Browns - When will it change?

I have been a Brown's fan since I was old enough to understand the game. It is very disheartening to continue to see upper management blaming the quarterback for the teams problems. If someone would draft an offensive line that could block and receivers that could catch the ball, we might be in better shape and in playoff contention. Don't blame Colt when he has to run for his life. Gee, Charlie Frye might still be the quarterback if he had protection.

Wow I just don’t really know where to start. First of all, Colt has all day to throw sometimes and then he miss throws. He also is way to jumpy in the pocket. He moves around as soon as he hears a footstep. He is 6 feet tall, behind 6 feet 7 inch lineman, who he cannot see over. He doesn’t lead receivers well and he stares them down, giving the defenders a heads up as to where he’s going with the ball. That said, our receivers cannot get open, and our line blocks just long enough for a good play. The receivers take too long to get open, but McCoy can’t be waiting until they are open to release the ball. Someone said before that in College you throw to open receivers and in the NFL you throw to someone who is going to be open. Colt can’t make those reads fast enough to succeed in the NFL.Our O-line is giving him time, but Colt takes too long. You can’t block a defense forever. So yes, you should blame Colt, not just Colt, but mostly him. He’d probably be a great backup, he just can’t get it done as a starter. This is also coming from somebody who doesn’t want a new Quarterback, but I’ve been convinced by DBNer’s that we need a new Quarterback.

You’re crazy if you think Shurmur is the worst.

All four are better than Shurmur.

by mgtbfb on Dec 26, 2011 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

and the sad part is, Shurmur is in his first year and some of these guys have had 3+ seasons.

I think if Spags can’t turn it around next season, regardless of the talent level, he is gone. He may be gone this year.

I do not see it changing anytime soon, I am sorry to say. H&H’s first 2 years and they haven’t even tried to field a competitive team yet. Year one was give the coach a chance. Year two was lets not bother getting any free agents lets see what we kind of talent we have. So I expect next year they tell us they can’t fix it all in one year (even though it’s been 3). Then maybe in year 4 we can be a .500 team if all goes well.

It’s the right way to build a franchise. It doesn’t happen over night.

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 21, 2011 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

Hard to sign big name FAs during a rebuild, and pretty much pointless. Hard to say during the end of one season (before re-signings, FAs, the draft, etc.), but I expect our ceiling to be about 7 wins next season. I think we’ll be competing for the division the year after. As the adage goes: Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I disagree. While looking for starters in FA is not wise but building depth at the non-skill positions is what should have been done. Instead when we have an injury we scramble to pull a guy that has been cut or is on a practice squad and they become a starter for us. Right now we have no depth any position. So sitting around seeing what we have has put us 2 years behind where we should be.

Say what you want about H&H but IMO this is a major error in judgement that Randy needs to seriously look at when the season is over. Couple that with both of them thinking that we had a competent receiving core this year and if it were me I would make it clear that they had 1 year to straighten this mess out. The Browns have shown 12 Years of total incompetence at every level and shows no sign of changing anytime soon.

This is the wrong line of thinking. The current Browns have shown 2 years of incompitence. 1 year if you count the coaching change. You can’t blame H,H,&S on the failures of Kotnkus(sp?), Mangini, Crennel, Savage, Davis, Palmer, and (I forget who Palmer’s GM was).

I would make it clear that they had 1 year to straighten this mess out.

Good thing you aren’t our owner. Again, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

if it were me I would make it clear that they had 1 year to straighten this mess out.

Whoa, slow down shooter.

H&H aren’t looking to build a good team, they are looking to build a good “system”. There is a big difference there, and you should be excited. I’ll explain what I mean.

The good franchises in this league have a system, not just teams. The Steelers (puke), Ravens (double puke), Packers and Patriots are all “system” teams.

The front office finds the best players they can, and the coaches then find the best way to use them (Remember, when Ben Watson was in NE, they never threw to him, now they only throw to TE’s and Welker). It’s a system from the top down.

So when the Browns choose a man who is given complete control of franchise, who then picks a guy who can evaluate talent and they then choose a coach, it’s going to take time. It takes time because it needs to be done the right way. If you don’t, you end up starting over every four years.

Trust me, it will suck. We will go through growing pains like this season, and when we draft a rookie QB, he will take some time as well. But we will get there.

Just got to be patient.

I think they wanted to see what we had in MoMass and Robo in an offense that was more suited to what the Browns plan on doing in the future.

Little bit of sunshine pumping there. They had Robo as the starter at the quarter pole, then cut him a few weeks later to get some re-tread RB on the roster.

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 23, 2011 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I know. I was disappointed in the Robo issues because it showed a continued trend in the mis evaluation of the position. A guy in his 3rd year, 2 under Heckert, and he gets dumped ahead of Carlton Mitchell who has yet (?) to catch a pass this year after being the starter. Oh well, live and learn – good luck in the playoff final.

If Lerner hasn’t gotten it right yet, what makes you think he ever will? I trust Holmgren’s football intuition a hell of a lot more than Lerner’s. If Randy simply decided to abandon ship with this front office after 2 seasons and start all of again I would have a hard time following our team next season…Alright so that’s a lie, but you get my point. Whatever the case is with H&H, there’s not really anything else to do other than to continue being patient and see how this works out.

What do you all think of this for making an impact and giving us weapons that teams fear: First round, get RG3, second pick, go for Floyd at WR to be your main target over the middle and for third downs. Then you get your RT. In free agency, you bring in Desean Jackson. Now you have three wide receivers that can make plays with Little as your third. You have weapons finally and a line that should be one of the better ones and your quarterback that is a threat.

by Brownie4ever on Dec 23, 2011 6:59 AM EST reply actions

I personally think Floyd is too much like Little. I don’t think he will be a major deep threat.

We need a burner.

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 23, 2011 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

You are sooo right. It would be great if the guy was at least 6’4’ , too. With a great vertical leap and godlike hands. OH, wait! Pinch me, I’m dreaming!!!

by OldTimeDawg on Dec 29, 2011 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

Well in 12 years, 5 Head Coaches, 4 GM’s, I can’t count the offensive Co, the different philosophies and absolutely horrible drafts until recent. And you wind up here.
So blame Colt McCoy all you want, but this Team from the owner all the way down is to blame. So draft another QB, and when the O line still sucks, the D Line gets pushed 10 yards downfield, wideouts are dropping 4 balls a game and the Head Coach is still the O Coordinator, it will be the QB’s fault again.

by Grockcubs on Dec 23, 2011 10:39 PM EST reply actions

Definitely a good point. I think the Owner is partly to blame and I don’t think you can argue that. But my counter would be that if the issues are just the fact that changing HC’s, OC’s and systems are solely to blame and not QB’s, then Frye, Holcomb, Couch, etc would have gone to another team and been successful. I don’t think anyone can argue that they were good QB’s. I like Colt personally, but I see his limitations. I don’t blame him solely, but he would not start on almost any other team in the league. The goal isn’t mediocrity, it’s to put together a successful offense now.

by Brownie4ever on Dec 24, 2011 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Couch is a bad example. He got shell-shocked behind that awful excuse for an o-line.

by North Coast Flea on Dec 24, 2011 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

What this organization needs is a coach and GM that will ignore or tell the Cleveland fans and media to shut up every time a first, second or third year QB has a bad game or two. It’s going to happen to everyone and we’ve run too much talent out of town for having a rough patch.

by HenryDawg on Dec 25, 2011 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

Also, I wouldn’t look at Floyd as a deep threat. In my example (or silly hope), you would have Floyd as a possession receiver, and Jackson as your deep threat. Little can fix his drops. He breaks tackles, he blocks, he’s physical and aggressive. Plus he would be your third receiver in that example.

by Brownie4ever on Dec 24, 2011 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Looks like Little has fixed his drops.

by HenryDawg on Dec 25, 2011 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

Couch probably is a bad example. I always liked him, and I think he could have been good. He had his moments here even. To the main point though, I think this off season you can really strengthen the offense and put fear into defenses by putting talented players together on offense. Strengthen the line, draft and add talent from free agency on offense. You can turn this around. It’s not impossible. Everyone wants a deep threat, Jackson would be that. RG3 threatens with his running, his strong arm and knowledge of the game. Little breaks tackles and can be a beast. A new drafted receiver from the first round should be a threat. Also, bring Hillis back for a one year contract. He looks healthy now, and we need him. That should turn it around.

by Brownie4ever on Dec 25, 2011 4:09 PM EST reply actions

I am tired of all the excuses. Look at all the quarterbacks that we have had since the Browns came back. All of them had the potential, but how many times can a person be “hit” before they become “gun shy”. I remember when Belichick was hated and run out of Cleveland. Gee, how many Super Bowl rings does he have?
It’s time to spend the money and draft “Talent.” If the talent is not there in the positions needed then go to “free agency.”
You talk about creating a “system.” You have to have a core of “talent” before any system can work. Not has-bins from other teams. We had a chance, this last draft, to get a top notch, deep threat. But NO, we traded down and got WHAT?
How many years will we have to wait before we see a real contender? Not a pretender!!!

by kingkong55 on Dec 27, 2011 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

Have you been paying attention for the past two offseasons?

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 27, 2011 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Well we were able to get a solid DT to go along with our other young, solid DT. And the other portion of the trade still remains to be seen. We can easily find an impact player near the same draft position as last year.

Julio Jones has been good with Atlanta, but not break out good like say AJ Green has been. And Green is playing in an offense where he’s the focal point compared to Jones who’s just there as a supporting member. Jones certainly would have improved our offense, but to what extent?

And then our D-line would be a lot shittier and we probably would have given up the league’s single-game rushing yards record to another Raven.

I agree another QB is not the answer… we have a decent OL except for some spots here and there. our receivers is the problem. then we have no run offense to keep people honest when it comes to running the ball. we get mad at our defense but they are on the field for ever! some times the best defense is a good offense!
