Around the Pound (3/11): Browns at Jimmy Smith's Pro Day, Team Hurt by Labor Situation
In today's edition of Around the Pound, we take a look at the Browns being one of the teams at the Pro Day for cornerback Jimmy Smith, James Walker talking about how the Browns are the team that will be most hurt by the labor situation, and more.
Browns Attend Colorado Pro Day for CB Jimmy Smith
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Cleveland Browns attended the Pro Day of cornerback Jimmy Smith and did not disappoint.
Smith had a "solid" workout at his pro day, according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt. "Smith is a talented guy who needs to work harder and get in better shape and take these workouts seriously," Brandt said. "Because he does have talent, but he sometimes doesn’t play up to it. He’s definitely the No. 3 corner in this draft behind Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara."
The latest projections have Smith going anywhere from the late first round to the early second round. It would seem like a great defensive upgrade if the Browns were to grab a stud defensive lineman with the No. 6 overall pick and then score Smith in the second round.
AFC North Labor Impact on the Browns
ESPN's James Walker says the Cleveland Browns will be one of the most affected teams by the league's labor situation. As most of you should know by now, the players union decided to decertify earlier today. Walker's reasons are simple: they are making significant system changes on both sides of the football with new coaching staffs:
A West Coast offense is all about timing, and McCoy will not get the usual amount of offseason preparation to learn the new playbook and work with his coaches and teammates. Whenever a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, Cleveland needs to make up for lost time ASAP.
Randy Lerner Makes Forbes' List of Billionaires
Forbes came out with their list of billionaires, and three members of the Lerner family, including the Browns' owner, are on the list. There are only two other billionaires listed for Ohio.
Off-Beat Notes
- I finally watched Inception the other day on DVD and loved it. Besides the concept itself being fascinating, the cast worked well together and I loved the sound mixing/editing throughout the movie.
- I hate to sound like a broken record by complaining about the weather, but come on...what is this, Cleveland? Last year today it was a high of 71 degrees. This year, after initially projected to have some warm weather, a sudden snow storm pelted us again for around 8-12 inches in less than 24 hours.
- That wasn't even the biggest story of the day: the devastation in Japan was unbelievable to see. I can't imagine having to go through anything that is even a fraction of what they had happen there.

Well, at least we picked a good year to blow everything up.
Dawgs by Nature -- where Mike Holmgren, apparently, 'did some good things'.

Grasping for positives here. Maybe an abreviated season just means a faster long term building process for us- less risk to Hilis’s knees, Ward’s shoulder, etc?
If I was a team in “the window of opportunity” I would be upset; if one on the tail end of that window (San Diego?)- massively pissed off.

Colt should call up one of the ex QBs who is familiar with the WCO. Am sure they could gat a few basic plays worked out.
colt and bradford are buddies, right? can’t colt call him up and get some of the basics of shurmer’s offense?

Yes, they’re good friends Also, Bradford is in his own spot right now facing a new offensive scheme and both of them are smart as a whip. You can bet they’ll be talking to each other and comparing notes.
Regardless, you can also bank on the fact that Colt already has a playbook from Shurmur and hasn’t seen the last ‘revision’ to that playbook.

Sheldon is getting up there in age. Nothing
wrong with backing him up. Who knows if he’ll be 100% all season

It is not a bad thing to point out that CB is not one of the top needs right now for the Browns. Having said that, if Peterson is there in the first round and Green isn’t, I think the Browns would be foolish not to take him.

LSU had two gread DBs in the past two years. Curtis Taylor in 09 and Harry Coleman in 10, why do we have to hold out until we can dish out the money?

It’s pretty hard to even fathom what’s going on in Japan right now. I’ve experienced many earthquakes living in CA. The best one was the 7.1 Loma Prieta (Frisco) back in ‘89.
Japan got rocked pretty good. An 8.8 followed by a terrifying tsunami? WTF!! How can you not feel bad for those people? I’ve been in Awe for two days.
No Smith in the 2nd. We need a lineman in that round.
It’s not a lie if you believe it.

I would’ve been hitting it through the fields in my Honda if I would’ve seen that wall of water. Sorry cows.
If you haven't watched Inception, do it now. Right now.

I’ve got a cousin, and close friend, stationed in MCAS Iwakuni, Yamaguchi in Japan. He’s a LCpl, Marine MP. No one has talked to him directly since the disaster, but I have heard officials said the U.S. military in Japan escaped relatively unscathed with no reported deaths or injuries. Presumably, our U.S. armed forces over there are incredibly busy dealing with the disaster and aiding the relief effort.
