Ask A Raven fan

Hello Cleveland Browns fans. I am here to provide answers to any question about the Baltimore Ravens before they face your team on Sunday. I have questions of my own about your teams( see below)

1) The Browns defense ran a 3-4 type defense last year but how has it been since they changed to a 4-3 type defense? Is defensive coodinator Rob Ryan missed or is the current defensive coordinator better?

2) The Browns defense are ranked number one against the pass but what player in the secondary has stepped up?

3) What rookie has been the most impessive so far this season?

4) What do you think The Browns will need to help improve the offense & defense in 2012 draft? What college player?

This is a fan-created post. Dawgs By Nature assumes no responsibility for the content listed.

I think most are pleasantly surprised by how well we’ve transitioned to the 4-3. There’s a couple of reasons for that. We added Phil Taylor next to Tuba Rubin and they’ve controlled the middle and kept blockers off D’quell Jackson and he’s been a beast roaming the middle. Rookie Jabaal Sheard has been a really nice pass rusher with 4.5 sacks, good pressures and creating turnovers. He’s still learning the moves too. In time he will be trouble for a lot of RTs. Dick Jauron has been excellent as you would expect from a former HC transitioning to DC.

Obviously Joe Haden, former #1 pick has been a big part of the pass defense, but he’s also aided by solid, if aging Sheldon Brown and free agent Dmitri Patterson who has also been solid. A couple of rookies, Buster Skrine and James Dockery have shown promise. Skrine has the wheels to cover Torrey Smith but he may not see the field much. I won’t lie. Part of the reason we are #1 against the pass is because a lot of teams have run on us a lot but I would say we potentially have a top 10 pass defense who is very young and on the rise.

I would say Jabaal Sheard has been the best rookie, though Phil Taylor and Greg Little have had flashes of future greatness. Their inconsistency is holding them back a bit but they’re young. Little in particular has very little experience as a WR so he’s learning how to be a pro and a position that he’s only played a couple of years in college and didn’t play last year at all. Every one of our draft picks made the final 53 so we are really a team with a lot of youth who have all shown good stuff.

Next year most of us think we need a game breaking WR. Blackmon if we can, but after we sweep the division we’re probably going to be out of that. A lot of people want a new QB. I wouldn’t mind RG3 or Barkley but I don’t see Jones being much of an improvement over Colt and I also think Colt with weapons could be really good. We have a good RT who is always injured so we need one of them and possibly a Guard depending on how Jason Pinkston finishes up. Being such a young team, they were not so pretty at the start of the year but have played better as of late. Getting Pashos healthy has helped a lot. On Defense we probably could use a complementary true RDE opposite Sheard and maybe a LB to help Fujita and Gocong who are solid if not spectacular. A lot of people here don’t care for Shurmur but I’m not one of them. I think not having an OC hurt him this year and also I don’t think he has the players to fully implement the offense he wants to run.

To your questions-
1. Rob Ryan is missed by a few, but not most. Jauron plays a much more basic system then Ryan- which plays well with our younger players- and we did add better talent in the front 7.
2. The pass ranking is a mirage. Haden is the premier player in the secondary but outside that we are extremely average. If teams needed to pass on us, they could IMO, with ease for the most part. As evidenced by the run D ranking though, no teams really need to pass.
3. Jabaal Sheard hands down is our best rookie thus far. The hope is he continue to improves off of this and not go into Kameron Wimbley after this season. Phil Taylor can be a pretty good DT at times, but he has had a few games where he has disappeared completely and can be taken on 1-on-1. Little has a lot of receptions, but a lot of drops. I think his peak is a #2 Anquan Boldin type of a player; but we need a #1 in order to see that. Outside of those 3, Jason Pinkston LG has been pretty good, especially in the last couple of games. On the way up for sure.
4. RT, #1 WR for the O and DE and CB for the D. Other may say we need an impact OLB, but I dont think we’ll see them go that route. Maiava and Titus Brown both are young and promising. QB is the big question mark though. Do we draft a high guy and plop him in this situation with limited playmakers or do we give Colt a shot some legit options? Mixed opinions on Colt and weather he has “it” but everyone can agree there is a problem on the right side of the OL, and a problem of no big time WR.

Others have covered the Rook and 4-3 questions well but I disagree with Bobby about why our pass D is ranked so highly.

Yes looking at overall Rushing yards allowed the Browns D looks bad (ranked 29th) but look at the more important (IMO) Yards per attempt and the Browns are an average 19th at 4.3 YPA and we are 15th in terms of Rushing TDs allowed.

Mind you we have those middle of the road rankings while facing the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 21st, 26th and 30th rushing Offenses.

To say that teams could pass on us if they want to is false too IMO as we are 5th in completion % against and 2nd in passing TDs allowed.

I do have a question for the Raven fans. Is there any discussion among your fanbase about possibly drafting another QB? The Browns board is split on McCoy and yet statistically McCoys season is very similar to Flaccos

Flacco: 56% completion, 2737 yds, 13 TDs 8 INTS, 78.9 rating
McCoy: 58.5% completion, 2332 yds, 13 tds 8 INTS, 78.1 QB Rating.

Nope. Joe Flacco is here to stay and he’s having a little of a down year but the fact that most of his offensive weapons are young and inexperience it has hurt him stat wise. Joe Flacco lost two of his go to guys (Derrick Mason and Todd Heap ) I believe all ravens fans expected Flacco/offense to atleast have some ups and downs this year because of so many young/new players at the wideout/tight end position but recently the chemistry has been much better .

1) The defense has been better than I’d expected. I don’t know if they are better; they are younger, more talented, and way less consistent. Jauron has been a pleasant surprise for me. I hated him as a HC but he did well with the Bears as a DC and he’s doing pretty well for us. But I just love Rob Ryan—not his system per se, but his whole attitude.

2) Joe Haden has been our best player in the secondary by far. He’s still learning, and he’s still a little rough around the edges. He’s also looked worse after missing a game with a knee injury. If TJ Ward is playing, he’s pretty good too. Sheldon Brown is a vet, Dimitri Patterson is a pretty good nickel back, and Mike Adams is a versatile backup. Usama Young plays the run well.

3) To me, Jabaal Sheard has been the most impressive rookie. I don’t know how many sacks he has, but he’s pressuring thew QB often and he’s been decent against the run. He did really well in the Big East, but I didn’t expect his pass rushing ability to transfer to the NFL to well.

4) Andrew Luck, of course! We might draft a QB, as Colt has been back and forth between improving and regressing. We could also use at least another WR, or any “homerun threat” on offense, really. A RT would be really nice, or an outside linebacker to play in our 4-3. We could use a guard, a #2 CB, a RDE, or a FS too. We have a lot of needs but not many gaping holes.

Sheard has only like 4.5 sacks i think, but has 4 FF which is huge.

by -bobby- on Dec 3, 2011 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

1) I preferred Rob Ryan, but I think he’ll be a HC next year anyway. I didn’t like the Jauron hiring at all, but he’s done a great job so far. Just need to fix the run D

2) Joe Haden. I think he’s a top 5 CB. Absolutely shut down.

3) I like Phil Taylor. Jabaal Sheard has been great too. Neither will likely be pro bowler players, but they are good starters.

4) in order: WR, o-lineman (need everything but LT and C, although a good backup LT would be nice), LB, DE, CB, DT (depth), FS

I’d be stunned if we didn’t take a WR. I could easily see Michael Floyd of Notre Dame coming here. Not sure where he’ll go in the draft. Too early. OLB as our other 1st rounder. It’s not that far fetched that we take a WR with both of them. Other than Greg Little, none of them are part of the future.

I guess there's only one thing left to do.....win the whole ******* thing. - Major League

3rd round is the highest Heckery has ever drafted a LB. I dont think he bucks that trend anytime soon when we have solid starters (not “impact” but solid) and decent depth in Brown and Maiava. Too many other holes like RDE, another secondary player (CB or FS would help the whole unit out so I wont limit it to one or the other. Also really hope Skrine can play more next year but I doubt thats too likely). OL is a higher priority then LB, and I would argue QB as well. We need a consistent RT whos not always on the injury report, and we need to upgrade Lauvao.

Mangini apologist by default.

I’m speaking about his innate accuracy, not how well that innate accuracy is translating on the field.

Do you think your surprise losses were do to playing flat or did those teams find an area of weakness to expose?

How do you think you would game plan to beat the Ravens?

Do you think your surprise losses were do to playing flat or did those teams find an area of weakness to expose?

I think everyone still is unsure why. The team seemed prepared, but offensively we definitely came out flat. The offense as a whole struggled in those game. All those teams got a ton of pressure with only 4 rushers because our line struggled early on and for some reason our OC abandoned the run and dropped back nearly every time. In the seattle game Rice only got 5 carries and I believe in jacksonville he only got 8 or 9. The line was definitely a problem early on, but has looked solid the last couple weeks since Grubbs has returned. Run blocking still needs to get going though.

How do you think you would game plan to beat the Ravens?

Offensively running a ball controlled, balance offense. Our D at times this year has seemed a little gassed late in the game and that showed big in the Seattle and Tennessee game that we lost. Both offenses were able to control the clock. Don’t abandon the run and try to hit on quick routes. Colt probably won’t have much time to throw and at times we give a little too much cushion . Because how young our O is they usually take a little time to get going, so by keeping the ball it can limit the rhythm early on of our offense. Our OC has been inconsistent this year as far as keeping the offense balanced. He’s done a good job the last two weeks, but as mentioned, he abandoned the run early in all those losses when we never were out of any of those games.

I’m not sure how Rubbin is an insult. Or anything other than a small, easy to ignore spelling error.

Jabaal Sharted? Weak. I wasn’t insulted, I just think it’s a weak effort. Aren’t we on the same side here?

I didn’t think you were insulted, I was just furthering the discussion on the weakness of his post.

easy to ignore spelling error.

At first glance, I actually read it: “Tuba Rubin and Jabaal Sheard….you guys can’t lose.”
