Shurmur vs. Mangini

There is a lot of sentiment for our former coach around here. I would like honest opinions from everyone about how you think the Browns may have fared this year if a coaching change wasn't made. I promise I won't call anyone bad names. Disclaimer: I know it's impossible to go back in time and change things or we'd all be with obedient supermodels (guy or girl kids). So let's hear it. If you don't care to comment about that, what is your number one draft priority?

This is a fan-created post. Dawgs By Nature assumes no responsibility for the content listed.

I think they would have been a couple of games better this year. First off, Shurmur has had no experience as a head coach while Mangini had plenty of experience. Experience does not guarantee better coaching, but Shurmur has struggled a lot as a new head coach. Also, the lockout gave Shurmur way less time to prepare the team for an entirely new system, something that would have been much less of an issue with Mangini.

agree a few of the close games that we lost by a couple bonehead moves might not have happened. Although if Daboll was still here I’m not sure the offense would have been any better.

Very true. That dude would be a bit easier to take seriously if he didn’t have such a raging hard on for Mangini. It just comes across as a tad bit unhinged.

I was watching the G4 channel with my friend and talking about how much Olivia munn’s hotness is overrated just because she is hip with “geek culture” and then the trailer for Underworld pops on and I pointed out how so much hotter Beckinsdale is.

Also, I don’t mind just pointing out randomly how overrated she is because she knows geek stuff and is on the daily show.

We’d win a few more games, but we’d be plateauing with a bunch of smart, but average, vets that Mangini would keep around. The FO and Eric couldn’t co-exist given their different philosophies. Hindsight 20/20, Holmgren should’ve axed Mangini after the 2010 season, but I fully understand why he didn’t.

Still can’t agree here. He gutted the loser, money grubbing crybabies and put a team on the field the would have continued to improve. He didn’t want to play McCoy or Mitchell. I swear to the football gods, if I was Lerner, I would can Holmgren and bring Mangini back. Call it my own stupid gut feeling, or whatever you will, but the team played with purpose until garbage time/injuries sacked the season.

I agree with getting rid of BE and K2, I just don’t agree that a D with the fact that a D where 5 starters (Fujita, Coleman, Barton, Elam, Brown) would be 30 or above in 2012. There is limited improvement there.

The D played well last year, but it was a bunch of veterans who were smart and familiar with the scheme. At that point, there is little room for those players to get better.

Mangini did not have say over player perseonnel, why would we think the rosters would be any different?

by Roger Dorn on Dec 19, 2011 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

presumably, we wouldn’t be running the “pure” wco and the 4-3, so the personnel would likely be somewhat different … though all hand-selected by heckert to work within the modified system that H&H and mangini agreed to run.

i would have loved to see mangini coach heckert talent. that would have been great.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 26, 2011 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

Let’s not forget that the reason Mangini was in control of personnel was because he was unable to work with his hand picked choice GM.

And that he also needed to clean house. He did a lot of the tearing down for us. Could we have salvaged more of the house? Sure. But Mangini is/was a “cleaner” and he did that quite well.

Mangini would have had a better record with the team this year; however, as bad as Shurmur has been at times, we have no way of knowing how much he’ll improve with a few years of coaching. We know he’s going to get at least 2 more years, so I’ll give you a complete answer to your question at that point.

by J. W. on Dec 19, 2011 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

So you’re saying that 5 years wasn’t enough for Crennel? How about Botch, did he resign to early? The players will always be in and out, that’s the nature of the NFL. Only two Coaches had less than 3 years, Palmer and Mangini. Sticking with something for the sake of sticking with it isn’t going to work either.

Mangini reminded me of an engineer – knew all the parts, specs, stats, ratios, etc. Ask him to actually build or use the machine though and…well saw what happened. If he was a good HC he would be coaching. He’s a good analyst so he analyzes. Daboll was his biggest mistake IMO.

Mangini was bland and workmanlike; Shurmur (as a coach; I do not know the guy personally) is the biggest unwashed, diseased, pustulent dong ever shoved down the throats of decent people. I watched his garbage here in St Louis – he might as well wear stonewashed jeans when calling his outdated 80s garbage. if he were fired on Par-Per-View I’d order it.

Get a good coach who doesn’t wear Jordache and listen to Duran Duran. Belichick beat that garbage offense 20 goddamned years ago.

I’m not as concerned with why he’s ineffective as the fact that he is. A lot of teams hire the ‘hot coordinator’ to take over a team. Why, then did the Browns hire the ‘cold coordinator’ who can’t run an effective NFL offense even given a very capable young QB in Sam Bradford? If the guy is a bad coordinator, why even bother trying to see if he’s a good coach?
