Wait a second. Colt might not be going anywhere.

I saw on here before that some people, I don't know who, believe Colt is gone and we will find a different QB elsewhere.

Star-divide

Well, I looked up Shurmur only to discover two things. One and more obvious Rams OC. Look at Bradford. I thought Bradford was going to blow chunks. Guess not. Then number two EAGLES QB COACH from '99-'08. Do I recall correctly that McNabb was mostly an option QB at Syracuse. I might be wrong but thats what I thought I read somewhere. McNabb now is mostly a pocket passer and I believe he passed on his pocketness (new word?) to Vick (look through options first and run as a LAST resort.) Then, we have no OC yet. I think Holmgren is looking for someone specifically for Colt. That last one is why I think Holmgren is trying to build the Offense around Colt. Thoughts?

This is off topic but DBN seems to be the most active SB blog BY FAR. FTS has like 7 comments on posts (even before he became LePrick.) But on here I see 288 comments and such, makes it fun to see at least 15 frequent users points of view.

I think what you saw was someone questioning whether Holmgren will be targetting another QB in this draft as a priority.

yeah i think that was it. However, i think this solidifies my trust in holmgrens faith in colt. He had a better qb rating than peyton mannings rookie season (although with half the starts)

I posted elsewhere, but I think Holmgren might be targeting Tom Clements, QB coach out of Green Bay.

I don’t think we’d give up on Colt yet. Especially with no Andrew Luck in this draft. Maybe if we didn’t fully believe in Colt we’d try to trade up to get someone like that, but I don’t think we’d pick anyone in this draft in the first.

Picking someone in the first round is the only way I think we could clearly state as a franchise that someone else is going to get a shot at QB and that Colt will be gone at some point.

I don’t really get your point about McNabb/Vick. Vick will still run when it’s advantageous, and he will still make people look silly when he does. McNabb isn’t close to that kind of athlete. Neither is Colt.

I think/hope our staff wants to hire someone from Green Bay as OC and we are waiting to talk to them at an appropriate time in the playoffs. I think so far that not having control of the playcalling is hurting the appeal of the job.

Even if we wanted to, doesn’t it seem like a pretty weak crop of QBs out there this year? Frankly Cam Newton is the only one that seems to me to look like a potential NFL caliber QB. Jake Locker doesn’t impress me too much. I’ve seen him play in the latter part of the 2010 season and he didn’t look like a top NFL QB prospect to me, and his accuracy is really not very good. Yet the latest projections I’ve seen show him getting picked in the top 15 or so. Do you know anything about this Blaine Gabbert kid from Missouri? I haven’t seen much of him but he seems to be the latest ‘flavor of the month’. I only really know what I’ve read, but from what I have read he doesn’t exactly seem like a top prospect either.

I think Ryan Mallet has a chance, but he’ll need good coaching.

Gabbert should have stayed another year in my opinion, but I think he was going to be in the competition for 1st QB off the board if he went in whichever year Luck didn’t go pro, if that makes sense. Talented, good mechanics, good size, I’d say the biggest strike against him is that he hasn’t been around all that long for people to get looks at him on tape.

Locker’s mechanics, arm, and mobility are really impressive to me. The thing that scares me is his accuracy. And it scares me a lot.

I don’t believe in Cam Newton or Ryan Mallet. Both are very physically talented.

Again, I think it is unlikely we take a QB at 6th overall. I think it is very likely we take a QB in the 6th round.

I agree with your last sentence. I think we’ll take a QB in the later rounds.

by emily522 on Jan 26, 2011 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

gabbert Imo came out early but could be good. I don’t think he is at that “elite” level yet as a prospect. Luck was the only surefire elite QB in this draft; a guy that has the numbers, the skills, and the intangibles and the polish.

Gabbert probably came out too early for his own potential, but in terms of draft stock it was the right time given the QB prospects this year.

by Roger Dorn on Jan 27, 2011 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. It was the right short term decision. But now if he flops people will always be wondering if that other year in school would have helped him mature as a QB.

probably. This is quite a good way to look at it. He would have been up against Pryor, Luck, Kirk Cousins, and possibly Landry Jones and matt Barkley. 2012 does look very intriguing now for QBs

There is no "off topic" if you’re talking Browns.

I wouldn’t look too deep in to the OC thing right now. Shurmur already said he was going to call the plays. So if we do hire someone he’ll most likely be an "assistant" If anything they’ll get a guy that Shurmur can be friends with..

It’s not a lie if you believe it.

Then, we have no OC yet. I think Holmgren is looking for someone specifically for Colt.

I doubt Holmgren is looking for an OC to fit Colt McCoy. He’s looking for an OC that embraces his philosophies and seems like he can be a solid coach. Tailoring an OC to a 2nd yr QB who we’re still not positive will be our QBOTF is very risky; in fact, I’d slide into Golan’s corner on “Holmgren hate” if he did this.

I agree, but I think that the offense Holmgren wants to use coincides with Colt’s strengths.

this has potential. use red kool-aid, mix a little booze with it, and call it “Blood of the Walrus”; very hateful and disturbing.

He absolutely was looking for an offensive guy who can develop QBs, and “QBs” means “Colt” right now….
…that’s why he hired Shurmur.

Also, I think Colt will be named the starter for this season and we’ll go from there. If he doesn’t perform well, then we’ll definitely be targeting Luck or someone else next year.

Do I recall correctly that McNabb was mostly an option QB at Syracuse.

You recall incorrectly.

I might be wrong

You are wrong.

but thats what I thought I read somewhere

I read somewhere that Bill & Hillary Clinton ran a Coke ring in Arkansas when Bill was governor. I’ve also read that George W. Bush helped plan 9/11. I don’t believe these things though just because I read it.

Look at Bradford. I thought Bradford was going to blow chunks. Guess not.

Well, if Shurmur was able to turn Bradford into a good QB despite the fact that YOU thought he was going to “blow chunks” then I guess Shurmur must be awesome — we all know that your opinion on Bradford was more important than just about everyone else who thought Bradford was a pretty damn good prospect, who apparently had the best pro-day since Troy Aikman and who Mike H. was willing to trade away most of our draft for.

Well, I looked up Shurmur only to discover two things.

You discovered that he was the OC for the Rams and the QB Coach for the Eagles - Wow, I had not read either of those things before.

I believe we absolutely are building around Colt – Shurmer and the OC. Would love to get Clements from GB – QB coach – theres a pretty good QB in GB that has gotten even better. Lets do it Holmes!!
