With the 12th pick in the 2011 Dawgs By Nature Community Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select...
Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
This selection and write-up was made by Simmsinns:
It’s really simple, Minnesota needs a quarterback. We’ve seen what these guys can do with great quarterback play and we’ve seen what happens when they lack it. The Vikings head coach, Leslie Frazier has even gone on record saying to the media that he was "interested in finding the next Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco this offseason." With those things in mind and Cam Newton off the board, this pick was really a no-brainer. He has a quick release and great arm strength. He’s also that ideal size and frame for an NFL QB, but doesn’t lack the mobility and can extend plays. He’s generally the most accurate with short-to-intermediate throws.
I think if you can rely on Adrian Peterson enough, Gabbert won’t be asked to be the hero, even in the wake of the 2-season Favre experiment. If this guy can continue to do what he does well at the next level, he should be just fine. I think the Vikings know that if they hit the mark with a QB, and they are the next Matt Ryan, then this pick is an absolute homerun. It’s a lot less of a risk at 12th overall, than say if Buffalo reached at 3rd or even San Fran at 7th. If he’s on the board when the Vikings are picking, he is it.
I agree with this pick. I still like the Vikings' defense and their supporting cast on offense, but they need to start fresh at the quarterback position after the whole Brett Favre debacle last season. I'll be surprised if Gabbert is on the board and they don't take him.
The Detroit Lions are on the clock next (email has been sent to BuenosAires_Dawg).

I think they stick with Webb and see what he can bring with a full season under his belt. I think these guys are starting to age in the LBs and DBs. I think they go defense this year.
If you haven't watched Inception, do it now. Right now.
The pick makes sense but I agree with you. They’ll probably go QB later.
It’s not a lie if you believe it.

IMO, Gabbert is the absolute best case scenario for Minnesota and they should take him if they can. I don’t think Webb has shown enough to warrant passing on a franchise QB prospect like Gabbert. They’re built to win now, and I don’t think Webb can do it at this point in his career.

Perfect scenario for Minnesota. He’s the only QB I like this season, and think Cam as a risk is highest for this particular team of potential pickers because of how “win-ready” the Vikings are. If they take him and he busts, they’re screwed for years. They get a QB that can win-now (which I think Gabbert gives the best opportunity thus far) and they’re set for another few years, at the least.

Why not? I advise that they will be much happier with Kaepernick though. More their cup of tea, I think.
actually i’m hoping kaepernick (thanks for spelling it for me moon) falls to the 5th and the browns pick him up. i think he’d be solid for them/us/we….whatever
I would like to see more of what Joe Webb can do. I think he has huge upside. I continue to be surprised that Mallet isn’t getting more consideration – he seems like a prototypical modern pocket passer.
Webb may not be ‘their guy’ – if you believe reports from Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press…
(talked about in this PFT article):
…the Vikings reportedly considered trying to pry Kyle Orton away from the Broncos
… Walters quotes unnamed Vikings insiders as saying that Webb is nowhere close to being an effective starter.
…
That would come as news to Webb, who said last month that he thinks he’s well-prepared to be the starting quarterback. But while Webb views himself as a starting quarterback, it seems more likely that the Vikings will bring in someone else to start. We just don’t know who that "someone" is.

By that logic, The St. Louis Rams should not have drafted Sam Bradford. They drafted Keith Null in the 6th round the year before. Like Webb, he was an upside guy from a small school that looked overwhelmed at the QB position. Guess what? Null was cut the next year. While Null did do worse statistically, is a small statistical difference (a few points in QB rating in a small sample size) enough to be the difference between cutting a guy and passing up a top QB? I personally don’t think so.

Intensive Purposes? I could care less...
your whole argument is a fallacy!
i don’t think Mallett will be a successful pro QB unless he spends a lot of time sitting and learning. He self-destructs when there is pressure in his face (like against Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl) and he has character concerns too. He has a cannon, but he’s a statue and he can’t handle facing a pass rush. That screams “BUST!” to me, because the standing strategy to beat a young QB is to pressure them, and he has nothing to counter a pass rush with.
