Ask Big Cat Country
Hello DBN.
Brian (aka "The Licensed Optimist") from DBN was nice enough to give us over at BCC a chance to have some questions about the Browns answered, and I thought I would return the favor.
Feel free to ask about former Browns if you please, even Robiskie even if he hasn't played for us yet.(Matt Roth or coaches Earnest Byner(RB's) or Mel Tucker(DC).) You can even ask about the former Jag now on your roster. (Tony Pashos)
Anyhow shoot with any questions you want. (Sans questions about the "possible" move to LA and etc. Not gonna happen for like a billion reasons)

Any confirmed Robiskie sightings?
Dawgs By Nature: Where we're about one loss away from Jonestowning ourselves.
Haha
None yet. Been hurt with a Hammy since he’s been here, and we had a bye week when he was signed. As bad as our WR’s have been this season, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him really soon though. And I know how little separation Robiskie gets. But unlike Robiskie our receivers are small and still can’t get and separation. A big guy like Robiskie still has a small window to throw to even if he’s being covered.
What do you guys thing of Gabbert? QB of the future? Failed experiment? Somewhere in between?
I remember hearing something about your owner saying if you don’t make the playoffs this season, Del Rio will be fired. Any speculation on who the replacement would be?
Can we borrow MJD until either Hardesty or Hillis is 100% healthy?
I take this optimism shit seriously.

I'm a bit of an optimist, so...
I’d go QB of the future with Gabbert, but the jury’s definitely still out. I don’t really think you can make a firm judgement on any QB either way in his rookie year. He’ll make a jaw-dropping throw and then make a couple of facepalm throws. He desperately needs an offseason to work on his footwork. I think he’ll be fine in the long run.
I think it’d take winning out or close to it for JDR to have a shot at saving his job. I expect his replacement to be a current NFL assistant, probably one with no NFL head coaching experience. The most recent name I’ve heard thrown around is Jay Gruden, but it’s all sheer speculation.
Gabbert is the QB of the future
He’s not playing well, but he’s young and developing. He came from a spread offense that’s very little like ours. A large part of our passing game comes from a short set pocket, something he’s not comfortable with at all. When he feels pressure around him he tends to tuck and run the ball, instead of throwing the ball from the pocket. In college he was coached to run at the first sign of pressure. He does have wheels and he can throw on the run well, but he hasn’t been taking too many chances once he gets outside the pocket if the play breaks down.
On the plus side, Gabbert is very smart. He’s already calling audibles, and last week he was even calling his own plays for a while. He’s tall, fast, strong armed, very quick release, a leader, hard working, accurate when he uses proper technique.
The owner did say if we don’t make the playoffs this year that the coaching staff would be gone, but he back tracked a bit; and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that Garrard isn’t here anymore. Shoot if it wasn’t for the lack of a passing game, this would be a playoff team. Good special teams, good run D, good pass D, good rb/running game.
Sure you could borrow MJD, but it will cost you 3 or 4 1st round picks. lol
The coaching thing is kinda sad
I personally don’t have strong feelings for JDR but he has the team playing hard and disciplined. Which is what you ask for first out of your head coach. I would never want to end up like the Browns where a new head coach is like having a new pair of shoes.
This is a battle of the most medicore franchises over the last decade...
Also do you guys think McCoy is a good QB?
I doth protest.
The Browns have been god awful over the last decade. They stink. We yearn for mediocrity.

That's a very dangerous wish there my friend
The Jaguars have been stuck in averageness hell. That’s how you end up with a coach like JDR who has been here for 9 seasons and has a .500 record. Its how you end up being good one year than sucking for the next four, and they give you just enough reasons for you to be optimistic just to be crushed by the worst offensive performances ever. The Jaguars are like the Toyota Corollas of NFL franchises, it’s better than nothing right?
i would say the browns are more like a classic vehicle; very nice to look at but don’t touch! and they take leaded gas.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
We’ve mentioned MJD and Gabbert, but I’m really wondering about your offensive line. Is it more geared toward run or pass blocking? How are the personnel at each position?

Good question
the offensive line has the athleticism to be a really good pass blocking line, but they are still better at run blocking.
At LT we have a top 10 pick in Monroe, and he is quickly becoming a very good player. He’s basically erased Dwight Freeney the last couples of time we’ve seen him.
At Center we have a very steady and good player in Brad Meester. I would say he is the equivalent of Jeff Saturday. Very smart and mobile, and rarely makes mistakes.
At RG we have what many in the organization think is a pro bowl worthy in Uche Nawaneri. He’s athletic and very strong. He can play any interior position, but being that he’s probably our best run blocker he’s at RG.
At RT we have a sleeper, Guy Whimper. We picked him up off of waivers last year from the Giants and he quickly got up to speed in a reserve role, but also did really well in spot duty at LT. Originally this position was supposed to held by Eben Britton, but due to a back injury he’s now on IR. There is some debate, that regardless of injury to Britton, Whimper was probably going to beat him out. And for a no name guy, Guy Whimper is very athletic, which isn’t such a surprise considering he used to play LB early in college. I think he might be dealing with a couple of injuries so Sheard might see the QB some tomorrow.
The position that has given us the most problems this season is LG, where rookie Will Rackley from small school Lehigh. So the jump from a small school and position change from LT in college along with injuries to both of his hands have kind of hurt him. But he’s smart, getting healthy, and improving. He basically kept Haloti Ngata invisible when we played the Ravens. I expect by next year he should be a very good player, especially after he add some strength and weight. Until then we haven’t been as good in short yardage situations as we have in recent years.
How would you say your secondary is? (We could use a weak one to bolster Colt’s confidence.)

I have the best wife - ever.
The secondary has been pretty stellar.
Our offseason safety pickups, Dawan Landry and Dwight Lowery, have really helped the unit improve as a whole. Derek Cox has also been improving steadily at CB, and Rashaen Mathis has looked quite good. The only problem is Mathis just tore his ACL. Our third outside corner, William Middleton, filled in admirably for Cox when Cox was hurt, but I would definitely expect some drop-off in secondary play.
Outside of the Mathis injury, the most encouragement I can offer you is that we tend to give up yards to TEs. I find that seems to be the case with a lot of teams these days, though.
Sorry to say that the Jags secondary is not going to be a confidence booster for colt.
Mahlalie nailed it, but I would add Drew Colemans name in there as a solid DB used in nickle. He had a pick last week and has proven to be a play maker on D.
After watching Colt play his last couple of games
I imagine the back seven will be getting their hands on a lot of passes. And it wont all be Colts fault. Over the last 3 or 4 weeks you guys have an inordinate amount of passes dink off of their hands. And unlike in years past our LB’s and inside DB’s (NB/big nickel(3rd safety playing the nickel position) are very smart and tip a lot of passes and catch them.
Don’t wanna say we are gonna dominate this game, because we are going into this game with the same weak 3 and 6 record. But I definitely don’t think Colt is going to have a breakout game this week.
To put things in perspective, before Mathis got hurt, our worst player in our back 7 against the pass was someone many of you know well: Dawan Landry and I would wager he is playing better than he ever did in Baltimore because he’s not being asked to make up for some of Ed Reeds freelancing.
Spot on.
I would like to add that we have basically two more O-line men in Marcedes Lewis and Greg Jones. Watch Greg Jones block for a few plays, he is a beast at full back.
Easily
the baddest blocking FB in the league. He ragdolls guys like Woodley, Cushing, Ray Lewis, and pretty much anyone that gets in his way. He’s also the cousin of the recently laid to rest Boxer Joe Frazier. and he’s 260 lbs and built this way….

Sorry, that’s what he looked like before he got rocked up. He only weighs 230 there.
We are much better at run blocking
The line has been shacken up a lot by injuries this year, but we do have a person named Guy Whimper starting, to that’s basically all you need to know. Also don’t even worry about our passing offense, Gabbert suck right now. We cheer every time he completes 50% of his passes and throws for more than 100 yards, it’s kinda sad…
