Ask Revenge of the Birds
Hey guys, Joe from Revenge of the Birds for our weekly chat with this weekends opponent. After our horrible 1-6 start the Cards now have a chance to reach .500 and I will be attending this game so I'm very excited for Sunday.
If you have any questions about the Cardinals, leave them here and I will answer them along with anyone else from RotB that drops by. Feel free to set up one of these posts on our blog too.
And now for some quick notes.
To all of the Browns fans that dropped by to tell us signing Derek Anderson was a mistake, you were right. I never thought making him the starter was a good idea last year, but now everyone thinks it was a mistake when it was more like 50/50 back then.If you want to know why the Cardinals have been playing so well lately, it is because the defense has been outstanding. The Cardinals have been trying to become Steelers West since 07, and Ray Horton has the guys playing tough and aggressive AFC North style defense right now. Calais Campbell and Daryl Washington are also two outstanding players not many people know much about.
Patrick Peterson is a beast on Punt Returns, and he is developing well at corner too.
Kevin Kolb's status for the game is uncertain after a concussion he had on the first drive of the game last sunday, but Skelton has played well when he gets the chance to play. I feel confident in both of our Quarterbacks right now.
Some people think the Kolb trade was a bust and we should go with Skelton, I think that Kolb needs more time before you give a grade to this whole trade, and I think he will be much better next season after a full offseason and improving his timing with the receivers (something that has helped Skelton a lot is his time in the offense and his chemistry with Fitz compared to Kolb).
This is a fan-created post. Dawgs By Nature assumes no responsibility for the content listed.

Who plays right defensive end?

I've seen them move aorund sometimes, but Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell are the DE's, and they are doing a good job
Campbell has been the better pass rusher, Dockett gets double teamed more.

We loved Patrick Peterson over here and a lot of us wanted to take him if AJ Green wasn’t available — of course, in typical Browns style, neither guy was available.
I’ve heard he is not doing too well as a cover guy (though his punt returns are obviously great) — do you think he will develop as a top-notch shutdown corner, or do you think he is just going to be an average corner and above-average punt returner? Also, any reason why you are not using him as your kick returner too?

He did a great job in coverage last week
He hasn’t been consistently great in coverage, but he seems to get better each week and he is driven to be a great Corner in the NFL. I think he will be fine, corner is supposedly one of the tougher positions to adjust to in the NFL from what I’ve heard as well.
He did return some kicks in the Preseason, but LaRod Stephens-Howling is our main kickoff guy, he has done a good job with that (three touchdowns since he was drafted in 09) although the new rules have made it tougher on him. I think they don’t want to overwork PP either.

where did you hear that?
And I’ve seen a lot of you guys mention on your site that PP should be defensive rookie of the year. How can you say that given how horrible he has played at CB this year? Hasn’t he given up the most catching yards on the year of all CB’s?
by The Licensed Pessimist on Dec 14, 2011 12:02 PM EST up reply actions
Corner is arguably the second hardest position in the game. It obviously takes time to adjust to in the pro game.
Saying that corner is one of the tougher positions to adjust to in the NFL is one of the least controversial statements I’ve read here. Is there any statement that anyone makes that you don’t disagree with?

Considering the number of rookie CB’s who have come into the league and have not sucked immediately out the gate, I don’t think that can be stated definitively.
.
And the even bigger thing is the fact that whenever someone’s first round rookie is struggling, suddenly that position is the hardest in the NFL to adjust to. EVERY position takes time to adjust to. And I’m sure you know little about how difficult it is to play CB compared to any other position, but I’ll take your two cents into consideration.
by The Licensed Pessimist on Dec 14, 2011 12:48 PM EST up reply actions
You can not suck while a position is still hard to adjust to.
Champ Bailey was not anywhere close to a shutdown corner his first year. I don’t know if he was the #1 or #2 CB but he was either a poor #1 or a slightly above average #2 CB (going by FO metrics). Revis wasn’t a shutdown corner until his 3rd year. It took Nnamdi till his 4th. It took Antoine Winfield 3-4 years.
these guys all became shutdown CBs at some point in their careers, but none of them were good right out of the bat and most took a few years to adjust to.
Every position does take time to adjust to, but some more and less than others. Linebackers, pass rushers, and RBs seem to adjust quite quickly.

A lot of it is based on his punt returns
And again, he has not been horrible. More like decent but showing daily improvement and giving plenty of reason for optimism.

I don't think many of us at ROTB have said he deserves DROTY
He’s played well, but has had to adjust from college to NFL level talent. This year he’s been going up against each teams #1 WR, who are much more talented then what he faced in college. Obviously, he shouldn’t win DROTY, especially considering how well Von Miller has played in Denver, but he is making positive strides. The stats are misleading against Peterson, he’s played much better, especially the last two weeks, than they indicate

As a former Arizona resident I wanted to stop in here. Love the phoenix area. Is the fanbase finally steady? I lived there from 2006-2009 and when they were good everyone was a Cards fan but when they sucked people went back to their “family” team.
I know there is a Browns backers group that meets in about 3 different bars across Phoenix that is pretty good sized.
Anywho questions about the Cards: How is the offensive line, specifically RG and Center? DL pressure, do you get it or do you bring LB alot?
by Justin Kowalczyk on Dec 13, 2011 7:48 PM EST reply actions
They have actually sold out every game since the new stadium was built, but when things are going badly not everyone shows up.
Biggest problem is fans from other teams showing up, like with the Steelers and Cowboys games.
The guards and the center are the strength of our line, both tackle spots are the big problem.
Horton blitzes a lot, you will see some linebackers coming plenty of times. If the Steelers did it last week, Horton will probably use it again this week.

The Browns o-line acually did a great job against the steelers. Mccoy wasn’t fighting for his life, not perfect, but a lot better. And if the tackles are weaker. Hoping sheard will have a field day.

I was one of the ones that dropped by to say don’t count on DA. I made a statement about how he lambasted Cleveland in asshat fashion as he left and a poster thought I was attacking said poster personally. Made me laugh. Once I explained my comment a little better he understood and all was at peace.

Same for the Cards. I figured that division was up for grabs. What is the fanbases thoughts on Kolb and the high price you paid to get him?

It does seem like the people who thought it was a mistake are more vocal though.

Have you won more games with Skelton than Kolb? If so, is that a Tebowish mirage or is Skelton the better QB right now?
Skelton is 4-1 in games he has played extensively or started (including the come from behind this past week).
I watch the cards a bit and it seems like he is less afraid to take a chance down field. He basically throws it up and lets his playmakes make plays. Sometimes it works (this past week) sometimes it doesnt (first game against 49ers.) but the guy has a very very short memory and a pretty good arm.
Im sure a true Cards fan will have more though.
by Justin Kowalczyk on Dec 13, 2011 10:17 PM EST up reply actions
Good point
I think a lot of that came from Kolb’s old team. With Philly, he had a lot of smaller guys with more speed who couldn’t catch those jump balls and rip it away from the defender. Here, we have bigger and more physical receivers who can win those matchups on jump balls. Skelton is just more used to throwing to them.
Even Warner had to learn that even when it doesn’t look like Fitz is open, you still have to throw it to him and give him a chance because more often than not he will come down with it.

It is kind of similar to what has gone on with Tebow
During the 1-6 start, the defense was playing awful, they were also losing all the close games. Of their six losses, four of them came by totals of one point, three points, four points, and three points. So not all of it was on Kolb.
Then he had the turf toe injury during the Baltimore loss (30-27) where we actually had a big lead and the Defense fell apart after dominating the first half. Skelton came in after that, and then the Defense just became dominant, and in some of those wins for Skelton he did play poorly until around the end of the game just like Tebow.
Here is the best way to explain it. During the 1-6 start the Defense was giving up 26 points a game and they gave up a ton of big plays. But during this 5-1 streak the defense is giving up 17 points a game (take away the two safeties and a pick six and a punt return TD that I don’t think should be on the D and it gets even lower), they have also done a great job limiting the big play.
Just look at the second half against the 49ers, they only gave up two first downs in the second half. One was the 37 yard touchdown by Gore on their first play of the half, and the other came by a defensive penalty. Other than that, the Niners could do nothing.

Statiscally these guys are pretty close to even at this point except in wins
I am in the vocal minority that thinks we should be playing Skelton rather than Kolb. Probably half the comments on ROTB are related to mediocre qb play and what to do about it going forward.

What do you expect from Beanie Wells on Sunday? He seems to be so hit and miss.
Do you guys run more with Kolb or Skelton? Does it matter?
He has been gimpy for most of the season
Since he had a rough game against the 49ers, I’m guessing he will bounce back a little more this week.
The offense has been pretty balanced with running the ball all year long as well (both QBs). Much better than last year where it would just be pass on every down as soon as you fell back by any number of points.

A healthy Beanie is a good Beanie
When he was healthy (or at least healthy enough, when does Beanie not have some sort of ailment), Beanie was very good. Then he got a bad knee injury, and decided to play through it, in an attempt to shake of his injury prone reputation.
His play suffered while he was injured, as he was clearly slowed down by the injury, and couldn’t make good cuts like earlier in the year. After the first St Louis game, Beanie said he was feeling as good as he had in a month and played pretty good against the Eagles. 2 of the past four games we’ve played against the unreal run defense of the 49ers, and Beanie obviously struggled. In the games against St. Louis and Dallas, Beanie did very well. He was huge in the second half of the Dallas game, and obviously set the franchise record in St. Louis.
I would say Beanie is healthy now, and when he’s not playing against the ridiculous San Fran run defense, he should be alright. I expect anywhere from 60 to 100 for Beanie this weekend

Acho has been great for us
Starting of the year we had Clark Haggans and Joey Porter starting. Neither of them could get any pressure at all. When Porter went down, Acho stepped in, in front of 2nd year OLB O’Brien Schofield, and played remarkably. He’s a very bright kid (he won some sort of academic award last year) and does a great job in our scheme. I was excited when we picked him too.

I actually have a certain affection for the Cards. When they were in the Super Bowl, a blogger (I’m not sure if it was from your site or another) dropped some form of this line:
“If the Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team, then the Pittsburgh Steelers are White Trash America’s Team.”
With the fans like that, the Cards became my favorite team in the NFC.
