NFL – Ex-Brown’s QB Brady Quinn Deserves a Fair Shot in Denver.

It appears that ex-Brown and current third-string Denver Broncos quarterback, Brady Quinn left one quarterback controversy behind in Cleveland and into some new Mile High mayhem in Denver.
The former Notre Dame standout and part-time starter in Cleveland, Quinn is currently listed third on the official Denver Bronco’s depth chart. With the current lockout in place, teams are unable to add or trade away players to help themselves improve.
For the Bronco’s it appears that they are ready to go in a different direction and deal starter, Kyle Orton, whom was 11-17 under center in two years.
If recent media statements are true that the upper brass is not sold on Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow under center, then that leaves Quinn as the de facto starter for the Broncos.
Why make the case for an inaccurate and inmature border-line bust, who has failed to live up to the 2007 pre-draft hype?
You can thank the lack of talent and dysfunctional front office of the Cleveland Browns for making a case for Brady Quinn in Denver.
Ironic indeed.
While the 27-year old Dublin, Ohio native was originally projected as a top-five pick in 2007, he slid all the way down to #22, only to be drafted by his boyhood team, Quinn didn’t exactly endear himself to then coach, Romeo Crennel by holding out during training camp.
Quinn would eventually sign a five-year deal worth $20.2 million, with performance incentives that would push the deal to $30 million if he took 70% of the snaps under center.
Fast forward to 2009, and enter new head coach, Eric Mangini, Quinn was the projected starter for Mangini during training camp, but would be yanked in favor of Derek Anderson after going 6-for-8 for a meager 34 yards and throwing an interception in a 34-3 rout at the hands of Baltimore.
Quinn would show some flashes of promise by having his best game as a pro by throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-37 loss to the winless Detroit Lions.
Quinn would finish the 2009 season in Cleveland by throwing for 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns , seven interceptions for a QB rating of 67.2 and completing only 53.1 percent of his passes.
The highlight of his career was leading the Browns to a 13-6 upset over the defending Super Bowl champion, Pittsburgh Steelers.
In that game, Quinn would go 6-of-19 for 90 yards.
Is it honestly fair to blame Quinn when he was the victim of a inept rookie offensive coordinator in Brian Daboll?
Quinn suffered from a lack of talent in the skill positions as the Browns would trade Pro Bowl wide receiver, Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets and tight end, Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay.
Starting running back, Jamal Lewis was on the wrong side of 30 and with the exception of Joshua Cribbs and Mike Furrey, Cleveland had two rookies at the wide receiver spot in Brian Robiskie and Mohammed Massaqoui.
Enter new Browns President, Mike Holmgren in 2010, Quinn is traded to Denver for Broncos running back, Peyton Hillis a 2011 sixth-round pick and a conditional pick in 2012.
Now in Denver, Quinn would boldly proclaim himself the starter over incumbent, Kyle Orton. Quinn would suffer more tough luck when Denver decides to draft Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow.
Seemingly in the wrong place at the wrong time, Quinn had to sit on the bench and watch Orton throw for 3,653 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Quinn would also have to witness "Tebowmania" envelop Denver without getting a chance to step on the field.
While Denver seems to have a more competent front office in general manager, Brian Xanders, and Hall-of-Fame QB, John Elway as vice president of football operations running the show, it appears that Quinn’s tough luck from Cleveland followed him west.
The coach that traded for him, Josh McDaniels gets fired after leading the Broncos to a 4-12 season and the man he was traded for, Peyton Hillis rushes for over 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns, and lands the cover of Madden ’12 cover.
Now, it appears that Quinn may be on the move again, up the depth chart of quarterback.
With Denver shopping Orton around during the lockout and new head coach, John Fox hinting that Quinn has a shot at being the starter, Quinn will finally have a valid and fair chance to become a true starter in the NFL.
Unlike Cleveland, Denver has talent to surround and help Quinn in Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckwalter at running back and much better talent at wide receiver in NFL receiving yards leader, Brandon Lloyd,Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney and Demaryius Thomas.
With the exception of San Diego, Quinn does not have to face two hard-hitting Super Bowl heavyweights in Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the division every year.
For all of Quinn’s critics, myself included, Quinn may have questionable arm strength and accuracy issues, but Quinn was also the victim of constant upheaval and a weak supporting cast in Cleveland and would be a great fit in Denver based on being around better talent and a weaker division.
Those who choose to dismiss Quinn’s chances of being the starter for the Broncos, may soon come to realize that he is a legitimate dark horse in a two-way race.

What I mean is that if you’re truly the starter and the team is committed to you then you get to stay in past halftime of the Baltimore game. 2 games really isn’t a “fair” shot to see if someone is a starter.
However, I don’t think Mangini was wrong for pulling him. He ws bad.

Quinn was totally – but not surprisingly – mismanaged during his time in Cleveland. If I remember correctly, he got all of two (maybe three) days notice before his first regular start. I expect he will do better with the situation in Denver just as he would have done better given the organization now in place here.
All in all, I think the trade worked out better for us since we picked up a marquis RB and had a young Colt ready, willing and able to show leadership when opportunity called.

You could prolly figure it out if you wanted to. It’s about taking care of your young QB and setting him up for success. Are you suggesting that his short notice and preparation helped him to have a good day? Our coaches tried to get cute with the most important position on the field and never had the cojones to commit to one guy.
The decision for Quinn to play in the Denver game seemed to have been made reluctantly by Crennel as he dutifully did the bidding of whomever was really calling the personnel shots that season. Most fans figured it out at the time and gave Quinn a lot of slack in their expectations because of it. RAC was a nice guy and smart defensive coach but he was in way too deep as a head coach and he totally fumbled in the development on Quinn.
How’s that?

That’s fine, but the Denver game is still not a good example. I’m not suggesting the short preparation helped him, but it certainly didn’t seem to hurt him, so it becomes a non-issue here. The better example is when he got pulled in the Ravens game.

Quinn was mismanaged worse than Couch was. Least couch had a few WR to try to throw too if he wasnt already on the ground. Quinn had No one to throw to at all. I just hope it dont come back and bite us………
"They kept throwing it at me. I don’t know why. They just kept trying, and I just kept knocking it down." - Joe Hayden, Cleveland Browns.
So BQ was more mismanaged than Couch? The last time I checked, BQ played behind an OL that included Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach. The Browns gave Tim Couch a couple of mannequins and some hobos to block for him. Also, Couch’s WR weren’t that much better than what BQ had.
Resident Tim Couch Apologist.
This, especially the point about the OLine. Note also that Couch still played a 100 times better than BQ. Re WR’s, BQ had Braylon who is much better than any of the WRs Couch had and also stretched the field big time for all the receivers.

Couch was thrown to the wind and he got chewed up. BQ didnt even get the benefit of developement and regularly didnt get the 1st team snaps to get any sort of familarity with the WR’s. Both cases show poor development by the coaches. Hopefully now, we have whats needed to bring our current players to there max potential.

I’m no Couch defender. But to say Quinn was handled worse than Couch is pretty out there.
"I wasn’t asked to catch the ball and go out in the flats and run routes, because that wasn’t how our offense was," Lawrence Vickers said. "Now people are lying and people think I can’t catch. I guess I shouldn’t have started knocking people out."
Not really.
I think both suffered as a result of the bad situations they found themselves in. In my opinion, Couch had more ability and talent as a QB — by far. It’s also not about who had the better supporting cast — O-line, WRs, masseuse, or agent.
Unlike Quinn, Couch was never part of a 3-way QB carousel to determine if and when he would be the starter for the team. He was the man from the minute we drafted him #1. Thus, he did not get all the unnecessary BS head-games that RAC used on Quinn for reasons only he still knows.
Quinn, on the other hand, was a late first round pick who got treated like RAC’s stepchild and never really knew where he stood with the team until he was desperately rushed into action in a last ditch effort to save the jobs of those responsible.

He was the man from the minute we drafted him #1.
No he wasn’t. He was supposed to sit. He became the man when the team decided the second game of his career that Detmer wasn’t going to work. He then also had a mini competition with Holcomb. Couch was rushed into a position he was inadequately prepared for and then after gutting through, was in the position of one pass away or ankle twist of being yanked.
Brady Quinn was allowed to sit till almost the end of the season when an injury forced DA out. Not to mention he was responsible for his holdout, which more than likely had an adverse effect on his development as well.
I think it was the right decision to name DA the starter in 2008. When Quinn was named the starter after DA wasn’t cutting it, he played fairly well the next few games but got hurt and was out for the season. Was this the fault of the Browns?
2009 i’ll blame Mangini because he should have gotten rid of both of the clowns in the offseason.

by North Coast Flea on May 24, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m pretty sure that was later. ESPN has Detmer playing in 5 games in 99.
This is from the infallible.
In 1999, Detmer was traded to the Cleveland Browns, who wanted him to mentor rookie Tim Couch. Detmer started the first two games of the 1999 season, then served as backup to Couch for the rest of the season. Detmer injured his right Achilles and was inactive the entire 2000 season.
"I wasn’t asked to catch the ball and go out in the flats and run routes, because that wasn’t how our offense was," Lawrence Vickers said. "Now people are lying and people think I can’t catch. I guess I shouldn’t have started knocking people out."
McCoy was rushed into action without first team snaps too. He showed more (maybe the numbers are debatable) than Quinn ever did. He was in the same predicament as BQ, but is now our clear starter. BQ got benched and then shipped out. That’s a result of play on the field, not some imaginary vendetta or slight by the coaches.
Resident Tim Couch Apologist.
I think the numbers might not support it, but McCoy seemed to do better on the eye test than Brady did.
"I wasn’t asked to catch the ball and go out in the flats and run routes, because that wasn’t how our offense was," Lawrence Vickers said. "Now people are lying and people think I can’t catch. I guess I shouldn’t have started knocking people out."
I will agree on McCoy. Though thats due to his real ability as a QB. The kids been thrown around in weird situations for years and had thrived on it. Lots of people think McCoy’s too small or not strong enough, I say there wrong! The kid has “IT”, and it shows. Tim, brady, and te rest of the QB’s we’ve had since 99 dont have “IT”, and never will. The kid will make us proud again, and I might have to bust out with my old Sipe and Kosar jerseys

I posted this on the ESPN message boards when the decision was made to go from Quinn to Anderson.
“last night on NFL network I heard a stat brought up about the Browns offense that makes this QB switch seem smart. Out of our 36 offensive possesions this season 26 of them have ended in either a 3 and out or a drive with 1 first down…. that means that on 72% of our drives our Defense has had at the most 8 plays to rest…. thats ridiculous.”
That stat still rings true when reading this post. Quinn had no ability to move the offense. Sure he could check down with the best of them. 3rd and 10, throw a 2 yd pass to the TE. Why is he being brought up on the Browns board again?
by Justin Kowalczyk on May 22, 2011 8:33 AM EDT reply actions
Why is he being brought up on the Browns board again? bq.
This is a part of our painful history — like it or not. Sometimes we need to discuss these things for closure. It helps the healing process and allows us to move on to other inane discussions.
I find it interesting to wonder if and how Quinn pans out in Denver. Is it really the end of the line already? He was one of our long line of first round picks who failed miserably here after the Browns resumed operations in 1999. And, in my opinion, his flame-out was only expedited by the confusion in our front office and among our Keystone Kops coaching staff at the time.

It will be ironic, though, if somehow BQ sees significant playing time and makes any kind of positive contribution to the Denver offense. Think of all the Denver fans still scratching their heads on the trade for Hillis. We obviously got the better end of the deal. Denver management is desperately trying to salvage any return they possibly can to make the deal look a little better for their part.
Frankly, I think the most they will ever get from Quinn now is the small possibility of a spark to kindle the fire under Orton and/or Tebow that eventually gets one of them going.
