
a) I think we could use a 5th CB, especially since B-Mac sucks.
b) I don’t want steptoe anywhere near the field as a receiver
c) I don’t want steptoe anywhere near the field as a returner
d) I don’t mind lawson as a returner.

Steptoe has less value to our team than many other players currently on the roster. This has been the case for several years, and he hasn’t been completely released from the team yet, so people feel like he’s overdue.

He’s low on the depth chart.

PD has an article that he isn’t confident he will make the roster.

The Bowens tidbit is a little surprising to me. He played really solid the second half of last year out of position. I’d especially be surprised/disappointed if Barton makes the team in front of him.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were both cut.

I’ll be surprised if Bowens is cut. Didn’t he just come back from an injury? That’s probably why he was in in the 4th.

Eric barton definitely ought to get cut ahead of David Bowens from what I’ve seen. If Bowens can manage to play at 2/3 the level he was at last year is a solid backup linebacker with good veteran leadership. I’d be really surprised if he got cut. I think the 4th tight end has to go, considering that peyton hillis could handle playing a little H-back type of stuff, a 4th tight end just isn’t necessary.

Bowens can’t get cut! He’s one of Mangini’s NYJ boys. /sarc
