An 18 game season?
What would happen during an 18 game season? Records thought to be unbreakable would, with 2 extra games, be broken. Mike Bell, given enough carries, could probably break 1000 100 yards rushing. Injuries would go up even more, which would probably end up making Roger Goodell put the quarterbacks in a steel cage, the receivers would be untouchable until they've made the catch, braced themselves for the hit and yelled "GO" to the defender. James Harrison would be fined every week just because. (Yes I'm exaggerating a bit).
What do YOU think of an 18 game season? I, personally would hate it. Vote in the poll!

On one hand I hate the idea of all those records being broken just because of a longer season. On the other hand I feel like adding two more games could keep my playoff hopes alive until maybe November.
Seriously. For me, in terms of my hatred, the Broncos are right behind the Steelers and Ravens. I’m sure others echo this sentiment.

The name "Browncos" was clever, though, right? Anyone?
No but I’ve been a Broncos since I was born in Colorado, (my dad claimes he’s the one who taught Terrell Davis the Mile High Salute) and I became a HUGE Hillis fan in 2008. When he was traded, I decided to follow the Browns, and I’m pretty much a Brown’s fan now.
Hey, it’s not as bad as being a Colts/Patriots fan, right?

all the the things you listed in your post are going to happen regardless of the number of games played. There is an emphasis on safety that is going to change the game we love no matter what even thoguh it’s a CHOICE to play football for a living and a very lucrative one. I don’t wanna see someone die on the field but there are far more hazards jobs out there that pay a fraction of what the NFL does but they aren’t televised (yet) so no one is up in arms about the health risks. All these players are given a free college education to better themselves but few choose to apply that because the money and lime-light of the NFL is too attractive.

also, I’m in favor of 18 games. I love football and could watch it year round. I think the fact that games are once a week will make it work. The other major sports should take a lesson from football because there are too many games in the other sports and it’s make games seem irrelevant. Only down side of 18 is that it would be the nail in the coffin of the every-down back which I personally miss there is just something impressive about a guy taking 30+ carries in a game seemingly getting stronger with each carry. I guess i just miss those performances.

In the other sports though you have a much better idea of who the best teams really are at the end of the season, and thus the teams that are actually deserving make the playoffs. An 18 game baseball season would be crazy.

18 for baseball is crazy yes but so is 162… and it doesn’t help show who the best teams are…or maybe you predicted a Rangers-Giants world series…
please use the reply button.
And no, 162 isn’t ridiculous. I’m not sure what your point is with the Rangers and Giants. They proved over 162 games that they deserved to be in the playoffs. In baseball the nature of the game dictates that there will be much smaller variation between good teams and bad teams. Football teams routinely go 12-4 or better, and 4-12 or worse, so the variance between a great team and a bad team is large. In baseball, no team has ever won 75% of their games. The very best teams in a given year win 100 games, and even that doesn’t happen every year. the worst team might lose 100. While the difference between 100-62 and 62-100 might seem huge, it isn’t as pronounced as the difference between the very best and very worst football teams.
After 16 games it is clear who the best 12 teams in the NFL are, with some debate about the bottom few. In baseball, even after 162 games, it’s not always clear who the best 8 are.

I remember playing middle school football. I played receiver, and I took a huge pounding over the 6 games we played. I had various bumps and bruises all season long, in addition to a messed up hamstring (To this day I don’t know if it was pulled, torn or what. From what I read, it sounded like it was a tear, but I don’t know if I could’ve played all 6 games with a torn hammy)
All I know is that I needed a long time to recover from a 6 game season. I can’t imagine playing 18. If you think about it, (if they started the season at the same time) the Super Bowl wouldn’t be until late February. Organized team activies begin pretty darn soon after that. I don’t think that’s long enough of an offseason for injured players to recover.
The average NFL career is somewhere right around 3 years. By adding two games over a season, they’re taking away a lot of a player’s career.

I think the current plan involved doing away with two preseason games.

It still effectively adds two games for most of your 1st string.
