In a search for a coach.....What about Rob Ryan???

I am wondering if Rob Ryan is being considered a candidate for head coach. I love Rob Ryan, I think the players love Rob Ryan. I don't see him as someone that would kick a field goal on 4th down when were down by 14 to our rivals. Is he in the mix? Did he interview with Carolina. Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone heard anything about Rob Ryan this week? He did say it would be "dumb as hell " to fire Mangini. Hes probably a little pissed.....Anyone???

I see some club taking a shot with him over the next few years. It needs to be a team that is the right situation to gamble with him at the right time. Holmgren may not think he wants another guy from the def side of the ball. Or he may want someone with previous HC experience. Or he may want someone with a different temperament. Or he may want someone from the West Coast schemes tree. But, If he wants someone who has experience with the players on this team and has shown that players will follow him, that could qualify Ryan as a good choice.

This would be by far the awesomest choice we could currently make.

Do not understand why people think this would be a good idea. Rob Ryan would be a bigger leap then when we hired Mangini. I do not see how Rob Ryan would be any better then what was just fired IMO Rob would be a step back because now you have to deal with growing pains of a guy that has never been a HC.

People like his personality. That’s about it.

If Mangini wasn’t acceptable, I find it hard to believe Holmgren would pick one of his assistants to be the HC. All reports I have seen indicate Mike wants someone of a similar, offense-oriented football philosophy. I certainly don’t claim to be be privy to MH’s thought process, but I don’t view Ryan as even a long shot for the Head Coaching job.

Suggestion… right now thee are about 40 threads on five other posts discussing the head coach search.
Seems like it might be a good idea to have a new single ‘home’ post / thread for this topic.

The proofreading isn’t bad in this one, but please stop using multiple punctuation marks in a row. I don’t care if other people think I’m being picky or too hard on the guy. We are trying to keep the discussion here mature and intelligent. Ending every other sentence with “!!!!” or “?” doesn’t do that.

I am a fan of his, too. It would be great if we could just hang on to Ryan as our DC for now. Some stability there would really help with both new HC and OC coming on board. The man definitely knows football, no doubt about that. However, in my opinion, he needs to work on his public speaking skills and polish up his professional appearance a bit so more teams will take him seriously. Many are sure to disagree with me. But, his “devil may care” attitude might cause some teams to take pause when considering him as the face and voice of their franchise. It is a business.

Bottom line: I can see him as an HC somewhere in 3-5 years. Not sure if it will be Cleveland, though.

by JustPlainBrowns on Jan 10, 2011 11:06 AM EST reply actions

I agree with pretty much everything you said except if he remains the Browns DC for now I don’t care about the “polish up his professional appearance” part. Not so sure I care a whole lot about his public speaking skills either. If he can build the Browns defense into something we have to make up a nickname for ("… the famous “Browns Blockade” defense from the Cleveland 2011-14 teams…"), I don’t care if he looks and sounds like Ozzie Osborne after a three day bender.

Let’s just say the title wasn’t the only thing I had a problem with. Comments are one thing, but when you make a fan post, it’s supposed to be a blog entry. It should be proofread at least once, and I sincerely hope this one wasn’t.

SipedUp wanted to reconstruct NTN’s face following NTN’s “constructive” criticism of SU’s postings.

it was amazing. f bombs for everyone. and series of exclamation points as far as the eye could see that concluded w/ “1”, for good measure. too bad most missed it.

Suffice to say, it was a rant of absolutely epic proportions.
The funniest part was that NTN rec’d SU’s rant (which was directed at NTN), then proceeded to provide some additional criticism for SU to cap it off.
I could probably reconstruct the entire thread from memory, for a nominal fee if anyone’s interested.

i also think you learned a lesson in maturity, if i’m not mistaken.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jan 10, 2011 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ryan could be a good head coach, but I think the plan is to get a HC with a background in offense. I’m kind of looking forward to it; our last few coaches were more defensive-minded.

by Matt Y. on Jan 10, 2011 4:56 PM EST reply actions

I got this.

Why was Mangini Fired?

- lack of “balls” (going for it on forth and one, too conservative, etc.)
- lack of “connection” (i.e, players “quitting on him” at the end of this season)

Ryan would obviously be a plus in those categories where we speculate Mangini wasn’t.
Also, there would be continunity with Ryan being familiar with the players, defense and organization.

Not saying it’s likely to happen, but there are interesting positives to at least interviewing Rex, particularly if other team(s) are going to be doing so.

by discoinferno083 on Jan 10, 2011 6:19 PM EST reply actions

I mean, Rob, not Rex.

oopsie.

by discoinferno083 on Jan 10, 2011 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

i don’t think either of those is at all interesting as it relates to evaluating a qualified head coaching candidate. they would be extremely far down the list, in any case … and certainly wouldn’t trump X’s and O’s.

by DontCallMeJoey on Jan 10, 2011 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think your second point holds any water.

saying ryan would be better in these categories too would be speculation. because his brother is rex ryan, he would go for it on 4th an 1? i think he would trust his D, considering he is the guy who had a large part in building that defense.

how do you know players won’t quit on Rob?

He’s great i hope we can keep him. If you give him a few pass rushers and another playmaker in the secondary we can be a top 5 defense.

by Zoom88 on Jan 11, 2011 9:30 AM EST reply actions

Though Ryan has said he’s ready and he expects to get interviewed, I haven’t seen him on any list in the media for any team including the Browns. Has anyone seen him talked about as a possibility for any team? Has anyone heard of a report of him being interviewed by any team on a coaching search this year?
As far as my opinion goes, I’m against having Ryan as the next Browns coach.

Give interviews, but Shurmur is frontrunner

Give Rob Ryan an interview but bring in more canidates such as Brian Schottenheimer, offensive coordinator of the Jets, Marty’s son. A coach or offensive coordinator with some experience with the “west coast offense” or some one with college and pro coaching experience. Pat Shurmur looks like the forerunner in this race because of his experience and knowledge of the “West Coast Offense”. The Browns are seven players away from playoff material, lets see what Mike Holmgren decides on running this team.

by Anthony7 on Jan 11, 2011 11:34 PM EST reply actions

You are incorrect sir. You forget that Joe Thomas = 2 players so that reduces the number to 7.

One could argue that getting a really good replacement for him might be like adding 3 good players to the offense.
