Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

What is it that's wrong?

Hey guys! I'm sure a few of you remember me. I know it's uncouth to create a new post without a specific contribution, but I trust you'll forgive me. Deployment is limiting my opportunities to read up on our beloved Browns, and I need an explanation for what can only be described as disappointing (though not horrendous) results so far. One of the easiest schedules in the NFL has netted us a losing record after six weeks. I'd love a few paragraph long explanations of what it is that you guys are seeing. Why is it we are where we are? What are you disappointed in? What are you happy with? What's your prognosis for the season?

I hate to pull this kind of out of the blue, doesn't know what's up kind of request but I just don't get to see any play and I can't pull much understanding from ESPN recaps. So help a brother out.

PS: For those of you that do remember me. Things are going well here in the Helmand province. We've managed a few finds with ZERO traumas/fatalities. Unfortunately many of our friends in different and more hostile areas can't say the same. If you're the type, keep them in your prayers and in your hearts.

So far his decision to pick Shurmur has been a trainwreck. I do not like any of Holmgren’s decisions out side of Heckert.

a few things.

1- injuries (Steinbach at O-line, Hillis not 100%, Haden out, etc)
2- the coaching/preparation/playcalling has been very suspect. Shurmur is showing himself to be a rookie coach, and possibly not able to manage the OC and head coaching right now.

3- we are very succeptible to the big play. Other than that, we’re doing an okay job staying in games.

it’s become apparent that we’re not a “good” or “great” team. Games like Jax, Arizona, and Seattle will show where we’re at.

Just for a day or two, but I can usually manage to check the front page once a week or so. I just don’t comment because A) wouldn’t you know the internet connections in Afghanistan are somewhat substandard so twenty minutes of computer time is usually dedicated to fighting gmail enough to keep up with correspondence and B) it’s hard to have insight when you haven’t seen a game in two years.

HEY!! DANVAIL!!! We didn’t forget about you. I even put you in my “12 days of Christmas” DBN version last year. Welcome back and glad you’re OK.

To answer your question, we don’t look extremely horrible. We just keep giving up the big plays that leads to our loses. The O is ruff a lot of the time and the D is pretty solid. It’s just gunna take more time with this young team.

Hey Dan, great to see you.

On defense, we just don’t have enough youth, depth, and speed. Our young players are mostly doing better than I have expected this year: Haden is locking guys like Brandon Marshall down, Phil Taylor and Sheard are looking like promising DL, Rubin is making a solid transition to a 4-3 DT, and D’Qwell Jackson looks better than he ever has, making his normal abundance of tackles but also getting in the backfield for more sacks and a ton of TFLs.

On offense, we have problems all over. For one, we are making the transition to a pass-first, ball-controlled offense (short passes). The receivers outside of Ben Watson aren’t showing the kind of savvy and intelligence that they would need to succeed. Basically watch Wes Welker and see how he subtly adjusts against zone or man, and he changes his routes based on what is happening—we do absolutely zero of that outside of Watson.

The line is looking like it’s taken a huge step back from last year. Pashos being hurt to begin the season was bad, as his replacements simply could not block the DEs of Cincy or Indy. The guards have no idea what they are doing, but could become good players if they got the chance to sit and learn for a few years. Both assignment (who to block/where to block) and technique (how to block them and what sort of hand placements/techniques to use in a given situation) are lacking bigtime on their parts.

Our running game is more or less nonexistant because we are using the formations and personnel of the pass-first offense we want to be, but we don’t present enough of a threat passing to back people out of the box. The result is that if one of our RBs doesn’t make 1-2 guys miss tackles, we get ≤ 3 yards every time.

Colt McCoy—in my opinion—looks just completely flustered. The things that are supposed to be his strengths; intelligence, leadership, patience, toughness, accuracy, etc. are no longer there. I think it all begins with protection, and a lot of it is on McCoy. The snap count is so predictable that he allows defenses not only to get a jump in rushing the passer, but also to hide their coverages until the very last minute. The end result? He sees immediate pressure and doesn’t know where to go with the ball because he’s not seeing the same thing post-snap.

He gets laid out at least once a game, and then stops stepping into his throws, stops reading downfield, stops stepping up into the pocket, and he starts losing accuracy.

Greg Little is showing promise, and he’s a monster after the catch. But he isn’t polished enough to the point where he can be that security blanket for Colt. If he can get there and Colt can recognize pressure and use his brain at the line before the snap a little more, it would go a LONG way, and we could end up looking like a decent team by the end of the year.

So I suppose the questions I have are as follows:

1) Which of the important pieces are salvageable? Is Shurmur going to need to be replaced immediately? Is QB a pressing need this offseason?

2) From what you’re saying and what I’m hearing elsewhere, our recent high picks with the exceptions of possibly Hardesty and Ward are all performing well. 100% Heckert, or does Holmgren deserve some credit outside of acquiring Heckert?

3) Any huge holes on defense, or are we in a good position to grab quality depth at our convenience?

4) Bigger need: offensive talent or offensive execution/planning?

Actively seeking inspiration for a new handle

by danvail on Oct 19, 2011 6:38 AM EDT up reply actions

1) We have a lot of young guys who look like good players, but not really any stars. There’s a lot that can help us for the foreseeable future. I’m not a fan of Shurmur so far, but I don’t think he needs to get replaced immediately. Everyone deserves a fair shot.

I don’t know about McCoy. If the season ended today I would say it’s a need, but he’s got time to change that.

2) Hardesty is doing a pretty good job and Ward hasn’t been bad, just not as good as his start to last year. I have no idea who deserves credit. My gut says mostly Heckert, but Holmgren has some input as well.

3) Our problem on defense is that we’re ok everywhere, but not great anywhere. We could really use another quality DB, and probably a linebacker.

4) In my opinion, execution/planning is the bigger issue. Our talent at WR is certainly an issue though.

"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools" -Hemingway

by notthatnoise on Oct 19, 2011 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

1) The whole offense looks slow and seems like they are thinking more than reacting. I think this can be fixed as the guys continue to get used to the new scheme. I don’t think Shurmur needs replaced immediately, but he has got to quit looking like he is new to the league by not being prepared. I don’t know about Colt. The leadership is there, but as Rufio says, he gets hit once and he falls apart.
2) Our recent high picks are doing awsome…Sheard and Taylor are in the top 10 for early candidates of ROY awards on defense. Little is showing promise as a WR and should become a legit slot threat for us if we ever get a #1 receiver. I give all the credit to Heckert on those.
3) Defense is very suspect at the S position and LB position and CB position. Young is mediocre at best, the LB’s just need to get younger and more talented outside of DQ who is playing great, and Sheldon Brown is showing is age at CB this year.
4) Both…we need help all over here. OL needs improved outside of Thomas and Mack. We desperately need a #1 WR. As mentioned above, the jury is still out on McCoy. Execution of plays and planning also needs to be smoother and faster.
On the bright side though..Atlanta is not playing like the SB contender many thought they would be so hopefully our pick from them continues to get better.

1. I still think there is room for Shurmur and/or Colt to be the answer, though my confidence that either will actually do this is dwindling. If Colt can just take his time at the line so that he doesn’t get obliterated, a lot of things will start falling into place for him; balls will be more accurate, blitzes will become less effective, and the offense as a whole will run much more smoothly. Shurmur can work with QBs and he knows his Xs and Os. But unfortunately I think it is going to take an offseason for either of them to re-evaluate themselves, learn, and grow. Both have major weaknesses right now.

If the season ended tomorrow, I would want to draft a QB in round 1.

2. I think the vast majority of this is Heckert. The only draft pick Holmgren has really made himself was Colt, and he shared that openly. I think he probably has input and advice, but isn’t making the final decision. Whatever they are doing is working.

3. I think that for the first time in a while we don’t have a huge hole on D. I’d probably say a FS would be priority 1, then OLB, then a pass rusher are our biggest needs. But if we wanted to draft someone else, say another CB or a pass-rushing DT, I don’t think it would be a glaring oversight. Help anywhere except CB1 would probably be welcome.

4. Offensive talent is clearly the bigger need. The execution and gameplanning need tweaks, but when you can’t even execute blocking assignments correctly, or when players fill the wrong gap, no play is ever going to work. We’ve done some things well in terms of setting up defenses for big plays later or taking advantage of the other defense’s aggressiveness, but not enough. Our offense is still too wide and too shallow, mostly because I think we are searching for what we do well. We need to figure that out (hint: it’s running the ball) and develop plays that work effectively off of one another more than just run every play that exists to see whether or not we’re good at it.

Great to hear from you Danvail.

The Browns are extremely young with a rookie head coach. There is a lot that needs to be learned before this is a consistently competitive team. They look like a bunch of rookies.

Also, I looked up Helmand cause i didn’t know where it was and google’s first result was hellman’s mayonnaise.

Google was correct in placing mayonnaise ahead of the Helmand province of Afghanistan in global importance. It’s not going to be on the cutting edge of the next global renaissance, by any means.

You have any particular players in mind in need of immediate replacement? Are there any Brian Russels on this year’s squad?

robiskie was the only one i can think of who really needed to be dumped yesterday, and little already took his spot.

aside from that, the guards need a lot of help, but they’re pretty young so maybe they get an excuse. as has been mentioned above, the safety play has been average at best, and sheldon brown ain’t great, but they are serviceable, i guess.
