Cleveland Browns Rookie Safety T.J. Ward Really Stands Out in Tough Loss
A very bright spot in a tough loss, plus another surprise player steps up his play and should get starter consideration too.

Ward having that many tackles isn’t a good thing.
It’s not a lie if you believe it.

Yeah, I know. How many were around the line of scrimmage, how many were down field?
Down field tackles is a poor stat.

Poor to our defense, I meant.

well. I didn’t see all of them. However, these are the plays I do remember seeing.
I remember seeing Ward tackling K2 right at the LOS (or maybe behind). I remember seeing Ward make a tackle against the run near the line (maybe a gain of a yard or two). I remember seeing a nice play on ST where someone took out a guys legs and negated any sort of significant return and it turned out to be ward. I get what you mean, but I remember 3 specific plays where Ward made a tackle and this tackle was ACTUALLY a good play and not just dragging a guy down from behind after a 30 yard gain. Plus, he looked good blitzing.

True.

Did I not explain why he was right? Why jump in and try to make me look stupid and inferior?
My points are correct, so why bother.

I am saying you have to take each tackle in context. It’s possible TJ was playing very close to the LOS in run support on run downs and made a lot of tackles. It’s possible our linebackers did a terrible job and he made a lot of tackles in the secondary because of it. The number of tackles doesn’t tell us one way or the other, you would have to rely on the game tape, which is why I assume rufio agrees.
I was agreeing with you. My questions were more hypothetical. Wasn’t asking for actual statistics.

I wonder what rufio thinks though about the game tape from ward yesterday.

Haven’t gotten to it yet, grad school.

Yes. All tackles mean out of context was that Ward brought ballcarriers to the ground. It doesn’t say anything about the percentage of tackles he missed if any, where the tackles were made or against which kinds of plays they were made, if the tackles were made because he couldn’t cover, or if Ward was doing his job or not.
All they really say is that Ward was close to the ball. Could be good or bad.

Just my nonprofessional opinion, but he looked great. Near the line of scrimmage to make tackles, and not once did I see him miss a tackle. Just what we need.
Kill them. Kill them all.
after one game I am ecstatic with that pick. I was worried after the draft that we would regret passing on Thomas to take Haden, but now it looks like we got a good corner and safety, instead of just one of those things.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

THIS! Yes, its still early, but I am extremely pleased with our first 3 draft picks. If only Hardesty would have stayed healthy. Ward and Haden will be, if they continue to play at this level, very good in the NFL.

Definitely. I saw good tackling from both Ward and Haden on Sunday. It will be interesting to see KC’s first round safety play this week and how our T.J. matches up.

It is when you consider in week 1 last season our secondary was making Peterson look like a god among men.

There’s some other analogies to game 1 of last season that I don’t like though. We started otu strongly in the first half and then tanked in the second half. From there, the season just got worse and worse.

Perhaps the Browns should reconsider their starting safety unit and have both Ward and Adams starting instead of Elam.

moon doesn’t have cussing fits. he remains calm, lists all of the awards that the player has earned, then lists off a bunch of random UDFA’s and training camp fodder, then compares those players to successful NFL players, even if they have almost no similarities whatsoever.

I know it’s been 1 game and all, but i’m looking forward to the day that we can officially add Ward to the likes of Polomalu and Reed, obviously too soon, but i love the way the kid plays

I also remember in the first quarter Haden made an outstanding play when they threw a WR screen and almost immediately hit him, gotta say its kind of inspiring to see our secondary playing that way considering what we’ve been subjected to in seasons past
