Why the Cleveland Browns May Not Take the Chance on Da'Quan Bowers' Knee
Let's not have another Hardesty injury happen...

Logic fail in this article. He is comparing ligament tears with a torn meniscus? That is absurd. All knee injuries created equal? The success rate on a torn meniscus would be in excess of 99%. You sew the damn thing up and it is as strong as new. Then you check to see if there is arthritis scarring and if so – you stay away. If not – and he is the best – go for it. The chances of finding a player who has played significant football at a high level without any dings is prox 1%

This isn’t exactly the case. If the tear is minor, sure they can sew it up or even leave it alone and just move on. If the tear is bad, the meniscus has to be removed, because it won’t heal on its own. When I tore up my knee I was very lucky to keep my meniscus.

Logic fail huh? My logic says you fail because you don’t get the comparison of two players who are coming into the NFL with injury issues.
If you want to take another chance on a player who could go down with another injury, then so be it, but you will never have a career in the scouting dept period.

Just because player A has injuries, doesn’t mean we have to pass on player B.
I’m not a huge fan of drafting players with past injuries, especially if they are major. But at some point in time, almost every football player sustains an injury. Predicting them in the future is impossible.
Courtney Brown never missed a game in college. Missed 33 games in five seasons here in Cleveland.
Antonio Cromartie missed his last year of college with a ACL tear. Has missed one game over a 5 year career.
I won’t knock Bowers because of Hardesty.

Agree to disagree then…at No. 6 the Browns have to knock it out of the park with their pick.

Sure they do, but we can’t hold the sins of the past against the future guys.

True but it should still be in the back of the mind of Heckert.
We shall see with Bowers’ workout today though I am a bit disappointed with his 40-yd times so far (4.85). Could be due to his knee recovery though.

why should it be in the back of his mind. I see a few reasons it shouldn’t be an issue
a) significantly different injuries and different overall injury history (hardesty and multiple injuries
b) different positions
c) we don’t know yet if hardesty was a “bad pick” because of injuries. we are only judging from 1 year of data, which isn’t nearly enough.

your whole argument is a fallacy!
40 times are very important for defensive linemen. /sarc*
*And 4.85 ain’t that bad at all for a guy of his size.

10 yard splits matter much more. Plus lateral agility and possibly vertical leap (its part of the SackSEER stat and supposedly predicts lower body explosiveness). He was fine in these areas.

Definitely a reply fail.

TJ Ward. People seem to forget that his injury history was almost as concerning as Hardesty’s and some teams had taken him off their draft board altogether. The reason he was not projected higher was because of injury.
That one kind of worked out for us; didn’t it?

Does that mean it’s worth the risk at sixth overall, because TJ Ward worked out the year before?
You’ve got to make the call on an entirely individual basis.

right, I don’t think TDSH was saying otherwise. I think he was just trying to point out that you shouldn’t just pick one example to use as your comparison when there is an equally obvious counter-example.

Bowers workout today cemented what I already believed.
Something doesn’t smell right in this. His lack of production at times, his lack of explosiveness and what seems to be a bigger knee issue than previously believed (microfracture?).
If he is there in the second, which I think is a small chance, I would be interested. But not at six, not even if he was healthy.
I’ve come around to this as well. I’ve knocked Watt and Acho for not appearing to be very quick off the ball, and it looks like Bowers isn’t much better.
