Cleveland Browns Practice Squad: Browns Lose Out on Geathers

Cleveland Browns DL Brian Sanford made the practice squad.

The Cleveland Browns announced six of eight players who will be on the practice squad, per a tweet by the OBR. Currently, the players reported to be on the practice squad are:

What happened to DE Clifton Geathers? Well, reports indicate that the Miami Dolphins claimed him off waivers, meaning he will be on their 53-man roster. Another thing to note is that the Browns did not put Coye Francies on the practice squad. While it's not a "crushing loss" or anything of that nature, I still wanted the team to give him a shot.

With two spots open on the practice squad, they will either sign someone from a different team who was waived, or they might be reserving a spot for another player they will waive (i.e. maybe a Titus Brown). Project player Joel Reinders is not on the practice squad.

Star-divide

You can definitely say goodbye to Brandon McDonald for good now, since he signed with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals are doing their best job to assemble a roster full of former Browns. Their roster includes:

  • QB Derek Anderson
  • RB Jason Wright
  • OG Rex Hadnot
  • CB Brandon McDonald
  • S Hamza Abdullah

Bit surprised Danso’s not on this list, but I guess he really didn’t have anything to offer other than size. He never played much at ECU either.

Can this get confirmed? I just read that he was waived when he got hurt. Never saw a follow up.

Yeah, sorry, I forgot about the waived/injured thing. He is listed on the team’s injured reserve on the official site, so I removed my note mentioning him and the practice squad:

i’ve always been a fan of Leon Washington, at least fantasy football-wise.

i would guess this helps his chances? leaves him and Forsett at RB.

There was an interesting story earlier today about the Raiders coaching staff getting overruled by Al Davis and being forced to keep DB Mike Mitchell, whom they didn’t want, while cutting a kid named Stevie Brown they DID want. In the end, Brown cleared waivers and hit their practice squad.

Small story, but the Raiders continue to entertain even after JaMarcus Russell’s departure.

by Michael Jay on Sep 5, 2010 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

as long as Al is the boss they will continue to entertain, and continue to not win a whole lot.

I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

sad. Oakland deserves better. I consider their D a serious sleeper this year.

by discoinferno083 on Sep 5, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

All the power to him. He signs the checks, he makes the calls he wants. A lil sad, as he once was a maverick and when he intervened he was a real driver to their success. Now, not so much. Still, if you got the money, and only a few years at most, go for it Al. Life is to short to worry about the consequences.

his biggest problem has been his inability to adjust to the changes in the NFL. The game passed him by and he refuses to get up to speed.

by Justin Kowalczyk on Sep 6, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. Whatever legacy Al might have had is going to be pissed on and tainted. When he passes, everyone will shrug.

It would be much more noble for him to relaize where he’s at and pass the reins off.

He’s disgracing the franchise and the fans.

by discoinferno083 on Sep 6, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently he’s not too concerned about his legacy then. In the last twenty years he’s only run off a great running back (Marcus Allen) who put up career numbers the year after he left the Raiders, a damn good coach who returned the Raiders to prominence after ten years out of the playoffs (Jon Gruden) and beat the piss out of the Raiders in the Super Bowl the year after he was sent packing, made several ridiculous draft picks, the latest examples being JaMarcus Russell (whom head coach Lane Kiffin didn’t way and was later fired over), and Darrius Heyward-Bey (whom Tom Cable openly admitted he didn’t want and later benched).

He’s a senile control freak and the Raiders won’t return to prominence until he’s gone (retired or otherwise).

by Michael Jay on Sep 6, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He may very well be senile. And if he keeps the Raiders down, that helps alot. That is one team that occassionally picks in front of us, so if they blow their picks all the better. Plus, for me he is theraputic. For example, pissed about trade up for BQ, I say, could have been worse, we could have JaMarcus Russel. Robo had a down year, and I say hey – at least he is not Heyward Bey. You should try it some time – works great.

I’m surprised we didn’t hold on to Norwood last year. Had a cup of tea with the Eagles, but after Jeremy Maclin blossomed and they resigned Hank Baskett, Norwood seemed a victim of the numbers game.

If you guys could hold Ingram to a relatively small amount of yards so his chances for the Heisman go down, that’d be great. If he plays, that is.

You pretty much have to stop/significantly slow down the running game, slow Jones down, and then score points. It is doable, especially if you can score points (they lost a lot on defense too).

Have we ever had a practice squad player contribute anything? Was Benard on the squad maybe?

by realmccoy on Sep 6, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Evan Moore, Marcus Benard, Chris Jennings, Brian Schaefering…. those are just guys from last years that contributed and are on the roster this season.

by Justin Kowalczyk on Sep 6, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

whoops Jennings got cut i forgot. well he did contribute last year, atleast in the Pitt game.

by Justin Kowalczyk on Sep 6, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I thing Benard can be a big deal. Evan Moore too – but I like him more as a 4 receiver package than TE.

Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"

by realmccoy on Sep 6, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Moore at TE creates just as bad of a matchup for the opposition as lining him up in the slot formation. I also think he is improving in the blocking aspect of his game, which could turn him from a situational TE to a surefire starter.

by Justin Kowalczyk on Sep 6, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that Bernard is the best pass rusher we have on this roster.

I am hoping that he can get a lot more reps this season.

I actually think it is a good thing if we are angry about a few of our cuts. Suggests we might actually have a bit more talent on the roster. That said, guys like Geathers are easy to fall in love with because of their “potential”, but very very rarely turn into anything worth keeping around.

Is this real? We are actually heading into the season with 3 CBs and 12 LBs? I cant believe we haven´t picked up someone yet. They want to count Mike Adams as a corner – BS. When they benched B-Mac, they put in Adams and then had to go back to B-Mac. Mike is too long in the tooth and too slow for CB, nice guy tho.

Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"

by realmccoy on Sep 6, 2010 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

do you see the difference in having Adams cover the other teams #4 WR not the #2 like he had to do last year? If not this conversation should end immediately and the red x in the upper right corner of your screen should be clicked immediately.

Mike Adams vs. TO is worrisome.
Mike Adams vs. Andre Caldwell is acceptable.

Difference between 2 and 4 is massive. I’m not saying Adams is anything great, but he can pass for a 4th CB.
