According to Peter King on Twitter, the Cleveland Browns could have their head coach named as soon as Thursday. As of this moment, King believes that the leading candidate remains St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. King also mentions that the team is looking for a defensive coordinator now. Is there any chance the Browns will let Shurmur handle the playcalling duties if he is named head coach?
Tony Grossi reported that the assistant coaches' scheduled meeting with Mike Holmgren this past Monday was postponed. Reports have surfaced from that the Browns might be interested in bringing former Miami Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt aboard as defensive coordinator, although the team has not ruled out bringing Rob Ryan back considering he did not receive the Carolina Panthers' head coaching gig.
The Browns interviewed Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell on Thursday. His interview fulfills the Rooney Rule, meaning Cleveland is free to name a head coach without a penalty. With Jon Gruden taking himself out of the running (he announced during the BCS Championship that he would return to announcing next year) and no meeting with Marty Mornhinweg even scheduled, it is looking more and more like Shurmur will be the guy.
