Ask Arrowhead Pride: Browns Edition
Hey guys!
Tomahawk44 here from Arrowhead Pride. Coming over to answer and questions you may have about the Kansas City Chiefs going into week 2. Ill do a quick rundown from week 1 and then shoot away!
Our Special Teams are "Special" If it is Arenas or McCluster teams are going to have a hard time with this group as we all saw on Monday as McCluster brought a punt back 94 yards for a TD and Arenas was one block away from bringing one to the house himself
Our D is heads and shoulders over the 2009 version. Dont look to put up the rushing yards you did last season on KC.
Cassel and the offense need some work.. Enough said

Your secondary gave up a few big pass plays to SD. Any concerns there? I know Jake is not a deep threat usually but just thought I’d ask.

Well our secondary seems to have improved so I hope not
witht the additions of Berry and Arenas they look pretty solid. Arenas played very well stepping in on nickel situations and Berry played pretty well minus the blown coverage on Naane. Flowers is a stud as normal and Carr played very well on Monday.
Chiefs Will
Berry also had some trouble covering Antonio Gates
But they made some adjustments, and I think the secondary looked pretty solid at the end of the game.
looks like we'll need to be worried more
about a running QB in Seneca Wallace rather than Delhomme?

How do you see McCluster fitting into the offense? More as a receiver? Running back? Obviously he was very effective in the return game, but I didn’t see him having many touches on the offensive side of the ball Monday night
well I think he will do a little bit of it all
I know in preseason they used him at RB a LOT and if he can get to the outside on a sweep he can be pretty affective. Most of the passes I have seen to him have been short to give him a chance to make a play… and deff on the special teams like you said.. it will almost be a two headed monster on kickoff returns between him and Arenas… I do expect to see McCluster a little more involved in this game
Chiefs Will
I know it has only been 5 games (counting pre-season), but how has Eric Berry looked?
On Monday he seemed to struggle with Gates one-on-one, but who doesn’t? What about the other games?
I think Berry has looked pretty promising
he did have trouble with Gates and had a blown coverage which led to an easy SD TD but I think after he gets a little more comfortable he will be just fine. Like you said Gates is tough to cover. Ill see if I can get the gif guy from AP to come over and show some of the more positive things we saw from Berry in the preseason

How is my boy Mike Vrabel doing in KC? Is he ever utilized as an offensive weapon as he was back in his halcyon days as a Pat?
by Les Fleurs Du Mal on Sep 15, 2010 12:38 PM EDT reply actions
Vrabel has been a hell of a leader
he has mentored our young LBs and Andy Studebaker seems to really be learning from him.. and yes Vrabel has been used in the offense. He scored a TD last season from the TE spot and he lined up on Monday on offense on the TD scored by Moeaki
Chiefs Will
I wont say more special
but I will say as special with the potention to be moer special. I just hope Cribbs doesnt do to us what he did last year…
Chiefs Will
no prob man
and I understand that an I can see your argument. Cribbs has been doing this for a while now and holds records so it is hard to match up with your ST.
Chiefs Will
I would say equally as special because we have two threats
So if one guy is having an offday or tired or whatever the case there’s an equally threatening player that can fill in.

As GB said, we have two guys that can take it back. Arenas was a missed block away from taking one back. The same block on the punter was made by the same player that missed the first one when McCluster made his big return.

They both have played one NFL game. We are talking about 4-5 years of success for the Browns special teams. You have good reason to be optimistic, but there is still a long way to go.
exactly. By the same logic, Ryan Matthews is a bust.

Matthews had 75 yards in that game, not exactly terrible.
And I wasn’t saying that our return game is better. It’s just that McCluster has been the one talked about this week when Arenas nearly had a touchdown along with several other big returns.

matthews had 3.9 yards per carry and one fumble. not exactly good.

As yet I don't see a similar Dawgs question forum so I'll ask here
How is Cleveland’s run defense looking this year?

yes if someone from over here would go over and do this at AP as well it would be awesome :)

I was going to, but I have to wait a day to post over there.

So far it has been tough to gauge.
We did a nice job against Tampa (30-119) but the real test for the Browns will be this week. The Bucs didn’t have a RB that scared me. Cadillac is okay, but he isn’t the fast athletic RB that could torch our LB’s. If Jackson is able to play, he could help in this aspect.
I think Charles and McCluster could have huge games if the Chiefs run wide. The Browns front seven’s major weakness is speed and playing in space.

Agree with all of this. It’s also worth noting that we’ve added a trio of very good tackling DBs (Sheldon Brown and Joe Haden and TJ Ward) since last we met.

how are they in coverage?
Bowe is pretty big and physical. If the weather is good AND Bowe can catch a ball, it will go a long way to opening huge opportunities for Jamaal running and Dexter in the slot. Of course, I’d love to see that happen for 3 big days.

Well supposedly, coverage was a weakness of Wards but he’s done a pretty good job, covered Winslow for 4 catches for 32 yards….a lot of people considered him to be a "reach’ when he was drafted, but he’s started all 5 games (including preseason) and led the team with 11 tackles week 1, he’s a very exciting guy to watch and would rather “make a mistake full speed” than looking lost.
Haden as well has looked very promising and has improved, quite literally, every single time he’s on the field….been very impressive to watch a secondary thats physical and can tackle for once.

I expect Sheldon Brown and Wright to be matched up on Bowe. Bowe is bigger than Wright, almost definitely faster than Brown. Wright is quicker, and Brown is going to be as physical a CB as you’ll find outside of Winfield.
Haden would probably be our best bet physically, but he’ll be in his 2nd game as a pro, and I doubt Ward will be responsible for Bowe too often.

Sheldon brown is a guy who likes to bump and run and get physical. Haden, our rookie, also has shown that he can get in there and wallop a guy. Ward is a guy who loves also to dole out punishment. In short, we can handle a big, physical receiver, something we couldn’t do last year.

Are there any speakable injuries for the Chiefs?
I know that Jake Delhomme is injured for the Browns, but I was just wondering what kind of injuries (if any) that the Chiefs have.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Tyson Jackson and Ryan O'Call
O’Call is a bigger injury than you think because in my opninion Barry Richardson didnt do so hot on Monday and Jackson looked very good on Monday so that may hurt us

and for us, Rogers missed practice recently, though he missed practice last week and played. DQwell jackson and Lauvao missed practice, but both should be back by friday supposedly.

I’d like to know (from the perspective of both Browns fans and Chiefs fans)…
Should we expect an encore of Jerome Harrison’s monster game against the Chiefs last year?
Chiefs fans- Has there been a big improvement in the run defense from last year to this year?
Browns fans- I know last week was somewhat of a head-scratcher with how much we didn’t use Harrison. A.) Do you see us using Harrison more this week and B.) Does the good possibility of Wallace starting mean more or less touches for Harrison?
My responses to this would be…
No-Jerome will get his 100yds, but nothing like last year
Yes-I think the entire D has improved in KC since last year (they will also still be amped up from beating SD last week)
Yes-I think this week will be a more balanced approach in our offense, possibly leaning even more towards the run than pass
More-I would think with Wallace staring, while capable, Harrison will get more touches
Question is will Harrison get the touches or Hillis? I would much rather see the I formation with Vickers and Harrison myself.
A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths --- Steven Wright
The D will be better for the single fact that Dorsey will be in the game as opposed to last year when he was out with an injury. Unlike what the media has reported, Dorsey is in no way a bust. In fact, he looked like a pro-bowler on Monday. That being said, Tyson Jackson won’t play this weekend, which will have some impact, but not the same that the loss of Dorsey had.
We’ve also seeing a much-improved Derek Johnson along along with more depth across the line to spell players like Edwards at NT who wore down quickly last season

It is definitely too early to conclusively say, but those guys have looked goo so far. I agree. There will be a lot less explosive run plays on both sides. our defense has improved with Rogers healthy and guys who can tackle in the secondary if Charles gets to the 2nd level. No 42-34 (or whatever the score was last year)

Much of my confidence in Dorsey comes from his play at the end of last season, not just what we’ve seen of him so far. Jackson, on the other hand, needs to prove that he can play well consistently.
